I bumped into Sydney character Danny Lim outside the QVB on Friday. For those of you who don't know Danny, he wears these sandwich board type signs with humorous messages and every day he'll be out, waving, dancing and taking selfies with people all around Sydney. It's no exaggeration to say that he brings smiles to hundreds of people every day.
In December 2022, Danny was injured during an attempted arrest by at the Queen Victoria Building, after security guards there asked him to leave. Danny's head hit the floor during the discontinued arrest & he was taken to hospital. The police said they'd conduct an independent review into what happened.
What most people don't know is that Danny never fully recovered from that incident. He continues to suffer from headaches, flashbacks and interrupted sleep and he's become visibly more frail since then. Danny told me that he can't bring himself to enter QVB in case a security guard confronts him, which could set off his PTSD. He has heard nothing from QVB management, let alone the outcome of the police review. He keeps coming into the city though because in his words, "if I stay at home it is too depressing".
This is not right. How can we get some answers for this elderly man and make all of the city a safe place for him once again? He just wants to be able to walk through the QVB and other shopping centres in town without being made to feel unwelcome and threatened.
We're tagging , , , , and .spender to see if we can get some answers for Danny.
