I had the pleasure of guiding Mr Tomoki “Tom” and Hayato “Hay” from Tokyo for a few days recently. Tom is an experienced angler and expert lure craftsman (wait until you see some of his lures 😳 –see pics in the comments) and Hay is a very skilled Japanese flathead (magochi) specialist. Both were keen to try their hand at landing a big, Aussie dusky flathead on lure…
Japanese flathead (magochi) are mostly caught in water 10-30m, so relatively shallow water “Aussie style” flathead fishing was totally new to them. For the full Aussie dusky flathead luring experience, we covered shallow (.5-3m) and deep-ish (4-10m) flattie techniques with topwater lures, jerkbaits, swimbaits and soft plastics.
We battled some very difficult conditions with 20+ knot winds, cold and dirty water (17 degrees over the high tide) some days... We fished three rivers and, in the end, results were pretty solid! We boated 7 dusky flathead over 70cm (with 5 over 80cm): 70, 78, 80.5, 83.5, 85 and 88cm (x2).
Check out some of their catches!
