From 1 January 2025 you can expect to pay $412 for your high-tech Aussie passport.

Compared to the Australian Passport Office’s quoted “minimum of six weeks” to get a new passport or renew your old one at the standard rate of $412, travellers will have the following speedier options:

- a $100 fast track payment (on top of the standard fee) will have your passport processed within five business days
- a $252 priority payment (on top of the standard fee) cuts that time to just two business days

Travel requirements to the UK are changing from 8 January 2025. This includes moving from physical immigration documents to eVisas and introducing Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) which is a digital permission to travel.

If you hold a UK visa and use a biometric residence permit or card to prove their immigration status, you need to get access to an eVisa before you travel and make sure your passport details are up to date: www.gov.uk/eVisa

If you already have an eVisa, you need to inform the UK Government about the passport that you intend to use for travel: www.gov.uk/update-uk-visas-immigration-account-details

If you do not need a visa to visit the UK for short stays of up to six months, you will need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA). You can check when you need an ETA to travel to the UK and can apply here: www.gov.uk/electronic-travel-authorisation

This fascinating round trip from Tokyo includes temples, islands and two of the world’s most poignant cities.

Set sail first to Hakodate and then on to Aomori, renowned for its colourful fish markets. Turning south, continue to Sakata, with its traditional architecture and historic rice warehouses, and then head to Niigata, which is famous for the surrounding rice fields.

South again, call in at Kanazawa, where you can admire the beautiful garden of Kenrokuen, and sail on to Maizuru, which puts Kyoto within reach. The next port of call is Sakaiminato from where we leave Japan and cross the Korea Strait to Busan, home of the beloved temple of Beomeo-sa.

Next, stop at Incheon, gateway to Seoul and continue to Jeju island before crossing the Korea Strait again, this time back to Japan and its now vibrant city of Nagasaki. The turquoise waters of the Miyako islands beckon, followed by the Okinawa archipelago.

Turning north, reach Beppu, famous for its hot springs, and then visit Hiroshima, with its Peace Museum, Memorial Park and more. Next, stop at foodie Kobe before disembarking at Tokyo.
