Experimented this morning when photographing an Aurora over Hobart - normally you head to a dark location away from city lights - this time I embraced the lights and stayed in the city as I was confident the Aurora was big enough to shine through - and it did! This photo was taken facing west due to cloud cover south - normally you look south however this Aurora was large enough across the horizon that the cloud didn't matter.

And never thought I'd ever see the corona above our heads in Hobart. On the way home just out of the CBD we pulled over when the aurora went off and jumped out of the car to look STRAIGHT UP. And this is what we saw!

OMG. This is what you pay $10,000 to do tours in the Northern Hemisphere to see!

Excuse some of the lens flare as we were under street lights - and it still looked like this!

Aurora alert for this weekend!

Over the last 24-48 hours we have seen 4-5 X class CME flares (highest level) launch off the sun straight at little old Earth. Normally we might see 1-2 of these events a year and we just had possibly 5 within 24 hours! This has the potential to trigger one of the best Auroras in the last decade if it pans out, so be prepared to get out under the stars away from light pollution if you want to see one. The prediction is around for it to hit tomorrow night.

Standard disclaimer - absolutely nothing could also happen and the forecasts are wrong - and this does happen!!!

Woke up randomly at 5:00am to be greeted by lights over Hobart. To close to sunrise to go anywhere however managed a few from our backyard and dining room. Apologies to the family who were accidentally woken by the elephant trying to find the camera!
