Sydney Greeter Megan had a wonderful time recently on her trip to Japan meeting up with Tokyo Greeter, Sanae. With a shared love of experiencing special moments, a visit to the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building afforded Megan the chance to play the famous Tocho Omoide Piano. Visiting a Shinto Shrine and famous Buddhist Temple in Fukagawa helped familiarise Megan with aspects of Japanese culture. Of course, the two shared much about ‘greeting’ and why they love hosting guests from around the world.

Carole from USA had this feedback on her greet with Frances:

“I had such a terrific time with Frances. It was as if I was walking with a long time friend. Frances provided great resources and was an abundance of information on present and past Sydney history. Contacting Sydney Greeters was one of the best things I did to plan my visit to Sydney!”

Our Greeter Ross is enjoying his European holiday and caught up with some recent guests in England. He reports:
“Last month, I had the pleasure of showing Brian and Lee from the UK around Sydney. A few days ago they reciprocated and took me on a lovely walk around their hometown of Reading, culminating in a tour of the National Trust stately home Basildon, where Brian volunteers assisting visitors. Basildon is a very familiar location from many British period series and movies.”

Our greeter Michele enjoyed the opportunity to practice her ‘Deutsche’ with German visitors Juergen, Daniela and their three daughters recently. They initially planned to take the 12 km Harbour Foreshore Walk but needed to adjust their plans when the rain started. Instead, they visited The Rocks Discovery Centre to explore Sydney's history. After a brief break in the clouds, they took a ferry to Manly. The day's menu included ice creams and kebabs, and the chicken salt (an Australian invention) on their hot chips was particularly enjoyed. In the afternoon, they said their goodbyes at Pitt Street Mall, where the family was looking forward to some clothes shopping before returning home.

Victoria met Annette and Lee from Queensland on a sunny Sydney morning at Customs House to see the in-floor model and familiarise them with the layout of the city. They strolled through the laneways of The Rocks and read about Jack Mundey who was prominent in the green bans and the battle to save The Rocks. They climbed the stairs to Foundation Park and admired The Garrison Church. They wound their way through Barangaroo Reserve following the shoreline to cross The Pyrmont Bridge. Lee was interested to see the many new buildings and how Sydney had changed in the 30 years since he last visited. As Victoria lives locally, she invited the guests to see her heritage home and enjoy a ‘cuppa’.

Hayden reports on his first solo greet: “Jane and Larry from the U.K. were great company as we hiked from Taronga Zoo Wharf to Balmoral via Middle Head. The walk covers a distance of 12.5 kilometres, taking 3.5 hours on an established track alongside Sydney Harbour. The couple enjoyed the landmarks and accompanying history including the numerous gun emplacements guarding Sydney Harbour (with none fired in anger). Eventually we arrived at the beach where Jane and Larry repaired to a local favourite, “Bottom of the Harbour”, for fish and chips.

Lena and Dominik left Germany in January, so were well travelled before meeting Greeter Sally in Sydney. They caught a ferry to East Balmain via Milson’s Point, where most of the passengers disembarked for Luna Park. The deserted Balmain back streets and parks were a contrast to the buzz of Darling Street with its crowded cafes, pubs, boutiques and historic buildings. Balmain and Rozelle markets were tempting, but it was a case of “look, don’t buy” as their backpacks were already full. After lunch at The Old Rosebud cafe, they said farewell and the visitors headed for an afternoon in Glebe and Newtown.

Greeter Karen, together with Linda and Richard from the United Kingdom headed off to cross the Harbour Bridge and to get an advance peak from road level of the bridge climb they would be doing a bit later in their stay. They then explored and had a rest in Wendy’s Secret Garden where the trio met and exchanged ideas with fellow travellers. Strolling along the promenade they posed for a photo beneath the big smile entrance to Luna Park. A ferry trip to Pyrmont Bay and a walk through Tumbalong Park into Chinatown followed. Linda and Richard said they are thoroughly enjoying their first visit to Australia.

Sydney Greeter Loretta and Bimy from Canada (also formally a Loretta!) met at the Marriott in the city. Our guest was keen to take a ferry ride somewhere so they headed east across the harbour. After a delightful lunch and a glass of wine by the water at the Watson’s Bay Hotel, they walked over to the Gap. Bimy was in awe of the sheer beauty of the sandstone structures and the waves beating endlessly at the bottom of the cliff faces. The two ‘Loretta’s’ got on famously and shared many interests. Another great day out!

At the beginning of a nine day stay in Sydney, Canadians Angela and Jim were keen to obtain information about the many things to experience in our city and learn how to navigate public transport. Greeter Megan assisted with the purchase of Opal Cards and a visit to the Tourist Information Centre at Circular Quay. The visitors were happy to visit two less well-known spots on their Greet. First, the Chinese Garden of Friendship at Darling Harbour, where the trio enjoyed a peaceful stroll and chat. The afternoon was perfect for a short ferry ride and the group set off for Cockatoo Island. The island was hosting a large group of school students, who were camping there. It’s amazing how Sydney life, through the eyes of a local, can provide a unique experience for those visiting our wonderful city.

Alexander and Marianne from Germany set a challenge for our Greeter Joanne. Having been to Sydney five times, they wanted to see and experience something new. A walk to see hidden artworks in laneways that follow the Tank Stream proved just what they wanted. A quick train ride for a pie at the Pie Tin in Newtown topped off a fun day for the retired tram driver.

The huge swell in Sydney Harbour meant a trip on the Manly ferry was not an option so Cockatoo Island was the next choice for Jean, Willie, Gail and Larry from the US. With greeter Christina they wandered the island looking at the incredible sandstone grain silos and old colonial buildings then a quick coffee with some home-made ANZAC biscuits fueled them for their next leg. Returning to Barangaroo, the intrepid wanderers continued through Tumbalong Park to Darling Square for a dumpling lunch, then caught the light rail to the QVB. A walk ensued through this iconic building as well as the beautiful Strand Arcade, then up to Macquarie Street to see the sandstone buildings of colonial days. Their day finished in the Botanic Gardens admiring the huge Port Jackson figs with their visiting cockatoos.
