On my last day in HCM City I find a really good coffee shop. The coffee made the traditional way was exquisite. The decor was lovely. The price was right, 40,000VND - about $A2.50.

Workers hard at it trimming trees in 23/9 Park in District 1. Authorities have ordered trees to be trimmed or cut down across the city because they fear citizens may be killed or injured by falling branches or trees in heavy storms. One person has already died, I’m told, from a tree that fell during recent heavy rains.

There is some talk of there being only two memorials to foreign troops in Viet Nam - the Obelisk at Dien Bien Phu and the Cross at Long Tan in Ba Ria Vung Tau Province.

The Obelisk was built by a former French Paratrooper - not a veteran of the battle - on private land at approximately the same location the Para HQ was during the Battle in Dien Bein Phu. It is all a private exercise. It is probably tolerated by the Government because it is a bit of a tourist attraction. Still not a lot of French visit the isolated town in Viet Nam's north-west. However, some French veterans have had their ashes left at the Obelisk.

The Cross at Long Tan is a replica of the original which now sits in the Australian War Memorial, Canberra. The replica was erected by the Long Dat Peoples Committee in 1989 to encourage Australians to visit the province where Australian troops primarily operated during the conflict. In other words, it too is a type of tourist attraction. In museum terms it is an installation - a replica of something that was there to give visitors an impression of how things were.

While neither er****on is officially a memorial, foreigners do tend to treat them as such.

One of my favourite dishes in Việt Nam - Mì Quảng - a rice noodle dish, a specialty of Quảng Nam Province and Đà Nẵng City. Not as moist as some noodle dishes and hugely flavoursome.

Surely the oddest festival anywhere. The Festival of the mucus (firing) crossbow. I think that translation captures the meaning - unless some one can come up with something better.
