Yesterday we celebrated our end of year Christmas party 🎅🏼

What was supposed to be a week or two of personal leave to find some clarity turned into a month and feeling more confused than ever. I’m recently unemployed, my kids are that little bit older that I have several free days a week, so I finally have the time I’ve been wanting for so long. But suddenly this time feels overwhelming - as intimidating as a blank canvas. The last time I had the opportunity to focus primarily on art was 8 years ago, and it lasted even less than a month before I fell pregnant with our first child and my partner was made redundant from his job in the same week. This quickly had me abandoning my plan of creating a living from my art and launched me into serious life and Mum mode. So here I am, fortunate enough to have the opportunity once again, but this time as a mother with three little yet huge responsibilities. The problem with being a creative is income is never certain, and you’re often made to feel like you’re chasing a dream that’s set to fail. I’m trying to surrender to the feeling of the unknown and uncertain, but truth is it’s difficult. I’m a planner, I like to have goals and directions. And anyone who is a parent knows about the guilt that can set in when you’re choosing a path of uncertainty rather than stability.
Whilst trying to sort my thoughts and feelings I was reminded of two things…
1. Art is cheaper than therapy
2. Thinking is not doing.

This was the kick I needed to get my act together and at least make a start. I’m now spending majority of my free time in my home studio, creating whatever I can to help process the endless thoughts and doubts in my brain. I still have some big decisions to make but at least now I feel I’m actively working towards somehow figuring it all out.

Anyway, here’s an image of an artwork I’ve been playing with. Just a bit of a fun piece to get back into a creative flow. Acrylic paint, soft pastel and oil paint.

To my valued followers, I wanted to let you all know that I will be taking a week or two of personal leave.

Through reflection after a significant loss and change in personal circumstances, I’m getting strong messages that it’s time to finally put my art as a major focus. But I need some time and space to figure out what exactly that looks like.

I absolutely love hosting these paint sessions, rest assured they aren’t going anywhere. But there will be a shift in how and where I operate them, with accessibility and diversity being a huge focus.

So please be patient with me during this vulnerable time. I endeavour to get back to you as soon as I can. Hopefully surfacing with fresh ideas, a sharp focus and a clear path on the other side. Perhaps even some new artworks.

Lastly I’d like to extend my condolences to anyone who has watched or is watching a loved one suffer from Alzheimers. A cruel disease which nobody should have to suffer from.
