Our history picture this week is of Tommy Hales, a champion jockey who lived from 1847 to 1901.

"Born in Portland, Victoria, at the age of 12 he ran away from home to become a jockey, and what a jockey he became. Tommy found refuge at Edward Stockdale’s Station Lake Hawdon, Robe South Australia. At only 13 years of age he won his first race at Robe South Australia in a match race worth 50 pounds, on a horse named Euclid. Tommy Hales was so excited he slept in his boots and breeches that night.
Tom Hales had a phenomenal career winning most Australian major races including the 1880 Melbourne Cup on unbeaten horse named Grand Flaneur. During the 1888 autumn carnival he had 14 mounts for 11 winners in four days.

Tom Hales retired in 1894 and passed away in 1901. Hales also won three Sydney cups, six AJC Derbies, seven VRC Derbies, ten VRC St Legers, six AJC St Legers, seven Australian Cups, seven VRC Champion Stakes, five AJC Champion Stakes and two Newmarkets."

This information was collated by past local historian Gus Ferguson, an avid and passionate Robe consultant of history.

Now it’s SA Life famous!

Read all about Marg and Ferg as historical custodians and their restorative love affair with Moorakyne House. It’s simply fabulous and we are very lucky to see this heritage home and it’s gardens so cherished in our lifetime.

Yesterday we learnt so much from local artist Terry Johnson on acrylic techniques in an Art Workshop.

Terry guided us through our chook and wildflower masterpiece and we were so happy with the results. We can highly recommend the experience!
