Cleveland Lodge 74 Townsville

This Lodge was opened on September 28th 1893 by the late D.G. Sec., Wor. John Fenwick, assisted by the D.G. Treas. J.J. Clark, who came from Brisbane for the purpose. There was a very large number of visitors present – there being 31 P.M.’s on the Dais. The Lodge opened with 18 members, his Honour Wor. Justice Chubb being the first Master.

The members steadily increased until we reached 50 on the Roll, and at that number we have been almost stationary for some years past. This is accounted for by the members who leave us for other places – most of them on transfer to better appointments ; and while a large number of members are in the Government Service, in banks, and in insurance offices, this loss of members is always to be expected, During the last few years we have each lost one of our Wardens, generally the S. W., and just when he would have been elected as W. M.

Of the eighteen foundation members nine are still members of the Lodge, while eight others have left the district. We are proud of being the first Lodge in Queensland to establish scholarships, the first being in 1895, and since that time we have always had one or more scholarships, last year the number being 5, and we have expended nearly 250 pounds on this object. Wor. Robt. Abaham was appointed Secretary at the foundation of the Lodge in 1893 and continued in the position for ten years until 1903. At the installation in 1904, after a lapse of one year he again became Secretary; and still continues in that office, this being his fifteenth year of service. The same Brother also acts as Dir. Of Cer. At the annual installation. He received D.G.L. honours as P.D.S.G.D. in 1896, and received rank of P.D.S.G.W. as a Jubilee honour this year.

This Lodge possesses one fourth share in the ownership of the Masonic Hall in conjunction with 3 other Lodges.
