Dear friends,

On Monday 3rd December 2012, I will be leaving my position as Librarian at the USyd AV Language Library at the University of Sydney. I have made many friends here and have enjoyed working with all of you.

Working at the AV Language Library has been a rewarding journey. Over time, I came to learn a lot about the students and teachers who used the Language Centre and how to help
people find the information they required. The students and teachers I met along the way were friendly, patient, and a pleasure to work with.

I’ve had many wonderful experiences here over the years. In the five and a half years that I’ve been here, I implemented the AV Language Library’s social media sites, improved upon its collection (both physical and online) as well as its website, and learnt a lot about the importance of good customer service along the way. What made these experiences most rewarding was the relationships that were built with customers and colleagues, and the knowledge that was shared.

The University of Sydney community is a friendly and welcoming group of professionals. It has been a real pleasure working with all of you. I thank you all for the great experiences and good memories, and wish you all the best in your future endeavours.

Best regards,
Michelle Liu (Librarian)

p/s: Please do continue to keep in touch with me via Facebook!

***** ANNOUNCEMENT *****

The AV Language Library will close in December 2012 and its video, audio, and printed resources will in the future be made available to students and staff by other means and in other venues. This transition will happen during the period of the University close-down and in early January so that most users of the old facility will not be affected. We are confident that the new arrangements that will be in place after the transition will deliver more effective and efficient access to the Centre’s materials than is currently the case.

Please note the following with regard to this change:

1. All 1400 video files will be uploaded onto Blackboard where students will be able to access them via any computer on campus. (At present they are accessible only through one of the computers in the language labs.) We will create an e-Community on Blackboard so that all University students will be able to access the video files throughout their candidature, regardless of whether they are enrolled in a language unit. The collection will be catalogued and all items will be easy to locate on the Blackboard site.

2. All 2500 audio files will also be uploaded onto Blackboard for use in the same manner as the video files.

3. The Centre’s collection of books—consisting of dictionaries, grammars, and other language-learning printed materials— will be selectively moved to the Fisher Library where they will be properly catalogued and fully integrated into the Library’s collection.

4. Fisher Library has equipment which will provide a pleasant and effective learning environment for all students, including those undertaking language-learning. Apart from Access Centre and Library computers, the Library has collaborative spaces, two home theatres and 4 small sound booths. Two collaborative rooms and the four sound booths can be booked for use.

5. The computer stations in the Self Study room in the Language Study Centre will continue to be available after the old facility closes.
We ask for your understanding and patience while this transition takes place. We anticipate that by early December all video and audio files will have been uploaded onto Blackboard and available for use; the collection of books going to Fisher Library should be available by the commencement of first semester, 2013.

The School will keep everyone updated on the progress of the transition.

For further information please contact Drasko Mitrikeski, School Administration Manager, at [email protected] or Michelle Liu, Librarian, at [email protected] .

Important tips for learning a foreign language:

* Practice Everyday
* Don’t give up
* Don’t limit yourself to one method of learning
* Change your phone and social networking settings to your target language
* Listen to language in everyday use, i.e. radio, TV, movies (with/without subtitles), music
* Read Language it daily content i.e. newspaper, magazines, books, menus, signs, maps
* Download smartphone applications such as translators, language quizzes, etc.
* Label everything in your home in target language to build your vocabulary
* Buy a dictionary in that language or a translation dictionary (both will be ideal)
* Don’t dismiss the fact that learning about the culture is just as important as learning the language

The number of different languages spoken in today’s melting pot of society has contributed to a breakdown in communication. Being able to understand what others are saying is pertinent to everyday casual interactions as well as the global business environment.

Yesterday we looked at Part 1 of language learning. Here's Part 2, which is just as interesting! What do you think of this article?

Language learning myths must be dynamited, blasted into oblivion if we wish to seriously approach language acquisition in our global society.
