✨ Ready to Set Intentions for 2024? ✨

In 2024, skip the annual New Years visit from the inner-critic, telling you all the things you need to 'improve' about yourself, and instead embrace practices that help you shed self-imposed obstacles to the life you want to lead.

🧡
🧡

The transition from one year to the next can offer a precious opportunity to reflect.

Self-enquiry (svadhyaya) is any activity that allows us to quietly observe ourselves: our thoughts, emotions, actions, motivations. What can we let go of, what can we embrace, that moves us closer to our true nature?

While resolutions hinge on willpower, an all-or-nothing mindset, and an attachment to outcomes, intentions (referred to as sankalpas) gently direct our energy towards beliefs and behaviours that align us with our true nature.

🧡
🧡

TIP!

1. You may like to start by relaxing your nervous system with some mindful movement and conscious breathing.

2. Fill your heart by listing all the things you feel grateful for, things you learnt, what went well last year, and acknowledge where you embodied qualities such as patience & compassion (particularly towards yourself!)

3. With a relaxed nervous system, clear head and full heart, set your intention, and let it steep into every moment of your day/week/month, guiding your thoughts, words and actions.

Happy New Year yogis, namaste, you have so got this! 💝

Not familiar with The Yoga Foundation?

The Yoga Foundation (originally started by our own founder and director, Michael de Manincor in 2009) is a registered charity that exists to make yoga's healing and transformative powers accessible to at-risk and vulnerable people who might otherwise miss out, and importantly, for yoga to be offered to people facing a range of challenges in a way that makes them feel safe, comfortable, included and free from any sense of judgement.

Funds raised help change the way vulnerable and at-risk people experience life and helps them see new possibilities. October is a special time for us here at The Yoga Institute and The Yoga Foundation, as it is Mental Health Month.

Together with your help, we want to work towards a kinder world where nobody is left behind from issues such as trauma, PTSD, homelessness, and other severe mental health challenges.

💗 Everyone deserves access to yoga 💗

What Is Our Faculty Up To This Weekend?
5-day iRest experience: 22nd - 26th September

You asked, we listened!

Our faculty here at The Yoga Institute comprises a panel of carefully selected teaching and mentoring staff that our students loooooove! 💗

We recognise many of you would love to know what our illustrious faculty is up to outside of their work at The Yoga Institute.

Members of our beautiful sanga here at The Yoga Institute are busy being of service to the greater community, and helping the healing benefits of yoga transform the world.

Friday 22nd to Tuesday 26th September you can join beloved yoga teacher mentor Catherine Sherlock as she once again hosts amazing iRest director and facilitator, Fuyoko Saramura-Toyota, for a long weekend experience in Baulkham Hills (Sydney) of research-based meditation, relaxation and healing practices.

Research proves that rest is every bit as important as sleep and exercise. Yet many of us struggle to rest, we feel we ought to be doing something, or we succumb to the seduction of distracting forces.

🌟Vital and replenishing rest is a learnable skill, and this weekend is open to anyone🌟

Come enjoy a nourishing and refreshing long weekend with Fuyuko and Catherine to obtain long-lasting benefits to your life.

Fancy a Yoga Class or Related Workshop in Cammeray? 🌀

Here at The Yoga Institute, we are first and foremost a training & education centre, dedicated to providing people formal opportunities to study aspects of yoga in depth, either for people's own interest and personal development, or to one day teach and help heal others.

Our beautiful yoga studio, however, is home to a wide variety of classes and workshops open to anybody hosted by yoga teachers from within our own community of experienced and nurturing teachers.

This collective of independent teachers is called Cammeray Yoga. Much like a conventional yoga studio, you can find a variety of regular yoga & movement classes, plus special workshops. The only difference to a conventional studio is that classes at the Cammeray studio are bookable direct with the teacher in the timeslot you are interested in.

You can check out a monthly snapshot of what's on in the Cammeray Yoga studio anytime here: https://yogainstitute.com.au/cammeray-yoga/

And don't forget to check out some great workshops coming up in July:

🧘 Yoga, Meditation, Reiki & Cacao Ceremony: Hosted by Shayna on Friday 7th July

✍️ CREATE! Movement, art therapy & writing 2-day workshop: Hosted by Heleen on Saturday 15th and/or Sunday 16th July

🎶 Community Kirtan Chanting: Hosted by Madeline, Ateet and Divyatma on Friday 28th July

All enquiries and bookings can be made directly with the relevant teacher.

Even if you've never tried yoga before, come and enjoy an exploration of this wonderful ancient healing practice in our beautiful, soothing Cammeray studio. Welcome home to yourself!

INTERNATIONAL DAY OF YOGA: 21 JUNE

Today is a special day for yogis worldwide. This United Nations-recognised day acknowledges yoga’s role in the holistic health of people worldwide, helping to prevent and treat a range of non-communicable diseases. It also acknowledges yoga’s role in helping people live in greater harmony with our natural environment and indeed, with one another as truly one human tribe.

Here at The Yoga Institute, the 21st of June has an extra layer of significance, as it is also the birthday of cherished link in our teaching traditions, Mr TKV Desikachar, the son of Sri T Krishnamacharya (widely regarded as the father of modern yoga).

On this day, we like to pause to acknowledge the incredible benefits yoga has in our own lives and the lives of people everywhere, and its capacity to further humanity towards a peaceful and sustainable existence. We are filled with gratitude for an infinite number of things - including the custodians of yoga wisdom that came before us and helped yoga be part of our lives here today - and we send love and peace to everyone, everywhere.

New to yoga? Try this 30-second mindful reset:

1. Have a wriggle and a stretch, noting which parts of your body call your attention, and then gently close your eyes if you wish
2. Let your attention feel your feet connected to the earth or the floor
3. Enjoy a few deep and slow breaths in and out, noticing your abdomen move and the cool & warm air at your nostrils
4. Bring to mind a couple of things you feel grateful for, hold your awareness on those things.
5. Notice your state of being, perhaps you noticed a small shift

Repeat as often as you like during the day, it will get easier and easier to do for longer periods of time. Don’t worry if your mind wanders, the fact that you notice your mind wandering IS the practice, you’re doing great! Mini-resets during the day are a fantastic way to nurture your precious nervous system and overall health.

We passionately believe that yoga’s benefits are for everybody. No matter your age, physical abilities, time constraints, and any other perceived limitation you can imagine. Yoga is not about gymnastics or what you choose to wear. True yoga is inclusive, non-judgemental, caring, and supportive. Come as you are. If you can breathe, you can do yoga.

We hope you enjoy some yoga today! If you can’t get to a yoga mat, remember, anything you do with attention to how your feel and how you’re being, is part of a yoga practice.

Om shanti.

Radiate Your Peace

When we can love and accept ourselves, that peace will radiate outwards to others.

Peace and goodwill are states of mind that we can all learn to cultivate at all times.

Start with yourself. You are enough. Kindness and goodwill to yourself will be paid forward to all humanity. A chain reaction starts, love is contagious.

TKV Desikachar described how to know that yoga was making a positive impact on your life, by positive changes in how your lead your life & the decisions you make, and the quality of your relationships with others.

Whatever this time of year means for you - perhaps simply a time to reflect - we wish all beings everywhere peace, love and calm.

May you feel whole
May you know peace 🕊

🦜 EARLY BIRD DISCOUNTS CLOSING SOON: 500-hour Yoga Teacher Training

If you love yoga, you might like to deepen your yoga:

a. Dip your toe into studying with us with our 100-hour Yoga Studies course, or

b. Complete our renowned 500-hour Teacher Training programme and share your love of yoga with others.

🧐 Why consider a 500-hour course?

Most people who want to share their love with the world love learning about yoga, and continue to learn as they move through life, honing their skillsets and taking their own yoga deeper and deeper. So the question is, why not start with a comprehensive training?

We encourage you to do research and compare what it may cost to obtain 500-hours of training with us, versus what it may cost to reach 500-hours in a piecemeal fashion over time.

And with Early Bird discounts still up for grabs, it's a great time to come see how we can help you on your yoga journey!

Let our course director Michael de Manincor take you through our training options and what it's like to study with us this Thursday evening, 15th December ⬅️

GIVING THANKS TO OUR TEACHER TIRUMALAI KRISHNAMACHARYA

On the 18th of November each year yogis all over the world honour the birthday of Tirumalai Krishnamacharya.

Here at the Yoga Institute, Krishnamacharya is the source of the teaching that we humbly endeavour to share in order to keep this river of wisdom flowing.

But more than this, Krishnamacharya was a key link in the chain that sees yoga reach across time and space, to every corner of the modern world, helping countless people today improve the quality of their lives…… including those that have perhaps never heard of him.

This remarkable man left a significant influence on the development and therapeutic use of postures and breathwork, offered deep insights into how Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras could be interpreted, and sought to bring a sense of ‘togetherness’ to the various branches of yoga.

Critically, he celebrated the unique path and abilities of each person, and advocated for yogic techniques to be applied with discernment to the different needs and situation of each individual. This wonderful approach is known as viniyoga.

With deep gratitude, we thank Sri T Krishnamacharya for dedicating most of his life to learning and sharing his extraordinary wisdom.

If you’re curious to read more about Krishnamacharya, or you’ve always wondered why yogis make the effort to honour their forebears and lineage, you can read more at bit.ly/TK-lineage.

Mental Health Month

October is Mental Health Month, with World Mental Day just one week away.

Here at The Yoga Institute, October is a very special month, close to our hearts.

In yogic terms, mental health is more than simply the absence of an illness or condition, it is the mind functioning in a clear, calm, focussed and self-aware state.

As yogis, we accept that emotions such as sadness and grief will visit all of us.

Our yoga practice can help us move back into a state of balance, rather than feel stuck in or controlled by a particular emotion.

Understanding the human condition is core to everything we do here at The Yoga Institute. We believe mental health is the birthright of everyone, and we are passionate about the role of the appropriate yogic techniques for the improved health of everyone.

This month, we dedicate our practices to those enduring hardships, and we send a vibration of love and healing to all in need.

May you feel safe, seen and heard. May you know that you are unique, important, special and loved. May you know calm, security and peace 🧡.

8th International Day of Yoga - 21st June
🧘 🧘‍♀️

Here at The Yoga Institute, the 21st of June is a very special day!
🧡

• Together with the rest of the world, we mark International Day of Yoga, as recognised under the auspices of the United Nations. This year's theme is Yoga For Humanity, acknowledging yoga's role in "promoting sustainable lifestyle in harmony with planet Earth"

🍃

• The 21st of June is also the birthday of T.K.V Desikachar - the son and three-decade student of the father of modern yoga, Tirumalai Krishnamacharya - and key figure in our traditions and heritage here at The Yoga Institute;

Mr Desikachar was teacher and mentor to our founder and director, Mr Michael de Manincor, at the The Krishnamacharya Yoga Mandiram (KYM) in Chennai, India.
