Oly 🗣️ Place Branding ROI - What Your Mayor, Councillors, Directors, and Bosses Need to Know.

Have you ever considered how much the perception of your city, region, or destination contributes to its economic success?

Let’s talk about something that blew my mind while reflecting on some of the presentations at City Nation Place Global 2023. One, in particular, left me gobsmacked: Jose Filipe Torres’, the CEO & Global Director for Nation and Place Branding at Bloom Consulting, presentation on the correlation between perception, reputation, and economic performance.

Jose delivered a data-packed case for why managing perception isn’t optional, it’s essential. 👏
----
➡️ Perception: The Driver of Decisions

Perception influences 86% of the willingness to visit, invest, or live in a place. Let that sink in. Torres broke it down further:
▪️Tourism: 80.5% impact on the willingness to visit.
▪️Investment: 81.5% impact on the willingness to invest.
▪️Talent: 85.5% impact on the willingness to live.

It’s a simple equation: positive perception = higher willingness.
If a place doesn’t actively cultivate a positive image, it risks losing visitors, investors, and talent to destinations that do.
----
➡️ Quantifying the Impact

This is where the numbers get fascinating. On average, perception accounts for 26% of tourism receipts, foreign direct investment (FDI) inflows, and talent attraction. Here’s what that looks like:
▪️Tourism: 23.5% of revenue stems from perception.
▪️Investment: 30.5% of FDI inflow is tied to perception.
▪️Migration: 24% of population growth (expats) is perception-driven.

Think about it: if a city generates $100 million in tourism revenue, $24 million comes from its perception. And even a tiny improvement in perception - just 0.1% - has a massive ripple effect:
▪️Tourism: $1.24 billion USD for countries, $0.97 billion USD for cities.
▪️Investment: $1.95 billion USD for countries, $0.95 billion USD for cities.
▪️Migration: 340,000 expats for countries, 100,000 expats for cities.

Small changes. Big outcomes.
----
➡️ Why Perception Management Isn’t Optional

Managing perception isn’t just a marketing strategy - it’s an economic imperative. Neglecting this is like leaving millions (if not billions) of dollars on the table. It’s about shaping your place’s image to inspire tourism, investment, and migration.

Oliver 🗣️ "Doing good" and "making money" are not mutually exclusive.

I’ve long been fascinated by the potential of the social enterprise business model, and all the signs are pointing to huge growth in this space.

Watching friends and colleagues in the environmental and not-for-profit sectors grapple with burnout has made me question why these organisations face so many hurdles in achieving sustainable impact.

So here's my thoughts...

Okay, real talk - I didn’t even know what ‘verticalisation’ was until just a couple of hours ago. But after catching up on Johannes Reck’s interview at Skift’s Megatrends event in New York last year, my mind is ticking.

Big news! 🎉 Over the past year, DMS has jumped from 50% to a solid 76% on our Strive 4 Sustainability Scorecard – and we’re pretty chuffed about it!

We've levelled up across all four areas:
🌿 Environmental
🫂 Socio-economic
🌏 Cultural impact
♻️ Sustainable management.

The game-changer? Our new 'DMS Impact Plan – 2024' – it’s our roadmap for action moving forward.

We’re already brewing up fresh ideas for our 2025 Impact Plan. Stay tuned! 🚀

Last night, DMS, together with our partners Fred&Co Digital and Leonards Advertising, attended the Mumbrella Travel Awards in Sydney.

We were thrilled to be finalists in two categories - Breakthrough Destination of the Year and Campaign of the Year for our Where Time Does Wonders campaign, created for our client Port Macquarie Hastings Council and destination brand Greater Port Macquarie .

So, how did we fare? We won both categories! What makes this achievement even more remarkable is that we stood out among powerhouse finalists like Tourism WA, Tourism and Events Queensland, True North and Contiki - huge destinations and brands in the industry. It is also the second consecutive year we have secured a client Breakthrough Destination of the Year after our win with Snowy Mountains in 2023.

Driving results for our clients is always our goal. Winning awards on the back of these results is the cream on the top. Our formula for success?
🔰 A single, focused target market
🔰 Market insights and meaningful interpretation for consumers
🔰 A brand strategy to position the destination (it’s about more than attributes)
🔰 A cohesive brand look and feel
🔰 Creative campaigns driven by consumer insights and brand assets
🔰 Strategic media buys with measurable objectives
🔰 Leveraging owned channels with paid and earned media
🔰 Continuous performance reviews and campaign adjustments

A big thank you to our client, Port Macquarie Hastings Council, for trusting us with everything from brand strategy and creative development with Swell Design Group, to the brand rollout roadmap, product and experience mentoring programs, a three-year marketing plan, campaign strategy and delivery, and the management of their visitor facing social media channels. Your trust empowered us to drive impactful results.

And award season is just kicking off. We’ve got Finch Hatton MTB (Mackay Regional Council) at the Queensland Tourism Awards and Barrington Coast (MidCoast Council) at the NSW Tourism Awards 🤞🤞

If you’d like the opportunity to become an award-winning destination, please get in touch.

Off to a cracker start at City Nation Place Global in London. Welcome reception at the Houses of Parliament, a jammed packed day filled with insights on best practice place branding, seeing the amazing revitalisation of the London Heritage Quarter with real impact, and a breakfast briefing this morning with Qasá Alom, host of the BBC Travel Show. To top it all off, we’re a finalist in the CNP Awards for Best Communication Strategy - Tourism for our work with Port Macquarie Hastings Council and Greater Port Macquarie. The smile says it all. 😊

30/10/2024

👏 It's great to see MidCoast Council is a finalist in the NSW Tourism Association NSW Tourism Awards, yet again, for their Marketing Campaign 'Whatever It Takes' for their destination brand Barrington Coast.

🌟 DMS' strategic and creative approach, with partners Fred&Co Digital and Leonards Advertising, have led to this 3-year campaign building exceptional brand equity and loyalty. Also highlighting the cost efficiencies of a campaign with longevity as the focus.

Keeping our fingers crossed 🤞 The winner will be announced on Thursday 28th November at the 2024 NSW Tourism Gala.

We started the week on a high and we’re riding it all the way to the weekend! We’re thrilled to announce that Greater Port Macquarie's Where Time Does Wonders brand and campaign has secured two finalist spots at the 2024 Mumbrella Travel Marketing Awards! 🏆 We’ve been nominated for Ad Campaign of the Year and Breakthrough Destination of the Year.

This follows the exciting news earlier this week when we were named finalists at the City Nation Place Awards for the same campaign. It’s been an incredible journey for the destination and our amazing clients Port Macquarie Hastings Council.

Winners will be announced at Mumbrella’s Travel Marketing Awards ceremony on November 7th in Sydney. We’ll be the loud table - and hopefully celebrating with a couple of trophies! 🥂 If you're there, come say hello!

As always, a big fist-bump to our brilliant partners Fred&Co Digital, Leonards Advertising, Swell Design Group, and Remy Brand Photography 👊

Kicking off the week with incredible news! We’re thrilled to announce that we’ve been selected as a finalist in the City Nation Place 2024 for Best Communication Strategy - Tourism with our Where Time Does Wonders Destination Brand and Campaign for the Port Macquarie Region on behalf of Port Macquarie Hastings Council.

Being recognised in such prestigious global place branding awards is HUGE! For Greater Port Macquarie to stand alongside incredible destinations like Travel Alaska, GreeceVisit, Destination Vancouver, and our fellow Aussie benchmark Discover Tasmania is an achievement we’re immensely proud of.

The winners will be revealed at the City Nation Place Global Conference in London on Thursday, 7th November. Carl was already heading to the place branding Conference. Who knows, he might be bringing an award home with him 🤞

A huge shoutout to our amazing partners who helped make this campaign and brand a reality – Swell Design Group, Fred&Co Digital, and Leonards Advertising.

We did it! DMS, alongside our amazing creative partner Swell Design Group, are thrilled to have won the 2024 Good Design Australia Award for Excellence in Communication Design – Branding & Identity! This recognition is for our collaborative work on the Botanic Gardens of Sydney brand identity.

This project has been an absolute joy to be part of, bringing a fresh, purpose-driven brand to life that highlights the power of plants and the vital role the Gardens play in conservation, education, and community.

A massive shoutout to the bold and visionary team at Botanic Gardens of Sydney who embraced this new approach and trusted us with their brand’s future. The feedback from staff and visitors has been incredible, and this award is the icing on the cake!

Time to celebrate 🍾

Charlotte 🗣️ I’m in New York for the Skift Global Forum and stumbled upon the Great Elephant Migration installation in the Meatpacking District. This display beautifully brings the majesty of elephant migration to life in an urban space, while also raising funds to amplify Indigenous knowledge and inspire us to share space.

As I explored the installation, I was struck by the fusion of art and nature in an unexpected setting and the transformative power of placemaking. It's incredible how activating a site can tell stories of distant lands and natural events, opening up endless opportunities for creative collaborations with nonprofits or organisations.

Beyond traditional placemaking techniques, we can create immersive experiences that captivate and educate, just like CJ Hendry's "The Flower Market" installation. Her work, now in Brooklyn after a sudden relocation, (due to too many people showing up. People love this stuff) showcases the impact of art in activating spaces and fostering community engagement and connections.

Both installations - The Great Elephant Migration and The Flower Market - move us, tell stories, and create resonant experiences. Imagine reimagining urban spaces with this kind of energy; the potential for transformation is limitless!

Oliver 🗣️ Okay, real talk – I didn’t even know what ‘verticalisation’ was until just a couple of hours ago. But after catching up on Johannes Reck's (Co-founder of GetYourGuide) interview at Skift’s Megatrends event in New York last year, my mind is ticking. 🤔

Verticalisation is more than just a trend; it’s a strategy for sustainable success. It’s about being the best at what you do, fostering real relationships, and making a lasting impact on your customers and your community.

A quick shout out to Sean O'Neill for facilitating an awesome interview and for asking the big questions. 👏
