Lamine Sonko + Pirritu: one night only at Altona Theatre

Composer, director and multi-instrumentalist Lamine Sonko and Ngiyampaa singer-songwriter Pirritu join forces for an intimate double-bill performance that traverses embodied knowledge, tradition and contemporary culture.

Lamine Sonko (The Public Opinion Afro Orchestra, The African Intelligence) creates multi-artform experiences inspired by his background as a guewel (cultural role) of the Sing Sing clan and Korings of Kaabu, and a member of Senegal’s Serer, Wolof and Mandinko communities.

Pirritu (meaning ‘Brett’ in Ngiyampaa language) is a singer-songwriter whose work is described as "gentle, intricate and highly melodic". He was nominated in 2023 for a Music Victoria Award for Emerging Talent, and we're thrilled to have him perform locally.

A wonderful article about Williamstown in The Saturday Age:

It has no traffic lights and a “graceful, provincial” feel, but happy locals in this suburb still have a clear view of Melbourne’s skyscrapers.

A new StreetWORKS Walking Map for Footscray has been created featuring 26 works by various artists!

The map coincides with 10 new artworks delivered in a partnership between the Victorian State Government and Maribyrnong City Council to foster creativity, deter vandalism and beautify the Footscray central business district area.

Earlier this week we enjoyed the walking tour with the artists, Local and State Government representatives, local media, and traders and building owners at the StreetWORKS Launch. We learned more from the artists who spoke to their creative process, including personal inspiration for their murals, and engagement with stakeholders.

Pick up a free StreetWORKS walking map at your local library or community centre and explore the City’s artworks with your friends and family. Or to download the Walking Map head to: https://ow.ly/Bcsl50SqC70

Enjoy!

Congratulations to the Melton Botanic Garden volunteer team. The Dryland Eucalyptus Arboretum at this stunning site has received international accreditation!

Melton Botanic Gardens encompass a 25-hectare area of natural beauty and endless discovery made up of indigenous plants and exotic dry-climate plants. The site also features a Nature Play Space for kids, Koori student garden, a lovely lake, a sensory garden and more. Visitors also come from far and wide to the plant nursery over the weekend.

Note: the arboretum is unable to receive a higher accreditation level due to not having any paid staff. It is a wonderful achievement by volunteers.

Visit Melton Botanic Gardens at 40 Lakewood Boulevard, Melton.

Postcards visited our Spotswood last night 😊

They began with a great interview at Candied Bakery , then to Eastern European street food at Stan's Grill, and stopped for a drink at Hudsons Road Wine & Beer.

Check it out (10 mins):

We embark on a bakery tour across the city. There's Balkan-style sandwiches in Spotswood. We relish a beachside getaway in Torquay. Plus, Lauren catches up with ex-Blockheads.

Not long to go! Yesterday marked a significant milestone as the Punthill Sunshine Apartment Hotel sign was installed. And now we are counting down to opening!

Located in the heart of the upcoming redevelopment of Sunshine Station's transport 'superhub', Punthill Sunshine stands on a site steeped in history. Once home to a thriving pottery factory, the location echoes the industrious spirit that has long defined Brimbank. Punthill Sunshine's arrival marks a new chapter while acknowledging the area's rich heritage.
