They can’t fully switch it off because they are voluntary breathers – that they need to remain partially ‘on’ so they remember to come up to breathe. They usually snooze just beneath the surface and stay almost still in what scientists call the ‘logging’ position … cos they, well, look kinda like logs. Happy International Dolphin Day! At least once a week we get visited by dolphins when we’re out with the whales – and with their bouncy, friendly antics they do their best to steal the show. We’ve been seeing quite a few babies amongst the pods out there recently, too – so cute! The species we see around Cronulla are bottlenoses and common dolphins – but there’s nothing ‘common’ about how spectacular they are! Did you know that the underside of every whale’s tail is different, with markings that work kind of like our fingerprints (so the markings can be used to identify every individual)? When we get good, clear photos of whale tails, we submit them to Happy Whale – a global online database that tracks the world’s whales by cataloguing each one’s tail markings. It’s pretty amazing because it shows you where the whales were before you saw them – and sometimes you’ll find a whale that the scientists haven’t even seen before. To be part of it you’ve just got to be in the right place at the right time, with a camera/iphone, when a whale gives you a clear view of its tail. And then, upload your pic to Happy Whale. Easy as!
