ASA Fact|Snack 🤓— Upon the death of Gautama Buddha, sometime between 6th-4th c. BCE, one of his teeth is said to have been preserved in the Indian region of Kalinga on the east coast. During the first quarter of the 4th c. CE, the tooth was carried to Sri Lanka by Princess Hemamali, tucked inside tresses of her hair. During its time on Sri Lanka, Buddha’s tooth has been housed in various locations on the island due to conflicts, until it was placed in its present temple in Kandy during the 18th century. The Kandy royal palace and sacred tooth temple complex was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988

ASA Fact|Snack 🤓— At the start of the 20th century, local Scottish entrepreneur and patron of the arts, Miss Kate Cranston, set out to open a luxurious suite of Tea Rooms in the heart of Glasgow. She commissioned the design to Charles Rennie Mackintosh, who completed the stunning eatery in collaboration with his wife Margaret Macdonald for its opening in 1903. The design couple built other tea rooms for Cranston’s business, but today the iconic ‘Mackintosh at the Willow’ is the only one that survives. It was restored starting in 2014 by the Willow Tea Rooms Trust and today again serves as an elegant restaurant.

ASA Fact|Snack 🤓— The largest private contemporary art museum in the USA is the Glenstone Museum, located in Potomac, Maryland. Founded by the billionaire Rales family, the huge complex sits on 93 hectares and hosts around 1,300 artworks from around the world, all created after the 2nd World War. The collection is estimated to be worth about $1.5 billion USD. The museum is free to the public who request tickets in advance; however, in a gesture to support the use of public transportation, the Hales worked with the local county to have a bus stop established nearby — and visitors arriving by bus are permitted entry without the free advance tickets.

Our Story

Australians Studying Abroad pioneered international educational tourism from Australia. It runs public educational tours and university credit courses to over 40 countries. All ASA tours reflect a belief that learning is as much an act of imagination and experience as a garnering of information, based on the assumption that an intimate relationship exists between geography, history and culture. Our tours aim to give you unique insights into different cultural traditions by travelling to the places where each tradition evolved, and tracing how climate, geography, demography and politics interact to create specific types of art and culture. The physical experience of different landscapes, environments and communities that generate myriad colours, sounds and scents is the first step to understanding different cultures and enjoying these diverse places.
