Salty shack guests, Jackson, Kalon, and Kalen landed this awesome barrel during their stay last weekend.
The fish went 106kg gilled and gutted! It was caught off a blind hookup behind the rock in 120 meters of water....
Congratulations guys!
I believe these lads now hold the Salty Shack record for the biggest tuna by a guest๐Ÿ’ช. Well done!๐ŸŽฃ๐ŸŽฃ

Plenty of tuna offshore around Portland at the moment..
Mostly in the smaller sizes around 12 to 15kg, but for what they lack in size, they sure are making up for with numbers!.
Start looking for the birds and bait anywhere past the rock and the fish won't be far away.. Fish have been pretty willing to take most of the usual trolling lures, with the diving types such as Rapala xrap 30s, Halco laser pros, and Samaki pacemakers working the best for us..

As always at this time of year, there are also a few barrels out there for those willing to put in the effort, with one weighed in today at 115kg.

Cheers and happy fishing! ๐ŸŽฃ๐ŸŽฃ๐ŸŽฃ๐ŸŽฃ๐ŸŽฃ๐ŸŸ๐ŸŸ๐ŸŸ๐ŸŸ๐ŸŸ๐ŸŸ๐ŸŸ

Gday all.
Apologies as It's been a while since our last post, however It has been a busy period in Portland and Salty Shack, since the covid lockdowns were relaxed. We thank you for your support, and choosing our humble little shack on the beach for your family holidays, fishing trips and getaways๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ™.
It has been fantastic to see so many more people extending their travel past the usual holiday hotspots, like Lorne or Apollo Bay, to come and see all Portland and surrounds have to offer. Portlandโ€™s beautiful coastline and the wide variety of things to see and explore, should not leave you disappointed๐Ÿ–..

๐ŸŽฃOn to the fishing๐ŸŽฃ
The north shore has again fished well for tuna over the last the last month or two. Fish have been spread all the way along to Port fairy around the 30mt line, they have been caught in as little as 10mts of water this year and have been seen regularly within a short distance from Wally's ramp. This opens up the opportunities to get amongst these great sports fish in smaller tinnys, jetskis and even kayak's.
Most boats are getting success for these tuna trolling smaller skirt lures in pink or white. While this is the popular general advice given to us from the local tackle shops, personally I have been far more successful sneaking up to the schools casting small to medium sized stickbaits to draw the strike, every day seems to be different on these things so be prepared to keep changing up lure size and colour until you crack the code๐Ÿ‘..
The kingfish have also fired at times in these areas this year, fish are biting best on first and last light and currently most boats are targeting these kings in the shallow waters around Minerva reef out from the abalone farm. Fishing at anchor with a burley trail with some live baits under a balloon is the popular technique getting results, squid strips are also a "go to" bait to fire up flighty kings into biting.

For the bottom bouncers there have been decent numbers of larger King George Whiting coming in for those putting in the work, the standard pinky snapper are always on offer throughout the Bay, and again those undersize snapper are in plague proportions both in the harbour and around north shore, so be prepared to lose a few baits when out doing this type of fishing.

The fish pictured come from east of Julia Reef on Sunday, they were in around 30mt and both took the halco slidog 105 on the cast...

Feel free to drop us a line during your stay at Salty Shack and we'll guide you to the best of our ability, to hopefully get into a few for yourselves.
Cheers,
And happy fishing๐ŸŽฃ๐ŸŽฃ๐ŸŽฃ๐ŸŽฃ

Always worth a quick cast at the lee breakwall when your in town... Ive found it pays to have a rod pre rigged with a jig in the car for those quick trips to the "shops"๐Ÿ˜‰. The family will thank you for the tasty calamari rings.
This guy was second cast on the 6lb bream combo I had handy on one such trip ๐ŸŽฃ๐Ÿฆ‘๐Ÿ‘Œ

Salty shack fishing report๐Ÿฆˆ๐ŸŸ...

G'day all. First of all we would like to take the time to say thanks for the amazing support of recent times. Salty shack has experienced more visitors than ever in the last 12 months and we appreciate every one of you. It also has to be noted how well our guests are treating, and leaving the shack, it doesn't go unnoticed and that helps us to remain as what we believe to be the most cost effective short term accommodation in the area. Thank you all๐Ÿ™

Anyhow, on to the fishing!
The weather conditions seem to be finally starting to show some improvements, with a few calm days and even a small amount of sunshine ๐ŸŒž over the last few weeks so it's a great time to get out on the water.
The barrel tuna have again been consistent for this time of year with plenty getting caught early in the month. The tuna fishing has slowed a little over the last few weeks, but for the dedicated they are definitely still out there, with any fishable day still consistently seeing a jumbo tuna or two landed.
The Lee Breakwall is seeing the usual extra traffic that the school holidays bring and for good reason, it's such a convenient and easy platform to get the kids out for a fish, there are a few squid on offer, best spots are usually on the shallow end of the wall before the first gate. The pinky snapper are biting at times keeping everyone interested and there are some decent size fish but many are slightly undersize. Fishing the breakwall at night has also reported to be producing a few sharks including 7gill and gummys..
Offshore on Wednesday we fished the area South of Cape Nelson lighthouse, and found plenty of snapper around 35 to 40cm best baits were squid and fresh barracouta fillet. Any amount of these fish on offer out there if you can get through the couta without losing your gear as they really are thick right now. Good sized school shark and gummy shark in that area too, we managed one of each and lost a couple to bite offs, so it pays to use wire trace on your rigs if targeting gummys, as the school shark are just as common at the moment.
Good luck out there, and stay safe๐Ÿ‘
Cheers and happy fishing๐ŸŸ๐Ÿฆˆ๐ŸŸ๐Ÿฆˆ

Nothing but the best for our guests at the Salty Shack!
Whether you've spent the day on the water in freezing conditions and need to defrost in a hurry. Spent time checking out the sites in the heat of summer, or had a big day watching whales, seals, dolphins, Gannetts or any of the other creatures to view along the amazing Portland coastline.
We have you covered with a new Fujitsu split system installed which will have you cooling down, or warming up in no time.๐Ÿฅต๐Ÿฅต๐Ÿฅถ๐Ÿฅถ๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ˜Š

Salty shack fishing report๐ŸŽฃ๐ŸŽฃ
The dust has now settled on what was a busy school holiday period around portland. The hooked on Portland fishing comp was a big success for the town, and seen plenty of boats and land based anglers trying their luck for a prize..
The North shore tuna have been a bit more hit and miss than last year, however the fish are still definitely around, we managed one smaller fish yesterday east of Julia reef casting a nomad 155 riptide stickbait, while the other boat fishing with us had success trolling small jethead skirts. Pink and green/evil colours drawing the strikes..
The bottom fishing in that area was also productive, we had a great micro jigging session with any amount of Pinky's on offer. Also large pike, and a blue morwong (or queen snapper) as some call them.
Our fishing companions also managed a nice gummy in the same area, so the options and variety really are great in that area at this time of year..
Happy fishing to all ๐ŸŸ๐Ÿฆˆ

Saltyshack fishing report๐ŸŸ๐ŸŸ..
Barrels!!
After waiting patiently for the late run of jumbo tuna to arrive, it is finally upon us.
Reports have been coming through thick and fast over the last few days from sources such as, Portland bait and tackle and the charter boat pages.
Going on last year and the year before, we should see these fish about for a few weeks now, the weather report is looking fairly good and no doubt we should see a huge number of boats heading to Portland to try their luck for that fish of a lifetime.
Salty Shack will be available at a moment's notice for when the opportunity arises to get out there.
And when you do, don't be afraid to shamelessly show off your catch on our page.
Cheers and happy fishing ๐ŸŽฃ

Salty shack fishing report ๐ŸŸ๐ŸŸ
Hey all, been a while since the last update on the Portland fishing scene.
Weather has been restricting most boats of late, but for those who are getting out there is still school tuna around the 10kg mark on offer. These tuna have been a little harder to tempt lately, charter boats seem to have had mixed results, fish fired up in the two days leading up to the full moon with most boats managing to bag out early then almost completely shut down the following day. Best areas were around the 60 to 70 mt line straight out from Lawrence rocks and towards Cape Bridgwater.
For the bottom bouncers, reports of quality gummy shark have been coming in from the 120mt line.
We headed out aboard the black pearl on Tuesday finding plenty of average sized pinky snapper around 35cm and some larger morwong in 60mt straight out from Cape Nelson lighthouse. We also managed some very nice sized calamari squid from around the Lee breakwall.
North shore has been quite over the last few weeks, although with a little patience a few boats have caught some real quality king George Whiting over the 50cm mark, and big calamari have started to show up, so hopefully this will continue to get better over the coming weeks.
Good luck and happy fishing๐ŸŸ๐ŸŸ

Portland fishing report.

School tuna have been showing up in huge numbers in recent weeks, most reports have been from south to south west of Lawrance rocks from around the 60 metre line to the 110 and beyond. Fish have mainly been on the smaller side averaging around 15kgs, however what they have lacked in size they sure have made up for in numbers and are great fun on lighter tackle. A couple of barrels came in last week both topping the 100kg, also plenty of those "one that got away" stories coming up of larger fish hooked and winning their freedom, so the big ones are about and always a chance for the die hards that are willing to put in the work.

Most success for our boat has been with the med sized jethead skirts (7inch) in various colours depending on the mood at the time, but "lumo" and "purple slimey" colours have been stand outs for us recently.

The north shore has been fishing ok around the shallows, with a little patience and a bit of burley, you can easily pick up a good feed of pinky snapper and a few large whiting if you are lucky.

The weather is not looking great for the coming week, but hopefully it will do the right thing for us all and drop off next week.

Also remember if you do catch a few on your stay to drop us a line or send through a pic and we can add it to our report.

Cheers and happy fishing ๐ŸŸ๐ŸŸ

Still plenty of tuna around the north shore from julia reef to lady julia percy island.
We took the opportunity on the long weekend to get these two keen fisherman out aboard blackpearl for their first tuna trip, with 10yo brayden managing to land his first solo tuna, and 8yo lockie having a ball winding in a few of his own (with a little help from dad).
These fish were taken from around 30mt of water out from the wind farm east of julia reef. We have had consistent success from this area for months now and fish are showing no signs of disappearing just yet. Best lures for us have been samaki pacemaker deep 140s in "sauri" and "red head" also some success with small jethead skirts in lumo and pink at times.
Other reports still have catches of whiting and plenty of pinky snapper around the north shore. A few barrels have been landed and or lost over towards port fairy, and reports of school tuna are also starting to show up offshore south of lawrence rock.
Lee breakwall have plenty of small pinky snapper, a few whiting, couta and one report of small king fish over the weekend.
We will now try to get an updated fishing report up on the page regularly, so if you do manage to catch a few on your stay at Salty Shack, let us know or send through a few pictures and we will be happy to include them in our report.
Cheers and happy fishing!
