Hi friends coming up THIS SATURDAY night at the excellent Catfish Bar in Fitzroy I'm very excited to be presenting THE HOLY SOUL (Sydney) for the Melbourne launch of their new album GET OLD! Sharing the bill are the amazing LO CARMEN, CLAIRE BIRCHALL & MICKELSON (US).
The Holy Soul have been experimenting with rock n’ roll and everything that borders on or intersects with it. Led by songwriter and guitarist Trent Marden alongside Sam Worrad (Bass), Jon Hunter (Guitar) and Kate Wilson (Drums) they have released 4 albums and a number of singles, EPs, demos, compilations and collaborative projects. Producer of ’Get Old!’, Robyn Hitchcock says: "The Holy Soul fall into the un-niche that is Art Rock: they are blissfully genre-free, though you could safely say they aren't pop music. It's the sound of four musicians being themselves, reacting as they effervesce in the glass of existence, right next to God's dentures. Not always pretty, but invariably some kinda fun." The Holy Soul have toured Australia, Europe and Asia, and have shared bills with Todd Rundgren, Mudhoney, The Scientists, Michael Rother & Dieter Moebius, Tav Falco and others.
Creative force and internationally acclaimed singer songwriter Lo Carmen has traversed the world with her distinctive genre defying supernatural sounds, recording and performing solo or with her rock’n’roll band The Great Beyond - Cec Condon (Mess Hall) Ken Gormly (Cruel Sea) Sam Worrad (Holy Soul/Kim Salmon). Mark Mordue (Boy on Fire’) recently described her sound as ‘if Bobbie Gentry had written songs for and fronted the Velvet Underground you’d have some idea of the vibe... stone cold classics’.
Claire Birchall’s continuing evolution as a songwriter / performer plus her commitment to DIY and sincerity over irony make her one of the most compelling and long-standing members of the Melbourne music community. From stunningly raw confessions to big-time rock to pop songs lavished with fuzzed out guitar, Casio and loops, Claire continues to find new ways to present her material to audiences. Her latest musical output, has seen her transition into the depths of darkwave synth pop with the successful release of her self-produced album 'Running In Slow Motion' (2020 It Records), with a follow up album set for a 2024 release.
Scott Mickelson is an artist/producer from San Francisco. His debut release Flickering was on the Grammy ballot for Best Folk Album and Best Roots Music Performance. His follow up full-length A Wondrous Life received great reviews in the US and abroad which led to his first European tour in 2019. He then produced the critically acclaimed Blanket The Homeless benefit compilation which included Grammy winner Fantastic Negrito.
In 2020, Mickelson released Drowning In An Inflatable Pool to rave reviews in the U.S. and Europe. The first single, “Jagged Tooth” was accompanied by the fantastic animated video. In 2022, his single/video “UNarmed American” premiered on Americana U.K. and he was invited to play three nights at The Mavericks Festival in England. His current single “Jump Off The Earth”, accompanied by a groundbreaking video which includes uniquely styled AI animation. His 5-piece band hails from Swindon, England. Mickelson continues to perform in the US, UK, and Europe. He is currently on his first tour of Australia and New Zealand playing with his regular partner in crime and accompanist on keys Jon Buckett.
