Bellevue Street 1963

Bellevue Street formerly ran from Dorset Street to St Mary's Road. These houses, on the south side of the street, were probably built in the 1820s and demolished in the 1960s. This area dates back to the 1820s. The 1829 Town Guide mentions newly-erected cottages in Charlotte Place. In 1850 Brannon called it "an assemblage of Humble dwellings at the back of Compton Walk."

Poor Clare Convent, 13 Hill Lane: West Elevation 21/5/1949
The Poor Clare Convent in Hill Lane was founded in 1904 by nuns from Le Puy in France. An existing 18th-century house was converted and a chapel added. The convent buildings were bombed in 1940, the chapel, receiving a direct hit, being destroyed. The nuns moved out, eventually to found a new convent in Shirley Warren. The convent house survived the Blitz and was later converted into offices. It is now (1998) the site of Queens Court Flats.

Shirley Methodist Chapel 1910

Built in 1843, this was the first Methodist chapel built in Shirley. It was situated on the west side of Church Street opposite Milner Street. By 1920 the church was too small for the congregation and a new Methodist church was built in St. James Road. This church was then taken over by the Salvation Army, who used it as their meeting hall until 1969 when it was demolished. Flats now stand on the site.
