Once a year, in April, the vast steppes of Kalmykia are covered with a multi-colored carpet of wild tulips. Blooming tulips shimmer with all the colors of the rainbow - as if thousands of bright fiery, white, orange and pink lights are dancing a mesmerizing dance in the middle of the steppe. And you can also try to find the legendary black tulip among the multi-colored steppe lights, which, according to legend, brings happiness to the finder. All you need to do is to find it and make a wish.

CREDIT Cards
International cards don’t work in Russia. The solution:
1) bring cash up to $10,000 (USD, per person, undeclared).
2) upon arrival, get a Russian sim card, go to the Russian bank and get a Russian debit card. It’s easy and takes less than 30 min.

Recently opened after reconstruction, Pavlovsk Palace in Gatchina, near St Petersburg.

In 1944, the Leningrad authorities decided: it is impossible to restore the Pavlovsk Palace. And it is not even necessary - a tsarist legacy was deeply alien to the ideas of communism.

Pavlovsky Palace was burning for three days. There was no one to extinguish the fire in April 1944. The fire consumed the building and stopped: by that time there was nothing to burn in the palace park. 600 hectares of the once best landscape park in Europe were cut down to the root. On mutilated land, sappers slowly walked through snow dirty from ash, doing their job: retreating from Pavlovsk, the Germans mined the territory. Finally, on the day of his departure, January 24, 1944, the Germans set fire to the palace.

Three weeks after the liberation of Pavlovsk, on February 17, 1944, Anna Zelenova , director of the museum in 1941, started her unprecedented campaign to save the palace. She wrote a a letter to the pilots guarding Leningrad (St. Petersburg): "Can we allow that instead of the Pavlovsk Palace, which we knew and loved well before the war, we loved because of its beauty, now for ever remains in ruins because of A***n cretinism, Hitlerism and fascist obscurantism? No! It depends on you and me. We are pushing the N***s from our land, drape so that you barely have time to carry your airfields. We defeat fascism in hostilities, God himself ordered us to rid our land of the traces of fascist stay, to get Pavlovsk rid of the ruins. Our culture, the legacy of Russia is too depleted during the war. And we have no right to lower Pavlovsk into oblivion, when it can and should be restored to the same level, only it is impossible to slow down."

Anna Zelenova overruled the government's decision. In 1944, she traveled to Moscow and ensured that the palace in Pavlovsk was not cancelled. Later, in the 1950s, she wrote to Molotov, Kosygin, she met with Marshall Kliment Voroshilov.

One lady, who made a history. It took decades.
