Day 10, last day before we fly home tonight. We used the train & headed out to visit the Marakina Shoe Museum featuring former First Lady Imelda Marcos's shoe collection (749 pairs as of 2020). We then found our way to the ferry which cruised past the Malacañang Palace, the official residence and office of the president of the Philippines (no photos allowed).

Everywhere we went they had Christmas decorations up & were playing Christmas songs (so early!)
Now it's time to head home. We saw a lot in our 10 days with heaps more left to explore.

Day 9 we woke up with views of the Rice terraces in Batad from our guest house & then trekked out to where our jeepney met us. Then it was a short drive back to our main van & driver for the 9 hour drive back to Manila. Less traffick being Sunday but still busy as we reached the outskirts of the city, which goes on forever. Beautiful scenery along the way, plenty of rice fields, tropical vegetation and small towns.

Day 8 was spent exploring the rice terraces, two of which are Unesco World Heritage listed (Batad & Bangaan). We were lucky to have nice sunny viewing for the morning but showers came in as we were finishing a walk in the terraces & has settled for the evening. Stunning scenery & amazing to hear how the rice growing works here. It's all organic & all grown for personal consumption as apparently none is exported from the Philippines.

Day 4, a travel day today heading to Cebu. A quick look at a small wetland area on Boracay, then taxi (Grab actually, the Uber equivalent here) boat, plane to Cebu & another Grab car where we asked to go to our hotel via Mactan Shrine as it was not too far from the airport. A quick stop at the Shrine then onto our hotel in the city, ready for a 4:30am pick up 😥

Day 2 & 3 we are having some beach R&R on the small island of Boracay, so lovely!

Taiwan Day 8 - our last full day in Taipei. We went to the top of Taipei 101 Observatory for some great views over the city (a bit cloudy today!). Then we visited The National Revolutionary Martyrs’ Shrine & saw a changing of the guards ceremony & then we finished the day off at Tamsui for a walk along the riverside promenade, fisherman's wharf, temples, forts and plenty of atmosphere

Taiwan Day 7 - today was all about the stunning Taroko National Park with its beautiful gorge. We are visiting in the dry season so got to see all of the stunning rocky river beds with a little water. In bad typhoon seasons it can rise as much as 10 metres, that would be a very different site to see. After Taroko, we made our way back to Taipei taking in more coastal scenery & then city outskirts with so many rice fields.

Taiwan Day 6 - more coastal scenery, gorges & national parks today - stunning!
