Palladio, Veronese and the Villa Barbaro at Maser
The contribution of the Veneto region to High Renaissance culture and its legacy should not be underestimated. Andrea Palladio’s comprehensive study of the principles of ancient Roman building made him perhaps the most emulated architect in history, and Paolo Veronese’s sophisticated understanding of colour influenced generations of European painters. These gifted men collaborated in the creation of one of the most significant projects of the period: a country villa for the Barbaro family. Harmony of colour, arcane symbolism and a sense of dialogue between architecture and landscape are seamlessly integrated in this ‘total’ work of art.

Palaces, Temples and Castles in Premodern Japan, Dr Mark Erdmann
Japanese architecture is known around the world for its simple, clean designs. Its premodern buildings entranced and inspired twentieth-century modernist architects, figures like Bruno Taut and Walter Gropius who saw in Japan’s premodern structures echoes of their own interest in functionality and limited ornamentation. This talk will trace the unique set of geographic, political, and cultural factors that gave rise to the Japanese aesthetic. Tracing the origins and fusion of Japanese palace architecture with imported Zen temple architecture in the 14th century to the discovery of castles in the 16th century, key structures such as the Golden and Silver Pavilions, Himeji Castle, and the Taian teahouse as well as key styles like shinden-zukuri and shoin-zukuri will be introduced.

Norway and the Lofoten Archipelago, Dr Mindy MacLeod
Many of you will know of Audhumla, the primeval cow who licked the frozen Norse world into shape. But what about the frankly bonkers battle cows of the Viking armies or the bewitched zombie bulls of the sagas? And while you may have seen depictions of the Norse goddess Freyja in her chariot drawn by cats, chances are you haven’t heard of the demonic black cats of the viking wizard Thorolf Sledgehammer. You might be familiar with the role of the wolf Fenrir in the Norse Apocalypse, but what about the doomed dogs who protect the family farms or the slavering hounds who guard the gates to hell?
Join Mindy as she describes some monstrous Viking beasts best avoided as well as some more appealing ones you may encounter on her upcoming Norwegian tour.
