55-63 Church Street, Shirley. 1961
Church Street dates from the 1830s, (it is shown on the 1840 Millbrook Tithe map), although most of the houses were built in the 1850s and 1860s. It takes its name from St James' Church, built in 1836 and situated at the north end of the street. These buildings were situated on the east side of the street south of the corner with Milner Street, (seen on the left of the photograph). They were demolished in the 1960s. No. 63, on the corner of Milner Street, was the Bargain Supplies drapery.

1-3 Milner Street, Shirley 1961

Milner Street, which dates from the mid 19th century, formerly ran from Church Street to Howard's Grove, close to where Shirley Towers now stands. It was originally called Chapel Street after the Wesleyan Chapel in nearby Church Street. It was renamed Milner Street in 1901, after Alfred Milner, who was then the High Commissioner of South Africa. These houses stood on the south side of the street. They were probably built in the 1860s and demolished in the 1960s.
