Originally in the early 1980’s sightseeing tour bus services were owned and operated by the State Transit Authority (STA). They used single deck buses and charged a fare for each route.
In the early 2000’s City Sightseeing arrived in Sydney with three double decker buses and operated a ‘City Sightseeing’ Sydney tour with open top, double deck buses. As the service became more popular further double deck buses were added to the fleet and a ‘City Sightseeing’ Bondi service was added, only no extra fare was charged for this. The inclusion of ‘two tours for the price of one’ proved extremely popular. The State Transit Authority had to drop the separate fares and for a few years serious competition took place but the passengers were making their choice of sightseeing vehicles obvious to all.
In 2010 City Sightseeing purchased the ‘Explorer’ services from the STA and operated as the ‘City Sightseeing Explorer’. After selling the ‘City Sightseeing Worldwide’ franchise a fleet of new, purpose built double deck buses was purchased from China. The name was changed to ‘City Explorer’, which operated a monopoly hop on - hop off service until 2016 when ‘Big Bus’ purchased the service, the fleet, the depot and the name ‘City Sightseeing Pty Ltd’.
Today ‘Big Bus’ operate the same buses in a maroon and gold livery and to date still have the monopoly for hop on - hop off in Sydney and Bondi.
