Consultation opens today to change the name of Queensland's world-famous Fraser Island to K’gari (pronounced ‘GUR-rie’ or ‘Gurri’).

In 2021, the Fraser Island World Heritage Area was changed to K’gari (Fraser Island) World Heritage Area to acknowledge the Butchulla Peoples’ traditional name for the island.

The name K’gari comes from the creation story of the island, which has been passed down orally for generations between the traditional owners of the surrounding land and waters, the Butchulla People.

K’gari is the name of the white spirit that was sent down from the sky by the god Beeral, to help his messenger Yindingie make the land and seas that are home to the Butchulla People.

🐠CHAMPAGNE POOLS 🐠

Champagne pools is a swimming spot right on the edge of the ocean and is known for its pools of bubbling water caused by the waves crashing over the volcanic rocks, you will most likely have the experience of swimming with some of these little fish that get caught in these pools.
