🎒 Hostel Hack #6: Master Hostel Etiquette
Sharing a space with fellow travellers can be an amazing experience—if everyone follows a few unwritten rules! Here’s how to be a great hostel guest:
✨ Respect quiet hours. Many hostels have set times for quiet, especially at night. Keep noise to a minimum so everyone can rest.
✨ Keep common areas clean. Wash your dishes, wipe down surfaces, and leave shared spaces as you found them.
✨ Be mindful in dorms. Use a flashlight or your phone light if you’re arriving late or leaving early. Avoid rustling plastic bags!
✨ Use the bathrooms at the right times. Avoid peak times like early mornings or late evenings when everyone’s rushing. Midday is usually quieter.
✨ Wear thongs (flip-flops) in the bathroom. It’s a simple way to stay hygienic in shared spaces.
✨ Label your food. Clearly mark your name and departure date on your items in the fridge to avoid confusion (or accidental snacking!).
✨ Don’t hog the bathroom. Be quick with showers and considerate of others waiting their turn.
✨ Ask before borrowing. Need to borrow a charger or utensil? Always ask first—it’s just polite.
✨ Be friendly but respectful. Hostels are great for meeting people, but respect personal boundaries if someone wants their space.
✨ Follow hostel rules. Each hostel has its own guidelines—whether it’s about alcohol, visitor policies, or kitchen use. Make sure you know and follow them!
✨ Help create a positive vibe. A smile, a “hello,” or a kind gesture can go a long way in creating a welcoming atmosphere.
