Some originated as a result of significant historical events like the Albigensian Crusade (1209-1229) and the Hundred Years War (1337-1456). A new type of town, called bastides, was created and played a vital role in the consolidation of French royal power; astonishingly modern, innovative in their mode of operation, they are at the origin of our cities. These new towns were built on a land of enduring conflict. Both the French Capetians and Valois and the English Plantagenets built bastides, and numerous castles, permanently altering the landscapes. Other towns and villages have stood the test of time due to their strategic geographical location, allowing for easy defence or providing a perfect point for trade; the numerous troglodytic habitats found in the valleys of the Dordogne and Vézère have allowed populations to find shelter from prehistoric times. Pictured above is Monpazier, considered the best preserved and most typical example of a bastide in the region. At its centre, a thriving weekly farmers market keeps alive the traditions of its medieval past.

The winged lion of the Evangelist became the symbol of the city during the 12th century when the magnificent bronze statue was erected in the Piazzetta di San Marco. As the Venetian republic strengthened during the Middle Ages, the city gained territory in mainland Italy and along the shores of Adriatic. Venice repeatedly attacked the wealthy and powerful port of Zadar throughout the 12th century. On gaining control of the city, first through force and then simply purchasing it from King Ladislaus of Naples, the Venetians began to stamp their authority on the city and imposed harsh controls on Zadar’s trading capabilities. A reminder of Venetian rule is found on the Land Gate, designed by Venetian architect Michele Sanmicheli in 1543, where a mighty winged lion of St Mark, carved in high relief over the central arch, looks out over the waters of the Fosca Harbour (pictured above).

The Hindu Vijayanagara Empire rose to power in the 14th century and prospered through trade and conquest, attracting merchants and travellers. Innovative construction developed from the mingling of faiths and vernacular styles as well as influences brought about by the Empire’s substantial trade networks. The Vittala Temple Complex is arguably the most famous. Ruins of an ancient horse market flank the path to the temple, whose interior contains depictions of foreigners such as Persians trading horses. A massive stone chariot stands nearby. Inside, the temple boasts the famous "musical" pillars, two of which the British severed, revealing only hollow interiors, their quest to uncover the source of the pillars' sound unsuccessful. Another impressive structure is the Elephant Stable which was used to provide shelter for the royal elephants.

These are housed in the Upper Library, and its treasures include Thomas Wolsey’s lectionaries and his cardinal’s hat. Christ Church was founded by Wolsey in 1525 as Cardinal College on the site of St Frideswide's Priory and Canterbury College. Among Christ Church’s most famous figures is the Reverend Charles Lutwidge Dodgson (1832–1898), better known by his pen name, Lewis Carroll. A mathematics tutor, Dodgson befriended Henry Liddell, the new Dean, and his family in 1856. His friendship with the Liddell children led him to create one of the most famous and enduring children's stories, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, which celebrates its 160th anniversary this year. Christ Church Library – where the author even served as Sub-Librarian for a time – has long been one of the foremost archives of his works. The Library recently received an unparalleled donation from the Jon A. Lindseth Collection, one of the world’s most extensive private collections dedicated to Lewis Carroll.

It occupies a small peninsula between the Straits of Corfu and Lake Butrint, and is set in a spectacular location. Butrint, ancient Buthrotum, has been inhabited since antiquity; it has Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Venetian and Ottoman monuments and is in many ways a microcosm of Mediterranean history, representing in all its phases of development, the rise and fall of all the great empires that dominated the region. It is possible to see monuments that span over 2000 years, from the Hellenistic temples dating from fourth century BCE to remarkably well-preserved seating of its fourth-century CE theatre to the Ottoman defences from the nineteenth century.
