Clarence Street appears on the 1845/6 Town Map but few houses had been built by then. Most of the houses were built in the late 1840s and the 1850s. These houses were situated on the north side of the street near its western end. They were demolished in the 1950s, and Clarence Street, which formerly ran parallel to York Street, disappeared at the same time. Blocks of flats now occupy the site. 1956

1-6 Cross Street And 21 Johnson Street, Kingsland. 1935

There were 3 Cross Streets in Victorian Southampton. This one ran from North Front to Johnson Street, in the Kingsland area of the town. It dates back to at least 1820. The houses were demolished in the 1930s. Broad Green now occupies some of the site. 21 Johnson Street was Kirby's tobacconist shop.

Belgrave Road dates back to the late 19th century. It is marked out on the 1883 map, but no houses are shown. Most of the houses were built in the 1890s. These houses were situated on the west side of the street near the junction with Kent Road. They were demolished in c1970s.

Compton Walk dates back to the 1830s. The buildings on the north side were built first, those on the south side were built later, probably in the 1860s. These buildings were situated on the north side of the street.

The buildings in Compton Walk were demolished in the late 1960s when the Charlotte Place area was redeveloped. A truncated Compton Walk still exists to the east of the present day Charlotte Place.

Belgrave Road dates back to the late 19th century. It is marked out on the 1883 map, but no houses are shown. Most of the houses were built in the 1890s. These houses were situated at the north end of the east side of the street. They were demolished c1970s. Warehouses now occupy the site.

Jonas Nichols Monument.
The Jonas Nichols Fountain was presented to the town by Jonas Nichols in 1882 to commemorate his son attaining his majority. Nichols was a successful furniture maker and builder. He is remembered in the name Nicholstown, an area of working class houses which he developed, and in Nichols Road. The fountain was originally sited at Six Dials, but was moved to Kingsland Square in 1904. It was moved to Bevois Street in the 1960s. In 1990 this part of Bevois Street was renamed Jonas Nichols Square. Kingsland Market, before the roof was removed, can be seen at the rear.

Bell Street formerly ran between Canal Walk and Orchard Lane. This view looks east towards Canal Walk. In the distance the Lord Roberts pub at 73 Canal Walk can be seen . This pub dates back to the 1850s and was originally called the United Flags. It was renamed in 1900 after the famous soldier, Lord Roberts. In 1986 its name was changed to The Strand . Bell Street dates back to at least 1813. The houses were demolished in the 1930s and blocks of flats were subsequently built on the site.

This house stood on the west corner of Granville Street and Standford Street. The photograph was taken from Standford Street and also shows 18-19 Standford Street ( on the left).

The buildings date back to the 1840s.They were either demolished in the war or just after. Industrial premises now occupy the site.

Compton Walk, Charlotte Place 1961

Compton Walk dates back to the 1830s. The buildings on the north side were built first, those on the south side were built later, probably in the 1860s.

1. 1-3. These buildings were situated on the north side of the street at its western end. No. 2 was occupied by the Gospel Witness Fellowship booksellers; no.3 was the East Park grocery stores. The buildings were built in the 1830s and demolished in the 1960s.

2. 4-6 These buildings were situated on the north side of the street. The terrace of houses with the iron balconies was known as Victoria Terrace in the mid 19th century.

The buildings were built in the 1830s and demolished in the 1960s.

Now demolished, these houses were situated on the east side of Portswood Road near the junction with Belgrave Road. On the O.S. maps they are shown as 1-6 Brook (or Brooke) Terrace. No. 468 was a confectioners run by a Miss Anne Bailey.

Mount Pleasant School. Foundation Stone Ceremony 1896

"Laying of the foundation stone of the Mount Pleasant Board School by the Very Rev. Canon Scannell, Chairman of the Southampton School Board on 26 October 1896. The school, and its prominent clock tower, came into use in 1898. It is a large single-storey building, comprising boys, girls and infants departments. The architect was John H. Blizard and the builders H. Stevens & Co. The school later became Mount Pleasant Middle School."

Albert Road was constructed in 1837 by the Itchen Bridge Company to link the Chapel area and the floating bridge. It was originally called Floating Bridge Road. These houses, situated just south of Elm Terrace, were built after 1842. They were demolished in the 1960s.
