Itโ€™s a pity that the Walhalla Vinter Ljusfest came to an end in 2017 as it was really positive for the town and spectacular at the same time. So many excellent and exciting photos producedโ€ฆand this was all in the period prior to mobile phone coverage in Walhalla so imagine what would be possible today.

While it was sad and a blow to the town that this event came to an end, one legacy does continue, the Winter Night Trains run by the Walhalla Goldfields Railway. The first of the night trains operate tomorrow at 6pm and 8pm. Pre booking is required. They will be running every Saturday night during August so make sure you donโ€™t miss out.

You can book via www.visitwalhalla.com

The photo is from the Ljusfest opening night in 2012.

๐Ÿ˜กvery disappointing

These are not the kind of doughnuts we want ๐Ÿ˜ค
Our team was really disappointed to discover that our Moondarra picnic ground was vandalised last week.
Not only does this create a muddy mess that looks awful, but it also promotes erosion.
Help us protect this great asset for our community.
If you've seen anything suspicious in the area, call us on 1800 050 500 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. Thank you!

Cool sun-filled days make for the ideal hiking conditions ๐Ÿž๏ธ

But before you head out on your next adventure in Victoriaโ€™s great outdoors itโ€™s important to take steps to stay safe:

- Check the weather forecast
- Let your friends and family know where youโ€™re going and what your plan is
- Check the latest conditions and park closures via Parks Victoria
- Be sure you have the right kit - wear closed-toe shoes, a hat and take plenty of water
- Download the VicEmergency app and set up watch zones for the areas you are planning to visit.

When hiking you should:
- Look out for emergency markers - they have a unique code that pinpoints your location if you call 000
- Always stay on the marked trails. Walking off track damages sensitive vegetation, can disturb Aboriginal cultural heritage artefacts, compacts the ground and can spread plant diseases
- Pace yourself โ€“ don't overdo it, know your limits and take regular breaks.

Congratulations to the Walhalla Goldfields Railway on their 30th Anniversary of operations today. From little things, big things grow.

When first launched 30 years ago, there was only a short length of track within the Thomson yard. Progressively over the next 8 years the track was extended to reach Walhalla in 2002.

You can find the link to book tickets and more information about the railway and other attractions at: www.visitwalhalla.com

Big news for the valuable heritage of Walhalla.

BLACKBERRY GAINS HERITAGE PROTECTION IN WALHALLA.

All praise and protection for the humble blackberry with new regulations.

In a new law that come into place today, the ubiquitous Blackberry has been delisted as noxious w**d and afforded protection in heritage areas such as Walhalla for its role in the cultural and agricultural significance to the nation during the period 1870 to 1900.

The Department of Indigenous Culture, Heritage, Environmental and Architectural Design has declared that the blackberry is now protected and it need to be treated with respect and can no longer be poisoned or removed without a permit in specified gold era heritage areas such as Walhalla.

A spokesperson for the department stated: โ€œWhile some people see blackberries as a nuisance and something that needs to be eradicated, we believe that by ensuring protection in key areas of the state, we can ensure that the cultural past is preserved. Walhalla has some excellent examples of blackberries that have been in place for nearly 150 years that need preservation and protection to ensure that they continue to grow and be part of the heritage environment that we love and enjoy.โ€

โ€œThey are not only visually stunning in the size and volume, they are also an important food source and make lovely jam. Importantly, this protection does not extend to the early 21st century quasi smart phone of the same name.โ€ the spokesperson added.

A grant funding program is available to community groups and landholders to allow for the protection and preservation of Walhallaโ€™s blackberries. Interested people can apply at:

Happy Easter Everyone!
This is where we hope our vehicles remain today and you can help! If youโ€™re camping this long weekend and your packing up for the drive home, please ensure your campfire is fully extinguished with water and cool to the touch before you head off!

28/03/2024

Are you heading away camping this long weekend? Make sure you do so safely.

๐Ÿ•๏ธ๐ŸŒ™ Choose camping sites that are under a clear sky. Never camp under trees or branches.

๐Ÿ“ฑ๐Ÿ“ป Set up a watch zone around your destination on the VicEmergency app. Take a radio if youโ€™re going to an area without reception so you can tune into local emergency broadcasters.

๐Ÿž๏ธ๐Ÿ”ฅ Not all parks or campgrounds allow campfires โ€“ check restrictions at www.parks.vic.gov.au.

๐Ÿ’ง If you do light a campfire, never leave it unattended. And remember to extinguish it completely with water - if itโ€™s cool to touch, itโ€™s safe to leave.

Enjoy the weekend if you have it off. Thanks to those who are continuing to volunteer or work.

28/03/2024

Donโ€™t let smoke get in your eyes over Easterโ€ฆand donโ€™t worry! Planned burns are underway to ensure the long term fire safety of our area around Walhalla.

As FFMV Planned burns continueโ€ฆ please keep up to date on https://plannedburns.ffm.vic.gov.au/search-results
