Today marks 50 years since we landed a Boeing 747 in Darwin to support the evacuation of residents following the devastation of Cyclone Tracy.

The severe category-four cyclone tore through the Northern Territory capital in the early hours of Christmas Day in 1974, killing 66 people and destroying more than 80 per cent of its homes and buildings.

Qantas operated multiple evacuation flights in the days after the cyclone, including two Boeing 747 flights with 673 and 674 people onboard respectively - the latter of which was a world record at the time for most people carried on the aircraft type.

Pilot Donn Howe, who flew the first empty jumbo from Sydney into Darwin for the mercy mission, recalled that the strips of runway lights at the airport were the only lights left working in the city.

In total, Qantas evacuated 4,925 residents from the city in the following days on Boeing 707 and 747 aircraft. Alongside the Royal Australian Air Force and US Air Force, as well as Ansett, Trans Australia Airlines and MacRobertson Miller Airlines, it remains the largest airlift operation in Australian history.

Our thoughts are with all of those who were impacted by Cyclone Tracy.

This is a story about never giving up.

Jeremy Robertson first joined Qantas as a pilot in 2001. In 2010, after a chest infection, he developed type 1 diabetes.

As a consequence he lost his aviation medical clearance to fly. Not one to take this lying down, Jeremy became a doctor of medicine with a focus on aviation.

He was eventually able to get a clearance to fly small aircraft, but not with paying passengers on board. For years, he maintained records of his blood sugar levels whilst flying.

In 2016, he submitted these records to the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA), along with data that the UK and Canadian aviation regulators had on allowing aviators with type 1 diabetes to fly. After three years of review, CASA changed their policies and Jeremy finally regained his full medical clearance to fly in 2020.

Because of his efforts, several other pilots in Australia with type 1 diabetes have been able to continue their careers (the first of which joined Jeremy on the last two flights of his final check, to show his support).

Earlier this year Jeremy completed his re-training as a Boeing 737 First Officer - some 14 years later.

Congratulations, Jeremy!

Say hello to our first Airbus A321XLR! 😍

The aircraft has now progressed to the final assembly line at Airbus' Finkenwerder production facility in Hamburg, Germany ahead of its scheduled delivery in April 2025.

The Sydney Flight Training Centre is officially open!

The training centre is home to five full-flight simulators, three fixed training devices and 10 classrooms and will support thousands of new and existing Qantas and Jetstar pilots every year.

This November marks the 80th anniversary of the loss of Pilot Officer Ross McMaster, the son of Qantas co-founder Sir Fergus McMaster. Growing up in western Queensland during Qantas' early days, Ross was inspired by the spirit of aviation that surrounded him. He joined the Royal Australian Air Force in 1942 where he trained to fly in Tiger Moth biplanes at Narrandera before joining 460 Squadron RAAF in Britain in late 1944.

On November 21, 1944, just weeks after joining, Ross embarked on an operation to attack Aschaffenburg. Tragically, at just 20 years old, his Lancaster was shot down, resulting in the loss of all seven crew members.

Today, on Remembrance Day, we honour Ross and all those who served to protect our nation. We will remember them. Lest we forget.

Qantas customers to remain connected to Lord Howe Island 🏝️

QantasLink and Skytrans are finalising a codeshare agreement that will commence when Skytrans begin operating flights between Sydney and Lord Howe Island.

QantasLink continues to hold the regulated route licence until March 2025, and from then, there will be a transition period which will include the delivery of our three Q200 aircraft to Skytrans to enable the airline to begin operating the route and ensure ongoing connectivity to the island.

The 36-seat Q200 aircraft is the only aircraft in our fleet that is able to operate to Lord Howe Island because of the island’s runway length and is being phased out as part of a major investment in the turboprop fleet to better service regional Australia.

Locals and tourists will continue to be able to book flights on qantas.com, with frequent flyers earning Status Credits and Qantas Points.

Farewell to the Boeing 717 ❤️

Yesterday the final commercial 717 flight for QantasLink operated as QF1511 from Sydney to Canberra, flown on 'Great Otway National Park' (VH-YQS). The aircraft has completed more than 15,000 flights, close to 17,000 flight hours and has safely carried more than one million customers over the past 11 years.

The 717 has been flying in Australia for over 20 years, and are now gradually being replaced by next-generation Airbus A220 aircraft.
