NORTHERN BEACHES PUBLIC SPEAKING 🥈
Today Kali and Charlotte from Year 6 represented Sacred Heart at the Northern Beaches Cluster Public Speaking Final! This was held at St Rose and each school had two outstanding students to represent them. Mr Michael Regan, Independent Member for Wakehurst attended and Mater Maria teachers and students adjudicated. Well done to all speakers and we are very excited to announce that Charlotte came 2nd and will now progress to the Broken Bay level.

YEAR 1 RETREAT
Yesterday our Year 1 students, along with parent volunteers and staff, visited Mary MacKillop Place at North Sydney. This was a chance for everyone to reflect, connect to their faith and connect to the environment around them and each other. Students engaged in activities, visited the museum to see where Mary MacKillop, our first saint, lived and how she lived and visited the chapel and her tomb.
The students were so quiet and reflective in the chapel and represented our school beautifully.
Thank you to Mrs McCamey for all of her organisation for this day and giving the students this opportunity.

We are so appreciative of how Kay and our HUB president, Amber, work together to make these days special for our community. And thank you to all of our amazing parent volunteers. They couldn’t do it without you!

At Catholic Schools Broken Bay, we firmly believe that "Safeguarding is Everybody's Responsibility," which is why we fully embrace events like National Child Protection Week.

The week of 1-7 September 2024 holds a powerful message, "Every child in every community needs a fair go," alongside the theme "Every conversation matters." This event seeks to engage, educate, and empower all Australians to better understand child abuse and neglect, and to work collectively as a community to safeguard our children by implementing preventive measures.

Our schools provide opportunities for our students to use resources to learn about online safety, including protective behaviours, 'unsafe secrets', inappropriate questions and requests and who they can go to for help.

When it comes to friendships, nothing sparks a bigger Friendship Fire® than disrespect. 🔥😳

In our Friendology curriculum for schools, we teach students that respect is when “Your friend accepts who you are – your thoughts, feelings, and opinions – even if they are different.”

This month, our URSTRONG Schools are really digging into and how to show it in friendships - even during conflict! Teachers, your August newsletter is in your inbox with a ‘sweet’ lesson, an article for your parents, an invitation to a webinar (you won’t want to miss this one!!), and a celebration! ✨👏

SAFEGUARDING IN OUR SCHOOLS
All of our staff engaged in training in our school library last night from our Catholic Schools Broken Bay Safeguarding team. Safeguarding is a priority for our school system in order to create a safe and supportive environment for children to learn and grow. All staff are expected to promote child safety by having a clear understanding of their Safeguarding responsibilities and act in accordance with those responsibilities.

STUDENT RETREATS - KINDY
Last term our first Student Retreat for 2024 kicked off with Kindergarten spending the day at the Ku-ring-gai Wildflower Gardens. Each grade will have a student retreat day at a place of natural wonder or worship and at these retreats our students have the opportunity to reflect and connect to their faith, the environment and each other. We are always very appreciative of the parents who engage in these days and help facilitate the student groups.
This term many more grades will have their retreat day, with Year 6 heading to Manly tomorrow.

GRANDPARENTS DAY
We are so excited to welcome our grandparents and grandfriends to Sacred Heart tomorrow for Grandparents Day. This is a special day where they can visit the classrooms, attend a beautiful mass in the church and then enjoy morning tea in the hall with a performance from our band as well. Our annual Book Fair will also be running tomorrow from 8:15am before school and until 3:30pm after school.

Let’s be honest, friendships are easy for kids when they’re getting along. 👏 However, Friendship Fact #1 reminds us that “No friendship (or relationship) is perfect.” This means, it’s normal to have Friendship Fires® once and a while! 🔥 But, what if it’s MORE than once & a while… What if these Fires are constant?

Many kids at our URSTRONG Schools will admit they’ve experienced a high-conflict friendship…and it can feel very challenging when a friendship goes from the Green-Zone to the Red-Zone regularly. 🥴 Words that children often use to describe these up-and-down friendships include: unpredictable, hard, and exhausting.

“Fiery Friendships” can feel especially confusing for parents, as their child oscillates between “Best Friends” and “They’re not invited to my birthday party!” For teachers, these students can sometimes cause a lot of drama for classmates who sometimes find themselves caught in the middle (what we call in our Friendology friendship skills curriculum, a Friendship Sandwich! It’s sticky and messy in there!).

So, what can we do to support a child in this type of everyday-is-different friendship? 🤔 Pop on over to our blog for lots of tips and links to FREE resources for parents. And, a massive thanks to our incredible team of URSTRONG Schools who are empowering students with friendship skills every day! 👏👏👏
