Founded and managed by local ecologists, Boobook has exclusive access to spectacular landscapes, Indigenous sites and areas of stunning natural biodiversity. With many years experience living and working in the region,

Boobook’s founders Craig and Meryl have a passion for both the natural and human history of this region. They reveal the secrets of remote Australian bushland, local heritage and their firsthand experience of working the land in an outback community. From short tours to longer holidays with glamping accommodation, Boobook Explore welcomes independent travellers and groups who want experiences to inspire, educate and protect the environments they visit. All experiences are within a few hours of Roma in Western Queensland, which is easily reached by air (1.5 hours from Brisbane), train, car or coach.

Love the great outdoors? Passionate about sharing the beauty of the Carnarvon Ranges? We’re looking for a Tour Guide to join our team in Roma, Qld!

This is a seasonal role (April–October) – perfect for someone who enjoys meeting new people and has a love for nature, history, and adventure. Whether you’re an experienced guide or semi-retired and looking for a rewarding way to stay active, we’d love to hear from you!

What You’ll Do:
✅ Lead small group eco-friendly tours in and around Roma and through stunning landscapes in the Carnarvon Ranges
✅ Share your knowledge of local flora, fauna and local history
✅ Enjoy a role where every day is an adventure!

Did you know?

This little guy is commonly known as the Crucifix Frog (Notaden Bennettii), or Holy Cross Frog, due to the unique pattern on its back, closely resembling a crucifix!

These interesting amphibians belong to a family of ground-dwelling frogs called the Limnodynastidae which includes many of Australia’s burrowing frogs.

Crucifix Frog Facts
🐸 Most commonly found in inland parts of NSW and QLD
🐸 They secrete a glue-like substance from their skin when under stress
🐸 Their bold neon green/yellow appearance and red and black spots help to deter predators
🐸 They spend most of their lives underground in a protective cocoon only emerging from their burrows after heavy rain
🐸 Adults reach a size of up to 6.5 cm while tadpoles can be up to 5 cm long

We have seen these frogs in the Roma region, and if you're lucky, you might too!

It's drying off a bit here, but the echidnas are on the move ☺️☺️ 🕔 5 Quick facts about out our prickly echidnas that are estimated to have evolved between 20 and 50 million years ago!! 🦔🦔 #1 Echidnas are egg-laying mammals #2 This species of monotremes (a unique, egg-laying mammal) is one of 3 in the world! #3 There are two types of echidnas #4 They have toothless jaws: yep, that’s right – not one single tooth. Instead, they put their slender snouts and strong claws to work, tearing open logs, ant hills and other food sources, then use their long sticky tongues (we’re talking 15cm long!) and pads on the roof of their mouth to break down their food. They have been recorded to eat roughly 40,000 ants, termites and worms per day! #5 They are named after a creature from Greek mythology who was renowned as the “Mother of Monsters”, believed to be a half woman, half snake. Why, you ask? BOOBOOK specialises in flora and fauna surveys, rare and threatened species searches, habitat assessments and provides fauna spotter / catcher services. Our specialised personnel are skilled and experienced in ecology, species identification, trapping and handling of native wildlife, environmental management and strategic planning.

Our qualified and very experienced ecologists are also guides on our day and extended ecotours. Travel the Queensland outback with us and access a number of scenic and environmentally diverse areas located on private property extending from the Great Dividing Range to Carnarvon Gorge.
