My first column of '25, this my 30th year of scribbling fishy tales for the Townsville Bulletin
Might 2025 be a fish filled and joyous one for all anglers.
2024 finished beautifully for many with full iceboxes and plenty of yarns to carry into the new year, Simon Ormes, friends and family hitting the reef, my eldest Coen Riddle and his girl testing casts in both fresh and saltwater.
Meanwhile while others fared equally well when fishing favourite inshore and landbased hotspots.
This weekend looks like a blowout though for reef and offshore anglers yet luckily, local creeks and rivers are fishing well.

Pre-rain captures within local inshore waters were mostly mixed hauls of mackerel - greys and doggie macks with an occasional Spanish , tuna - longtail and macs, queenfish and GT's of all sizes.
Most were caught jigging and high-speed spinning while others were snagged on the troll.

Few catches were more exciting though, than those made on Wednesday by charter regulars Rachel and Ash - as reported in my weekly Townsville Bulletin fishing column. Was a hoot!!

Remember guys, if it's flooded forget it... or fish it 🎣, but only for barra within the Ross River weirs during the current closed season. SIP or Stocked Impoundment Permit required by anglers 18 and over.

Been a couple of doubting Thomas' re my boy's simultaneous double doggie mackerel catch on the one lure.

They claim it was nothing more than a photoshop dupe.
Get this into you fellas 😉

Those that know how voracious mackerel can be will understand how these things might happen...

The fish, both bait and predatory species, didn't much like the warmer surface water temps today and were content to sit a little deeper.
Still, greys, doggies and GT again fell for the metal jigs

It's typical summer fare in Cleveland Bay and shipping channel depths - doggies, grey macks and GTs lining up to eat the shiniest metal jigs.
John and son Aiden might have been happy they'd snared the smaller GTs this morning and not the monster that chased down a grey mackerel in the bowels of the channel.

Well fished gentlemen 👌

Tough day all round with a heavy freshwater influence within inshore waters pushing us wider to find fish that would play.

Idea was to stretch 9-yr-old Ollie's arms a bit and after warming up on a bunch of doggie mackerel, the young man mastered new skills (with a little help from dad) when hooking these fine queenfish and a solid GT.

Well fished Ollie 💪

It matters not whether you're a wide-eyed youngster or a well-seasoned angler like my dear mate and mentor Keith 'Doc' Harveyson who recently celebrated 95 laps around the sun.

A sea breeze in your face, a lungful of salt air and a good dose of vitamin D is great for the soul.

Been a while between drinks, yet the joy on Doc's face, when leaving behind harbour waters this morning, reminds me of just how lucky I am to share time on the water with some truly wonderful people.

Bit lumpier than forecast earlier this morning but conditions eased fairly quickly following another breathtaking sunrise.
Shelved plans to run to Rattlesnake and instead wandered around the shipping channel and waters wide of Picnic Bay.
You just know doggie mackerel are hungry when they won't leave a bare hook swinging, Coen nailing 2 fish simultaneously on the one lure.
Grey mackerel occasionally beat a doggie to the jigs as did mac tuna along with a wayward GT that tested my eldest boy's knots. Well fished mate 👌
Rain and storms threaten charters during the next few days... ⛈

Grey mackerel spread far and wide this morning but no big numbers in any one particular spot, fish at Bay Rock, West Point, Middle Reef and the shipping channel.
Usual bycatch included doggies, cod, golden trevs and big bad ass cudas...

The headline might not be quite right, but Marcus McIver catches a fine mackerel, as does Keanah Jarvis and Jaxson Crane. Big GT keeps Bear Robinson busy and plenty of other info in my weekly Townsville Bulletin fishing column.

Was a day for it this morning 🌦🌧⛈

All Daniel wanted was a GT and he reckons this one will do just fine... bucket list fish done good and proper ✅

We spoke about the GT vs Kingfish debate and having now caught good models of both species, the New South Welshman gives the nod to the trevally 💪👌

Grubs had left their ugly mark at the South Townsville Boating and Recreational Park ramp overnight, or early this morning. 🤬
Some poor fella coming back to a sh*t show...
Getting as risky as the Stoney Creek ramp doing an overnighter or pre-dawn launch. 😔

Cleveland Bay and Magnetic Island a sportsfisher's paradise.
Cooper with a thumping golden trevally, Blake a longtail or northern bluefin tuna and Warren's catch - a 'pocket rocket' mac tuna.
