Cocky Guides is celebrating its 6th birthday with a brand refresh and opportunities for visitor economy businesses to join its 2025 tour schedule.

Six years ago, I tested an idea to develop a new way of travel called sensory tourism. Sensory tourism seeks to present destinations differently, without sight, for blind and low-vision travellers. Today Cocky Guides is an award-winning not-for-profit, accessible tourism business for blind and low-vision Australians.

Cocky Guides' success relies on collaboration with visitor economy businesses in destinations they visit to assist in providing service excellence for blind and low-vision travellers. Since its launch in 2018, Cocky Guides has returned over one and a half million dollars to the Australian visitor economy.

Five key statistics that highlight Cocky Guides contribution to Australia’s visitor economy over the past six years include:

1. Facilitated over 1,500 individual passenger movements for blind & low-vision Australians
2. Delivered 385 tours
3. Visited 70 destinations across Australia
4. Contributed over $1,500,000 to Australia’s visitor economy
5. Worked with over 170 Australian visitor economy businesses

I believe what makes Cocky Guides extra special, apart from the multi-sensory experiences we create for our travellers, is the power of our advocacy for accessible and inclusive travel. We advocate by being out and about with boots on the ground, in destinations and working with a wide range of visitor economy businesses across Australia. Our brand refresh includes a new logo as a shield, representing an ongoing team effort, plus simple contrasting brand colours on marketing assets for people with low vision who engage with us.

Right now, Cocky Guides has its sights set on engaging more visitor economy businesses and destinations for its 2025 tour Australian schedule. This is an excellent opportunity to partner with Cocky Guides and discover how most businesses are ready to welcome blind and low-vision travellers with the support of experienced trip leaders and support guides.

Are you an accommodation provider, tourism attraction, or hospitality venue operating within the Australian visitor economy that is interested in hosting a Cocky Guides group?

An expression of interest can start by sending an introduction email to [email protected]

Who’s up for a laugh and dinner on Saturday 17 August?

Join Cocky Guides and Coalcliff Surf Life Saving Club at the volunteer run Coledale RSL for Comedy for A Cause! Raising funds for Coalcliff SLSC.

The lineup for an evening of comedy on 17 August celebrating the season launch of Coalcliff Surf Life Saving has been announced

Comedians Gary Eck, Daniel Townes, Amanda Gray, and Mat Wakefield will bring their talent to the Illawarra on Saturday, 17 August. They will join Coalcliff Surf Life Saving Club to kick off their 101 years of association with surf lifesaving at Coledale RSL.

“One of the core values Coalcliff has created over the past 100 years is community. It’s great to bring together talent from International Comedy Festivals to our community. This event is another example of how the club and our community can engage beyond public safety on the beach,” said James McFarlane, President of Coalcliff Surf Life Saving Club.

Headlining the evening is Gary Eck, undoubtedly one of Australia’s most popular and respected comics. Gary has performed worldwide, from Singapore to Paris to New York and London, and has performed comedy shows at the Edinburgh, Melbourne, and Sydney Comedy Festivals.

In addition to a successful stand-up career, Gary has ventured into film and TV. He co-wrote and co-directed Happy Feet Two with Academy Award winner George Miller and voiced several characters for the film.

Gary won the world’s largest short film competition, Tropfest, with his short, The Money and took second place two years prior with his comedy short Tragic Love. Eck co-wrote and starred in the cult hit You Can’t Stop the Murders (now being turned into a musical!) and featured in the film Boytown alongside Mick Molloy and Glen Robbin’s.

A one-course dinner is now included at this supported event. For more information, check availability and book your supported trip, visit https://www.cockyguides.com.au/tours/

Explore the outback of North Queensland beyond Cairns from Tuesday, 22 October 2024, to Monday, 28 October 2024.

We meet in Cairns and spend the night before an early start on the famous Savannahlander train. The train will take you up the Kuranda Range to the edge of the Outback Savannah Country.

Then, we will transfer to a bus for a ride to our accommodation at Mount Surprise, where we will spend two nights discovering the Undara Lava Tubes.

Continue for two nights at Cobbold Village to explore Cobbold Gorge. Return to Cairns for a night before your journey home, or add a Cairns extension.
