Insync Network Group

Insync Network Group The InSync Network Group helps Australians navigate their career & the job market as they return home from a life overseas.

The Insync Community is a diverse group of professionals and their partners who have lived and worked abroad in all corners of the world. Our members come from various backgrounds, each with their own unique story to tell. We are a mix of individuals who are embarking on the journey ‘home’ either independently or as part of an organisation. Some are local to the city they are returning to, others

are not. Some are leveraging their known career path whilst others are changing or re-establishing it. Some are relocating families, others are embarking upon this journey alone. It is this melting pot of experience and backgrounds that makes Insync Network Group unique. With the aim of helping returning expats to 'get back in sync' as soon as possible we support both individuals and organisations who manage the global relocation of their employees. 🤔 Thinking about heading back to the land of Vegemite, avocado toast, and $30 parmies? You're not alone—but 82% of expats tell us they're worried about the move home, and guess what? Career is the #1 concern. And right behind that is affordability.

With the rising cost of all things Aussie (even your favorite pub meal!), shortening the gap between returning and landing a job has never been more critical. Unfortunately, the job hunt is taking longer for many expats—making career planning and networking more important than ever.

🌏 Here’s how to make the return a little smoother:
✅ Start working on your career strategy NOW.
✅ Build a strong local network to open doors and gain insights.
✅ Tap into communities (like ours!) for support.

🌏 Is Australia Missing Out on Global Talent?

Even with skills shortages and record job vacancies, returning expats are still struggling to break into the Australian job market. Why?

💼 76% of expats said Australian recruiters or hirers never approached them
📞 While 45% reached out to employers from overseas (up from 33% in 2022), nearly 70% had negative experiences with many being told "Wait until you get home" 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️
🎓 The biggest complaint? A lack of recognition for international experience and skills.

Is this you? We'd love to hear how you are navigating this challenge and what you have found helpful in overcoming.

🌏✨ Feeling connected makes all the difference when you’re preparing for a major transition.

We’re so grateful for the words from one of our incredible InSync Community members in Singapore who, after decades of living overseas, is navigating the journey back to Australia. The comfort she has found in connecting with fellow Aussies on the same path has been invaluable — it’s not just about shared stories, but about shared strength and support.

Attending our workshop in Singapore and joining our strategy sessions has given her the tools to approach this transition with confidence and clarity. And, most importantly, it’s the community that reminds us we’re not alone. And best of all...this community is there for you to tap into before you get on the plane!

To all those embracing the journey ‘home,’ know that your community is here, and we’re with you every step of the way.

🌏 Time To Plan Your Next Steps!

Our Australian Expat Careers Report 2024 shows that returning to Australia is taking longer than expected for many expats. In 2022, 50% found a job within 3 months; this year, only 42% did, with many others taking 12 months or even longer.

With rising living costs and housing challenges, having a solid career transition plan is more important than ever. Building your network BEFORE returning can make a huge difference!

For those in transition, you don’t have to navigate this alone. The InSync Network Group offers network insights, free webinars, and a bundle of resources to support your journey home. Get connected and set yourself up for success!

🌏 The Global Australian Connection: Expats Planning Their Return 🌏

With nearly 1 million Australians living abroad, we have a unique advantage on the horizon. According to our latest research, 50% of Australians overseas plan to return home within the next five years. Imagine the potential of a skilled, globally experienced workforce reintegrating into the Australian economy, bringing fresh perspectives and expertise honed on the international stage.

Many expats take one to two years to prepare for their return, and these aren’t spontaneous moves—they’re carefully considered plans. Australians want to come home, contribute meaningfully, and establish themselves for the long term. Yet, they’re seeking reassurance: confidence in the job market and from recruiters and employers who don't discount their international experience.

This is a pivotal time for businesses and industries in Australia to recognise the wealth of talent preparing to re-enter the market. Opportunity is knocking—are we ready to answer?

⚡️Industry Insights: Great news for all electricians, engineers, and construction managers who are looking to return, with nearly all key roles in short supply, according to the latest Australia’s Skills Priority List. The electricity and power sector is one that is bucking any downward trend.

Investment in renewables is creating opportunities that extend beyond electricity generation. Infrastructure projects essential for supporting this energy transition will require a substantial workforce, especially in regional areas, where about 80% of these projects will be located.

This growth is more than just an energy shift; it's an incredible workforce transformation. 🌱🔋

For many expat-repats the end of the calendar year marks the time of returning home.

We know from our conversations that people are at varying stages of their planning, with some sharing that they've been planning all year whilst others plan to enjoy a summer break and have a beach holiday before they start thinking about it.

Getting the balance of managing a career and the logistics (and emotions) of coming home is a tricky one. But with more and more Australians wanting job certainty before they get on the plane, we thought a checklist of where we think the sweet spot is for an October and December arrival.

Returning 'home' after a life overseas is rarely a quick decision. In fact, our latest research shows that 56% of Australian expats spend 1-2 years planning their career transition. While family and lifestyle often drive the decision to return, preparing for the professional shift takes time and strategy.

The Australian expats we recently met with in mirrored our research findings. They shared that investing this time is essential—rushing the process could lead to costly consequences across career, financial, and family spheres.

✨ When breakfast is more than breakfast!

Our InSync Network Group breakfast in Sydney wasn’t just about good food—it was about making meaningful connections with others who know what it’s like to return to a once-familiar place. Beyond the shared experiences, doors were opened to the employment market - which all too often feels like a shut up shop!

Around this table, insights were generously exchanged, introductions offered, along with the promise of a glass of wine when needed. It was also a great reminder that you’re not alone in navigating the journey back to a once-familiar place. 🍷.

If you’re looking to be part of a dynamic, supportive, and action-oriented network, don’t miss our next event! Sign up for our newsletter or visit our website to stay in the loop. Link in bio.

Look out Singapore, InSync is going on the road! We are delighted to announce that we will be in Singapore the week of October 21st to launch the results of our recent Australian Expat Career Survey. Singapore is and has been home to a large chunk of our network so we can't wait to chat with expat-repats…BEFORE they come home.

During our week we will be hosting an event to launch the results, drinks for impending expat-repats and a workshop or two. .r.andersen will also be opening up her diary for anyone interested in meeting for an in-person strategy session. We are confirming our schedule now and would love to hear from those of you keen to join us for a drink or connect whilst we are in town 21-25th October.

‘I was pretty proactive because I knew it was going to be pretty difficult’ is how our latest podcast guest describes his approach to the job market.

Adam Ford was coming home to Australia with a North American finance career but what he really wanted was a role in the for-purpose sector. To achieve this, he knew he had to convince a parochial hiring market NOT to put him in the finance box.

Fast forward a few short years and Adam has successfully swapped boxes.

He is living proof that you can ‘box swap’, but as our conversation demonstrates, you need to get creative, make some strategic steps that might look like sideways before they look upwards, and leave your ego at the door.

Our recent Melbourne breakfast event once again showcased all that is great about the expat-repat community: curiosity, generosity and genuine appreciation and connection. And of course all shared over great coffee!

The discussions held were as rich and diverse as the experiences of those around the table. It was a privilege to see how the threads of shared experience, a collective desire to support each other do meaningful work, and the generosity of sharing networks and opportunities bound us all together.

Our Invite Breakfast series is a curated quarterly event designed to promote meaningful connection, share market insights and expand local networks. If you are interested in knowing more please get in touch!

This is one of the questions we ask Australian expats who have come home in our Australian Expat Career Survey 2024.

In 2022 when we asked this question, 54% said they got a job within 3 months. This year we have added a new follow up question for those who have got a job and this is “Does your new job progress your career?”

Earlier this month we held a fabulous InSync breakfast in Sydney with a diverse group of expat-repats who brought experiences from all corners of the globe, sectors and business functions.

Some people had returned mere months ago, others years ago; some working in corporate, others are on the job hunt; some are in the startup world, while others are building out their own businesses and portfolio careers.

Over breakfast, our expat-repats delved into conversations from ESG and reputation management to the investment landscape and governance and how advisory boards were proving to be a great fit for those with international experience. All of this in the generous spirit that is at the heart of so many expat communities. We look forward to seeing the new connections flourish as 'little black books of connections' were opened.

Our Invite Breakfast series is a curated quarterly event designed to promote meaningful connection, share market insights and expand local networks. If you are interested in knowing more about this series please get in touch for more details.
