Completed Project – Westconnex M4-M5 SPI Ventilation Shaft

After the interest in our benching project summary, we thought we would detail another of our past projects.

Lendlease Samsung Bouygues Construction Australia Joint Venture (LSBJV) awarded the St.Peters Interchange MDS-10 Ventilation Shaft construction (SPI Vent shafts) to SU Tunnel and Civil Services and works began in July 2020.

The project involved the construction of two ventilation shafts in a short timeframe. Excavation of 1,585BCM was in hard shale material and the use of innovate plant solutions assisted in the successful delivery of the project. During excavation, 577 rockbolts and 120m3 of shotcrete was used. These plant innovations provided many advantages including safety benefits, reduced man hours on-site, reduction in program duration and greater certainty of cost with SU providing an entire solution and no requirement for contractor interactions.

Located within tunnel cross-passages, shaft access was difficult. The dimensions of the tunnels were 10-13m (L) x 6.5m (W) x 10m (D) which required small equipment be used, small enough to be lifted in/out of the shafts by mobile cranes.

As the excavation got deeper, the ground got harder. With only small excavator use possible to access the shaft, larger machines were required to remove the hard rock efficiently. As a result, options were explored including innovative attachments to assist in the excavation. A 3m extension arm was fabricated to allow the large 24t Excavator to hammer deeper with the 1.5t rock hammer. This assisted in expediating the removal of the hard shale rather than the much smaller breaker affixed to the 8t excavator.

Rather than using a crane and muck bin to muck out material in the lower benches (RL -4 to -10m) a 6m dipper arm extension was fitted to the 24t excavator. This allowed mucking out activities to be faster, with only one operator required (rather than a crane crew).

Completed Project - Westconnex – Benching

We thought it was a good opportunity to go back and show a small sample of what we have achieved.

In 2017 SU Tunnel & Civil Services was contracted to provide tunnel bench excavation at Westconnex M4 East across their 1B Stage. Split between Cintra Park and Concord Sites, CPB Samsung John Holland Joint Venture (CSJ) created a scope outlining the excavation of the 2.5m deep bench to be removed on a BCM contract rate.

SU Tunnel & Civil Services made use of its tunnel fleet of Komatsu Australia PC138, PC228, PC270 & PC350 Excavators, a Kobelco SK480 and Bell B30D Articulated Dumpers. The project involved using diamond saws against the tunnel walls and hammering out of the bulk using a mix of Atlas Copco hydraulic hammers and our XCENTRIC ATTACHMENTS rippers. Detailed work was completed with Erkat twin headers on the smaller excavators.

The contract was signed in a week and work started onsite a week after, just after Christmas. Project planning was turned around to enable start times to be adhered to as there was a need to mobilise quickly, and SU Tunnel & Civil Services was able to draw on their fleet and experienced operators to turn this around quickly and on time. The pleased client then engaged our road profiling services to profile the tunnel floor with our underground guidance system over the 4 project tunnel sites.

In addition to our fleet, we have recently acquired two brand new TEI Excavator Mounted Drills from Quarry Mining and Construction Equipment PTY LTD , these add to our capabilities. We have completed contract jobs on major projects such as Westconnex and are currently completing the works at the Snowy Hydro Limited 2.0 project.

Our fleet are also available for hire and have been hired on major projects in the last year such as the Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane Metro projects.

SU Tunnel & Civil Services can announce that we are providing contract packages that include our newly delivered Vermeer Australia T1255III Single Side Direct Drive Surface Miner. This big unit chews rock and has the fangs to do it! It is the latest technology in surface mining and it is currently at work in Sydney on a station box job.

SU Tunnel & Civil Services were awarded a works package in 2018 by CPB Contractors Dragados SA Samsung C&T, Engineering & Construction JV, on this major NSW infrastructure project. Part of the greater Westconnex project, it forms part of a tunnelling project that spans 33 kilometres.

As part of the construction of the St Peters Interchange for the new M5 section of WestConnex, there was a requirement to construct shaft VS04 as an inlet/outlet shaft for Ventilation Supply Tunnel and Ventilation Extraction Tunnel.

Construction of vent-shaft (VS04), which dimensions were 32m(L) x 13.5m(W) x 28.5m(D), included installation of 549no rockbolts from between 6-9m, totalling 3970m, installation of strip drains and application of shotcrete (190m3).

Management of tunnel and civil work crews was required throughout the excavation process which involved the excavation and disposal of 12,310BCM of spoil. The excavation included the use of Komatsu Australia excavators and attachments including Epiroc Rock Breakers and XCENTRIC ATTACHMENTS Rippers.

Excavation was joined to the existing tunnel network via portals at the base of the shaft and spoil removal was utilised via the tunnels for the final completion.

Rockbolts were installed using our fully integrated Atlas Copco T20 drill rig and excavator mounted drill attachments.

🎖 PROJECT AWARD 🎖

SU Tunnel and Civil Services are proud to announce that we were awarded the Tantangara Gate Shaft at Snowy Hydro Limited and are beginning excavation in July.

Our crews and equipment have arrived at site (amongst the snow!) and works will be conducted around the clock and include full project management and supervision. With successfully completed projects highlighting our expertise on complex shaft excavation’s over the past decades, we look forward to displaying our capabilities once again.

An elliptical shaft with a diameter of 20m at its widest, this shaft is downstream of the major Tantangara Intake and is part of the system that control water flow and ventilation into the main Headrace Tunnel. At just over 50m deep, the tunnel will be excavated top down and ground support in the form of rockbolts and shotcrete will be incorporated.

We look forward to continuing to work with Future Generation Joint Venture - FGJV on this iconic project and being a part of this once in a generation renewable project.
