Exactly this!
We are still struggling. As a horse owner, the little tinges of green are so very dangerous.
We’re a long way from being able to breathe a sigh of relief
This is drought.
And so is this.
We had someone visit our little hospitality business recently, fresh from the city, admiring how “green everything looks” - declaring, “Great news, the drought must be over!”
At first, I sighed. Maybe even felt a little fired up. Because while those hills might look green, the reality beyond the surface is far more complex. But I reminded myself: people can only react to what they see. And what they’re seeing doesn’t match what farmers are feeling and the reality.
If you look a little closer - past that fresh flush of green - you’ll see trucks still rolling in full of hay, livestock still hand-fed daily, and producers still stretched thin and worn down. Just a little further north? It’s still dry. Still dusty. Still “drought”
This post isn’t to shame the comment - it’s to highlight just how easy it is to forget the struggle when the paddocks don’t match the textbook image of drought.
So here’s the reminder:
Green doesn’t always mean growth.
A tinge of pasture doesn’t feed stock.
And a few decent days of rain doesn’t fix times of hurt.
To our city mates: don’t switch off just because the hills look pretty. Drought is still here. Still biting. Still costing.
And to those of us in ag: keep using your voice. Keep sharing the reality. Because farmers don’t need pity - they just need people to care.
