What was a Sparrow Starver?
Once upon a time……..woodblocks were used to line the streets of Sydney. Blackbutt and Tallowwood were used as they showed the least amount of deterioration and were found to be hard wearing and almost maintenance free.
By 1900, from Broadway to Dawes Point and from Darling Harbour to Kings Cross the streets were paved in woodblocks until 1932.
The streets were busy with large numbers of horses and carriages, so during this time, one of the most desirable jobs for young lads was to be a blockboy. They were employed by the City of Sydney to clean up the horse dung left behind. They were a common sight on the streets of Sydney and were fondly nicknamed “sparrow starvers.”
To this day, the woodblocks still sit underneath the tar that cover the city streets.

Botany Bay was originally called Sting Ray Harbour by James Cook due to the large number of stingrays they caught.
However, he later changed the name because of the large variety of new plants found by Sir Joseph Banks, the botanist on board the Endeavour in 1770.
