Enjoying the wet tropics of Eungella with Queensland National Parks Rangers facilitating a chainsaw level 2 course.

Great to work with the guys that we have previously trained in level 1 and it was interesting to see their advanced competency levels compared to others that have not been trained as comprehensively over a two day course by VET Centre Qld.

'Let’s get the word ‘enteric’ into the methane discussion'
by David Mason-Jones

" Enteric methane is the type of methane produced in animals by natural and organic processes. Enteric methane is an organic process, solar powered, has existed for as long as grazing animals have existed, widespread in animal and insect life forms. Each methane molecule contains one atom of carbon and, when the methane molecule is returned to the atmosphere after the cow belches, it reverts to what it was at the start point of the cycle – a carbon atom in a carbon dioxide molecule. Enteric methane is part of a balanced cycle in the atmosphere in which there is no new carbon added to atmosphere at all – not one atom from any belch of any cow.

So, what’s not to like about enteric methane? Nothing at all. The atmospheric carbon cycle involving methane is both a mass balance and an energy balance. It simply cannot be added to any atmospheric heating model because it is self-completing and self-balancing.

‘Enteric’ methane can be distinguished from another source of methane often referred to as ‘Fugitive’ methane. Fugitive methane is methane that does not come directly from organic digestive processes of ruminant animals. Fugitive methane comes from sources such as coal seams in the process of coal mining or from gas escaped from the mining of natural gas deposits. For all intents and purposes with regard to our current age, the carbon in this fugitive methane can be regarded as new carbon to the atmosphere – at least ‘new’ with regard to the vast passage of millennia since the coal seam or natural gas was formed below the Earth’s surface.

I encourage livestock owners, and others interested in understanding the truth about sources and destinations of gases in the environment, to always insert the word ‘enteric’ when the issue of methane comes up. This will get the discussion onto a more scientific basis than just assuming that all methane is the same. It will help us, and others, get the facts right. "

We media consumers hear the constant messaging that methane from our cattle is a major new source of a ‘dangerous’ global warming gas – methane. We hear this day after day and the problem is it’s becoming worse, more persistent.

Another great week of training people in Brisbane, down on Sunday for a 5.30am start on Monday for a two day ACDC chemical course.

Great opportunity to train and work with a great bunch of trainees from heritagetreecare
completing their certificate III in Arboriculture.

It is awesome to see a business growing and ensuring that their staff are professionally trained and not just put through a tick and flick certification.
