This week is Refugee Week!

This year’s Refugee Week theme “Finding Freedom” – with a focus on family – encapsulates the profound journey of resilience, strength, and unity that defines the refugee experience.

Mt Druitt Ethnic Communities Agency and SydWest Multicultural Services during Refugee Week, will aim to shed light on the transformative power of familial bonds, as well as chosen bonds in the face of adversity and emphasise the crucial role families play in providing solace, support, and a sense of belonging to those forced to flee their homelands.

This Refugee Week, explore the stories of refugees, who despite the challenges they encounter, discover a source of freedom within the embrace of their families.

For freedom should not be an ask, it should be a way of life.

Did you remember to book in your health checks last week?

Men's Health Week might be over but it's never too late to stay on top of your health and wellbeing.

This year's theme was about the importance of health checks to identify issues early and save lives.

It’s not too late to take the time and book in for those important health checks we so often put off when we are busy with other things.

Last month Council and our friends from Lyrebird Dreaming attended the Cooee Festival in Peter van Hasselt Park to get community feedback on our Big plans for Little Creek project.

Little Creek runs through the suburbs of Shalvey, Wilmot, Lethbridge Park, Blackett, Bidwell and Emerton and flows through the Yiraaldiya National Park.

Our project aims to ‘decolonise’ Little Creek, most of which is a concrete channel, and naturalise it by planting out the creek banks. We will also seek to improve waterway health by treating stormwater before it runs into the creek. There will also be opportunities to construct walkways for the community to enjoy these areas.

The project is currently at the master plan stage to develop the vision for the creek. Some of this project will be funded from the Stormwater Management Service Charge as part of Council’s Environmental Stormwater Management Program.
A significant component of the project will be reliant on successful grant applications.

We have received strong interest and support from the local community who would like to see Little Creek transformed.

We welcome your feedback and involvement on this important project.

To find out more information and complete a survey please head to https://www.blacktown.nsw.gov.au/Have-Your-Say/Little-Creek-Masterplan-Community-feedback

Did you know fines have significantly increased for Dumping your Rubbish?

The NSW Government has recently announced higher penalties for those doing the wrong thing and dumping rubbish illegally. Fines have more than doubled to $30,000 for companies and $15,000 for individuals for a first offence and even higher for a second.
The increase in fines for illegal dumping and littering makes reporting more impactful and holds individuals and corporations accountable for their actions.

You can report littering and illegal dumping by reporting to EPA, using the link https://www.epa.nsw.gov.au/reporting-and-incidents/reporttoepa or by calling Council on (02) 5300 6000

Submissions close on 21 June 2024 🗣

Do you live in Shalvey, Wilmot, Lethbridge Park, Bidwill, Blackett or the Mt Druitt area?
Did you know that we are developing a masterplan for your local creek known as Little Creek?

We are seeking feedback on our draft Little Creek Masterplan.

Our vision is to transform Little Creek from the current grass and concrete channel into a naturalised creek. We have identified 3 key sites along the creek which have opportunities for naturalisation.

This Masterplan will identify and inform opportunities for potential future works in this Creek.

Some of the key benefits of this Masterplan include:
➡️ increased amenity for the community
➡️ incorporation of community values of this waterway

We want to hear from you, the community that lives in this area, on this draft masterplan.

With the recent flood event that occurred on 5 April, Nurragingy staff were presented with significant challenges, requiring a major clean-up operation to make the reserve safe and prepare for reopening. Thanks to the tireless efforts of our team, the clean-up process was carried out over the course of four days.

The teams were committed to ensure the safety and well-being of our community. Despite the demanding nature of the task at hand and public pressure, all staff worked tirelessly to get the park reopened to the public as soon as possible.

We are working together to build cleaner futures!

In support of the recent get the Site Rite Campaign, we partnered with Bunnings to deliver education stalls at their Blacktown, Minchinbury and Marsden Park locations. We spoke with builders and tradespeople who live and work in Blacktown City about litter, illegal dumping and best practice sediment and erosion controls on and around their worksites. 🪚🪠

Left unmanaged, worksite litter, sediment and construction materials can be transported into our stormwater system and local parklands, polluting our waterways and harming wildlife. 🐝🐸

Avoid litter by placing all rubbish in the bins provided on your worksite.

You can report littering and illegal dumping by contacting Council on 5300 6000 or by reporting to the EPA via the link https://www.epa.nsw.gov.au/reporting-and-incidents/reporttoepa
