And just like that… our Vikings June Odyssey comes to a close.

From windswept coastlines to mountain switchbacks, ancient stave churches to modern saunas, we’ve pedalled through the heart of Viking country and its epic landscapes.

There were fjords, forests, and plenty of post-ride feasts. Legs were tested, friendships formed, and the stories we collected will echo long after the final kilometre.

To our incredible crew of riders: thank you for your spirit, laughter, and strength. You rode like warriors.

And to our guides who went above and beyond, as always.

Until the next odyssey…

Welcome to Åndalsnes – the mountain capital

Tucked at the mouth of the Rauma River where it meets Romsdalsfjorden, this little town is wrapped in jaw-dropping razor-sharp peaks that soar up to 1800 metres. It’s the kind of place where the mountains are mysterious, majestic and occasionally moody.

Only 3 days left of this incredible Vikings odyssey.

• Climb and descend.
• Effort and reward.
• Isolation and arrival.

You push through silence and solitude in the highlands, then emerge to sweeping grandeur and the bustle of Geiranger’s tiny village below. It’s a day that echoes the heart of cycle touring; it’s grit and grace, sweat and awe, all in one unforgettable stretch of road.

Vikings Odyssey - Rest Day in Skjolden

An amazing place to rest and enjoy some of the finest fjord views in Norway, the Skjolden hotel is perfectly placed at the very end of the world’s longest fjord - Sognefjorden.

Surrounded by waterfalls, steep mountains and dramatic landscape, this is a town you will remember. Skjolden has more to offer than meets the eye. The Skjolden Hotel has it´s very own brewery in its basement and offers gourmet dinners which are second to none.

We reached our first fjord, Norway’s mighty Lysefjord, after a morning of sweeping mountain plateau views. At Kjerag, we paused for coffee and soaked in the dramatic drop down to the fjord below, a moment of stillness before the thrill ahead.

Then it was time: the legendary 29-switchback descent into Lysebotn. One of these switchbacks disappears into the mountain, a tunnel bored 100 metres through rock before emerging back into the light, with the road spilling down to Lysevegen.

Unforgettable landscapes, fearless riding, and the shared joy of the road - this is what Bike Odyssey is all about.

The historic and awe-inspiring Telemark Canal truly lived up to its reputation. Once hailed as “the eighth wonder of the world” when it was built over 130 years ago, it left a lasting impression on us. We admired the lush green landscape mirrored in the still canal waters and felt the rumble as the locks lifted our boat, preparing us to glide out across the vast Norsjø lake.

We began our journey here, drawn by both its rich history and the excellent road quality—an ideal route that allowed us to bypass the busy roads and tunnels that would have otherwise been unavoidable by bike.

Disembarking at Ulefoss Lock, we mounted our bikes and set off. The path along the south side of the canal offered gentle, picturesque riding. But once we crossed the water, the landscape transformed—dramatic vistas unfolded before us, with the terrain rising and the mountains looming magnificently on the horizon. It was an unforgettable start to the adventure.

Our Story

Bike Odyssey is a boutique tour operator specializing in epic cycling adventures. We run five to seven itineraries a year in locations across the world. All tours are expertly guided and based on historical journeys or figures. Bike Odyssey was conceived in 2009 by archaeologist, historian, and television personality Sam Wood, who designs all the routes and has led tours around the world for the last decade. Sam worked for the British Museum as well as directed archaeological excavations around the world from the ruins of Pompeii, to uncovering tombs in Cyprus, to mapping the lost ships of the Bermuda Triangle. However, he is best known for presenting the popular BBC documentary series “On Hannibal’s Trail.” Combining both academia and adventure, he is a real live Indiana Jones! The tours reflect Sam’s love of history and a passion for seeing the world by bike. He believes there is no better way to experience a country and built the company to share his passion with guests.

Our Tours: Historical, Tech-Forward, Luxurious, Exceptional

Unlike other cycling tour operators, which offer a smorgasbord of tours often subcontracted to other operators, we put full focus on five to seven tours a year, resulting in well-researched and perfectly executed journeys. Features you can expect on every tour:
