Turtles are on the move on Agnes beaches, with hatchlings emerging and mummas still nesting π’ . We have 3m high tides nest week coinciding with the swell from the TC up north. This places some nests at risk of tidal inundation and sand bank erosion. Please report displaced nests/ eggs to 0427 358 201.
All our local beaches are patrolled daily to record turtle nesting activity, but we cannot be everywhere all the time π π£
If you see nesting turtles, hatchlings or eggs, please contact:
- 0427 358 201 for Chinamens to 1770
- 0416 257 754 for Springs to Red Rock
The data we collect is shared with Qld Turtle Conservation Program. π
If you are lucky enough to see a nesting turtle, please keep at least 10m distance, stay still and keep torches and flashes off. Do not handle hatchlings as they need to run down the beach to build their fitness and geomagnetic imprint to return to the area.
Agnes is not a high-density nesting area so if you want a sea turtle experience head to Mon Repos near Bundaberg where you will see turtles and not inadvertently negatively impact local nesting.ππΌ
