The headline might not be quite right, but Marcus McIver catches a fine mackerel, as does Keanah Jarvis and Jaxson Crane. Big GT keeps Bear Robinson busy and plenty of other info in my weekly Townsville Bulletin fishing column.

Was a day for it this morning 🌦🌧⛈

All Daniel wanted was a GT and he reckons this one will do just fine... bucket list fish done good and proper ✅

We spoke about the GT vs Kingfish debate and having now caught good models of both species, the New South Welshman gives the nod to the trevally 💪👌

Wonderful to have you both on board Daniel and Taylor

This wet and wild Friday, my weekly fishing scribbles in the Townsville Bulletin.
Should anyone get out and find clean enough water, mackerel and tuna beckon while in the creeks, jacks are hot and barras to be left alone.
Hoping everyone is treated to a fantastic weekend 🎣

Grubs had left their ugly mark at the South Townsville Boating and Recreational Park ramp overnight, or early this morning. 🤬

Getting as risky as the Stoney Creek ramp doing an overnighter or pre-dawn launch. 😔
Coppers on the scene shortly after these pics were taken.

Cleveland Bay and Magnetic Island a sportsfisher's paradise.
Cooper with a thumping golden trevally, Blake a longtail or northern bluefin tuna and Warren's catch - a 'pocket rocket' mac tuna.
That and more in my weekly Townsville Bulletin fishing column.
Wishing everyone a fantastic weekend 🍻

There's a whole bunch of these 'pocket rockets' in the bay right now and they're a heap of fun on light gear.
On the plate they generally rate poorly, but as a cut bait for demersal or bottom species like reds, trout, lippers, javelin and grassies, they're hard to beat...
Cooper claimed big golden trevally, cobia and grey mackerel today and was happy to spear this mac tuna back into the water after a couple of pics.
Well fished young man 👌

You'll find the yarn behind 14-year-old Blake's awesome GT catch in today's Townsville Bulletin fishing column. Also, grey mackerel are biting, season last barra catches and more.

Hoping everyone has a fish-filled and wonderful weekend 🎣

Doesn't matter how big you are down there, it seems that there's always something bigger that might see you as nothing more than a big snack...
This fat estuary cod was grabbed by something else while being brought to the boat, probably a larger cod, or maybe a groper.

It was taken for a short boat ride and released, but no guarantee that it didn't go back to where we found it and straight down the jaws of whatever had a taste for it.

Cruel world down there 😳

Well fished Trent 🎣👌

Been a reasonably good week on the water, a few pics hereabouts, but going to start blowing a bit from tomorrow...

But still, estuary anglers happy with plenty of options remaining for the last weekend of barra season 2024.

Best of luck everyone 🤞

When looking at someone's pics of a day out on the water, it might sometimes seem as though the fish just jump into the boat.

Happy faces hereabouts could possibly suggest exactly that but, to be honest, it was reasonably tough out there today.

Nonetheless, Adam, wife Carma and daughter Jess were each pleased with their largest fish to date.

Well fished guys 💪🎣

How spectacular is this juvenile golden trevally?

Will grow up to be more than the handful it is here 👌

Joe said I could use this pic... but only if I disguised the location a bit before posting on social media - something he's not a fan of.
You see, Joe wants to come back and fish Townsville again and just like his own backyard in SEQ, he wants to protect easily accessible spots as best he can.
For the record, a soft vibe for the win and the fingermark, registering better than 90cm, was released - something we don't do in waters deeper than 8-10m. Now there's a hint! 😳
The fingermark swam away okay, but we're always doubtful about the chances of these bigger fish. They never come easy, usually spent and probably shark tucker when released 😞

Super fishing Joe 😎

The pain threshold of a fish must be incredible, and obviously, the pain not as we humans know it 🤔

This golden trevally fought every bit as hard as any 100% healthy specimen, in spite of a relatively recent nasty wound that continued to weep after capture.

Can notice some tissue around the wound having already died.

Difficult to be certain what caused this trauma, but teeth marks apparent at back end of the injury perhaps indicate shark although the fish was clean as a whistle on the reverse flank.

This fish was released to go a second round with whatever might have wanted to eat it...

It's not often my weekly Townsville Bulletin fishing column, each Friday, earns a front-page pointer... 🤔

Magnetic Island waters alive with big fish, reef fish on the menu following closure, mackerel still no take and new lifejacket regs begin December 1st.

Hope everyone's weekend is a fish-filled and safe one 😎
