Today was an unforgettable adventure of bike and boat travel, featuring two ferry crossings and two cycling sections as we traversed the Andes from Chile to Argentina. The scenery was breathtaking, winding through a maze of pristine waterways.

The day began with a challenging climb to the Chilean border, a true test of endurance. At the majestic checkpoint perched on the Andes, we found ourselves gazing at La Poderosa, Che Guevara’s iconic 600cc motorbike, while waiting to get our passports stamped.

After a thrilling descent, we crossed into Argentina and boarded a catamaran to sail across the emerald waters of Lago Frías. From Puerto Alegre, a short 3-kilometer flat ride brought us to Puerto Blest, where another catamaran awaited to ferry us across the stunning Lake Nahuel Huapi to Puerto Pañuelo.

The landscapes and atmosphere were extraordinary, offering a rare and awe-inspiring experience for cyclists. As taxing as the day was, the spellbinding views and the bone-rattling terrain made every moment worth it. We capped off this epic journey at the magnificent Llao Llao Lodge—a perfect end to a spectacular day!

Today, we completed a unique crossing from Chile to Argentina, considered one of the great bike journeys anywhere in the world. We sailed through the Andes Mountains across three stunning lakes connected by two overland legs, traveling from Petrohue in Chile to San Carlos de Bariloche in Argentina. It was truly a tour finale to remember!

This morning, we took time to explore Petrohue. After a quick coffee, we boarded the ferry for our first leg across Lago Todos los Santos. Our destination was Peulla, a tiny, remote village where we are now spending the night. There wasn’t any cycling today, but tomorrow promises some epic challenges, so we’re making sure to rest up and be ready!

It was a classic morning ride as we headed east along the scenic shores of Lago Llanquihue. Our destination was Petrohué, with the majestic Andes as our backdrop. Along the way, we cycled directly toward the towering trio of volcanoes that loomed above the lake, including the infamous one that erupted in 2015, grounding flights to Chile for over two weeks.

The route followed a picturesque stretch of shoreline, winding through secluded beaches and pastoral farmland. But it wasn’t all smooth sailing. This afternoon offered a real challenge: the chance to tackle Volcán Osorno. The climb rose an impressive 1,100 meters and was no small feat, but the rewards for our riders were spectacular. Stunning views and the thrill of saying they’d cycled up an active volcano—who can say they’ve done that before?

Why ‘Che’?

Che Guevara has become a legendary political figure. Often equated heroically with rebellion, revolution, and socialism, many also remember that he was ruthless; he ordered executions without trial in Cuba. However, Guevara’s image remains a prevalent icon of leftist radicalism and anti-imperialism.

Che Guevara was born Ernesto de la Serna on 14 June 1928 in Rosario, Argentina. As a student he travelled widely and his worldview was changed by a nine-month journey he began in December 1951, with his friend Alberto Granado. That trip took them from Argentina through Chile, Peru, Colombia, and on to Venezuela, from which Guevara travelled alone on to Miami, returning to Argentina by plane (we only ride the Chile Section!). During the trip, Guevara kept a journal that was posthumously published under his family’s guidance as The Motorcycle Diaries: Notes on a Latin American Journey (2003) and adapted to film as The Motorcycle Diaries (2004).

‘Che’ is a form of colloquial slang commonly used in Argentina and Uruguay in a vocative sense as “friend” and thus loosely corresponds to expressions like “mate,” “pal,” “man,” “bro,” or “dude.”

Pichilemu, meaning “small forest” in Mapudungun, has a rich history blending indigenous, colonial, and modern influences. Originally inhabited by the Promaucaes, a Mapuche subgroup, it later became a minor point of interest during Spanish colonization. Officially founded in 1872, it gained prominence in the late 19th century when politician Agustín Ross Edwards transformed it into a luxury retreat, building landmarks like the Agustín Ross Casino and Park. Over time, Pichilemu evolved into a popular coastal destination, renowned for its unique black sand beaches and vibrant surfing scene. Today, it is celebrated as a world-class surf spot, particularly at Punta de Lobos, and for its cultural and environmental significance.

Our Story

Bike Odyssey is a boutique tour operator specializing in epic cycling adventures. We run five to seven itineraries a year in locations across the world. All tours are expertly guided and based on historical journeys or figures. Bike Odyssey was conceived in 2009 by archaeologist, historian, and television personality Sam Wood, who designs all the routes and has led tours around the world for the last decade. Sam worked for the British Museum as well as directed archaeological excavations around the world from the ruins of Pompeii, to uncovering tombs in Cyprus, to mapping the lost ships of the Bermuda Triangle. However, he is best known for presenting the popular BBC documentary series “On Hannibal’s Trail.” Combining both academia and adventure, he is a real live Indiana Jones! The tours reflect Sam’s love of history and a passion for seeing the world by bike. He believes there is no better way to experience a country and built the company to share his passion with guests.

Our Tours: Historical, Tech-Forward, Luxurious, Exceptional

Unlike other cycling tour operators, which offer a smorgasbord of tours often subcontracted to other operators, we put full focus on five to seven tours a year, resulting in well-researched and perfectly executed journeys. Features you can expect on every tour:
