Whatâs stopping you from getting outside more this year? đĽžâ¨
We get itâlife is busy, and weekends fill up fast. Thereâs always somethingâa birthday, a lunch, or a never-ending to-do list. But hereâs the thing: what about YOU?
You deserve time to recharge, reset, and reconnect with yourself. And hereâs the secret to making it happen: commit to planning it in.
Look at your calendar, pick a weekend, and lock it inâyes, even if âsomething might come up.â
Spoiler: something always comes up. But when you prioritise yourself and make that commitment, youâll feel amazing. Having something to look forward to, like a day hike or a little weekend campout, will leave you feeling re-energised and more present for the people and things you care about.
Starting an overnight hike (or any new adventure) can feel a bit daunting at first. Thatâs why going with a groupâespecially for your first timeâmakes it so much easier and way more fun!
Here are 3 simple tips to help you get started:
1ď¸âŁ Pack Smart and Keep It Simple
Start with a bag or even a box at home. Begin collecting small essentials: socks, a hat, hiking poles, water bottles. You donât have to buy everything at onceâtick items off bit by bit.
You can hike in tights. You could even hike in cotton (though we donât recommend it). Maybe your first step is treating yourself to a merino T-shirt. BINGOâone step closer!
2ď¸âŁ Get Your Footwear Right
Comfortable, well-fitting shoes are the most critical piece of gear. They need to provide traction, comfort, and durability. If youâre starting out and on a budget, heavy-duty runners will do just fine. A professional fitting can help you avoid blisters and misery (trust us, your feet will thank you!).
3ď¸âŁ Learn About Your Destination
Use apps like AllTrails, Organic Maps, or Maps.Me to plan your route. National Parks websites also provide great info on the best trails, seasonal conditions, and things to watch forâlike river crossings after heavy rain. Join Facebook hiking groups to ask questions and learn from others whoâve been before.
