NAIDOC Week is an opportunity for us all to recognise the rich heritage, contributions, and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders all over Australia. This year's NAIDOC Week 2024 Theme, 'Keeping the Fire Burning! Blak, Loud and Proud' celebrates the enduring strength and vitality of First Nations peoples, the flames symbolic of connection to country, each other, and long-lasting, rich traditions. Fire is a resilient element, its attributes thought of as essential to transformation, safety, and sparking creativity to burn bright for generations to come. Design tells a story, and by recognising how design can unite communities in reflecting the narratives of the land, the history, and the people – we form a bridge connecting us to the past, thereby deepening cultural understanding. Architecture plays a unique role in this process, acting as a vessel for cultural richness, and a medium for connection.
At A+ Design Group, our design philosophy strives to create spaces which resonate with people, our designs transcending just buildings to become places of celebration of heritage and community. By blending the traditional with the modern, our projects can foster a shared appreciation for the history that shapes our present and future. A+ Design Group is excited to reflect on our past projects integrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art into innovative design and building façades. Partaking in a design for the Riverside Theatre in Parramatta, we developed a towering mirror artwork on a conference centre situated by the Parramatta River – the 'Meeting Place'. Collaborating with Danny Eastwood Aboriginal Art, a member of the Indigenous Australian Ngemba tribe, A+ celebrates Aboriginal artists by integrating their works into the façade. This design of this centre derives from the language of the past, combining Indigenous Australian art with technology and ESD principles into a contemporary hub of innovation.
