Anita, now a local girl, moved here from her home state of Tasmania. She has spent almost all her adult life raising her four, now adult, daughters and building a successful career in the health industry.
Ten years ago a group of her girlfriends got together to travel to celebrate a 'zero' birthday, as so many do. But instead of going on a cruise, or living it up in Italy, they chose to trek the Kokoda Track. Since that first adventure, Anita has been on many more. This year Anita hit another milestone birthday and with retirement just around the corner, come and listen to Anita's pearls of wisdom from her ten years of travel.
We also have Macarla, Manager of Toowoomba's Kathmandu Store, coming to talk about walking poles and hiking footwear. And, she's not coming empty-handed! Everyone who attends the evening will be given a Kathmandu discount voucher to use in the store over the next two weeks. Solo travel . . . it doesn’t have to be like this 🤔😉🤣.
Did you know that on our group tours, on average, 50% of the people are solo travellers.
It’s good to re-connect with old friends.
We had a catch-up Sunday lunch in Toowoomba today, for the group who travelled to Japan earlier this year.
It’s good to share travel stories over a bento box and bowl of ramen. It’s good to plan future trips too. There’s a big wonderful world to go and explore.
I wouldn't say I like to brag, but . . . we are so ahead of the pack. 🤫
You can expect to go off the beaten track when you come on a tour with us. And I mean 'off'.
On our last tour to England, there was an opportunity to visit the nuclear power plant ☢️- just one of those little options we like to throw in occasionally! 👩🔬
INTERESTINGLY 🤔, when I rang to arrange this, back in 2022/2023, they asked some security questions eg, where are you from? Why do you want to visit a nuclear facility? When I explained we were from Australia 🇦🇺, they said, 'Oh, we've just had some Australian politicians here looking around too.' 😱 I should have asked whether it was led by a very unattractive bald guy 😉
Possibly, they shouldn't have told us that 🤣

All good things must come to an end. Farewell Sails In The Desert, it’s time to head home.
And now for something completely different . . . Wintjiri Wiru. It’s the 1,200 drone light show telling the story of the local Mala People.
We could not take photos (I ‘borrowed’ this image off their website) but believe me, this is one experience worth travelling to see. One person in our group was moved to tears watching it.
Edit: a couple of people were moved to tears.

A few months ago we put out a call, only to be answered by the brave and adventurous.
Meet us at an undisclosed location in Brisbane, 10am, 12th of July and we’ll deliver you back to the same location by 8pm, 15th of July. You did not need a passport. You were given a packing list. And the cost was $2,095/person.
The only stipulation was you had to tell us if there was somewhere you would not want to go.

I don't say that often, and certainly not in such a public forum. So print this, it's very doubtful it will happen again!
In 2022 my son, Archie, was travelling to Europe, as many young people do in early adulthood.
However, he did something I could not believe he would do . . . he booked a Contiki Tour.
THIS WAS NOT HOW HE WAS RAISED!
My kids have been raised with the luxury of travel, but not to luxurious high-end places. More to places which educated them on life, and how different people live. Getting them out of their comfort zones.
They have eaten 'challenging food' whilst walking the Great Wall of China, they've played street cricket with the kids in India, they've got naked in the onsens of Japan, they've drunk fruit juices from the street vendors in Ethiopia, and lost their grandma in the tube station in London.
So when Archie told me he was going on a Contiki tour I was not impressed. Flitting through Europe on a bus, looking at each country from a window 5 metres off the group was not my idea of travel. But like many young adults, he did exactly as he wanted, and went anyway. What would I know anyway!!!
I have to admit, he had an absolute ball. He learned to be disciplined, the fear of oversleeping and missing the bus was real, so he was never late. The photos he took of amazing places I have never been to made me very jealous. And, most importantly, the friends he made will last a lifetime.
So the moral of the story is, if you have a young adult in your world who wants to go travelling, Contiki is not necessarily a bad option. Is it a great option? It depends on the circumstances, but it's one to consider.
The other point of the story is, that there's up to 25% of all kinds of tours for young people at the moment. So if you know someone under 35 who is looking to travel, send them to us. We will look after them.
We will find the right travel for them, it may be Contiki, or it could be G Adventures, or Intrepid or independent. We take pride in being completely independent and focus on getting the right travel for the person.
I dare not boast, yet it is with utmost confidence I declare that we are verily ahead of the trend.
Pray, let it be known that we were promenading the distinguished streets of Bath long before the Bridgerton spectacle graced its cobblestones.

One of the fun parts of an ICON trip is sticky-beaking at each others' rooms when we check into a hotel. We often stay in small boutique hotels where the rooms are not 'standard' so sometimes you get a great room with amazing views, and sometimes you're up in the atic! It doesn't really matter as we are not in our rooms much, but it's great when you are the one with bragging rights because you scored the best room. Here are four room views on recent trips. Our resting place for a couple of nights is the Le Relais de Chhlong, a lovely Colonial hotel built during the French colonial days. It still has plenty of old world charm.
Not to worry. We caught up and were re-united. No harm done.

Today we went on a rickshaw ride through Old Delhi markets - as you do! As I was video-ing I accidentally hit the slo-mo button and am so glad I did. It gives you a great view of everyday Old Delhi, nothing to attract tourists. Just life as it is, everyday. To give you the back story our rickshaw driver did start a traffic jam by doing a U turn in the middle of the traffic. Apart from that it all went well. Come along for the ride. Enjoy!
