BREAKING NEWS! Australian borders are reopening for tourism after almost two years of travel restrictions. Today, the Prime Minister Scott Morrison announced that starting on February 21, fully vaccinated travellers will be able to enter Australia.

If you find yourself stranded in Australia during the pandemic and your visa is about to expire, the visa subclass 408 (COVID-19 Pandemic Event) might be an option for you. This visa allows eligible applicants to remain legally in Australia while they make arrangements to depart. It also provides temporary work rights to certain applicants working in critical sectors.

You may be eligible if:
• You are unable to leave Australia due to COVID-19 travel restrictions
• Have a current visa that expires in 28 days or less or your last substantive temporary visa expired less than 28 days ago
• Either have evidence from your employer that you have ongoing work in a critical sector and that an Australian Citizen or Permanent Resident cannot fill the position, or demonstrate you can’t meet the requirements of any other visa
• You are able to support your dependants and yourself during the rest of your stay.
• You have not had visa refusals or cancellations since you last entered Australia.
