Ned Kelly or Bread Kelly? 😂 The Ned Kelly Rail Trail of 1879 sites are all over the town of Jerilderie...... but this bread tin statue of Ned outside the local bakery sure is picture worthy!!!

Discover more of the Kelly gang's visit to Jerilderie through the self-guided Ned Kelly Raid Trail. They robbed more than 2,000 pounds from the Bank of New South Wales, held quite a few residents hostage, and locked the police in their own cell so it’s no wonder Jerilderie is home to more Kelly sites than anywhere else!

The free access period to our Ned Kelly Discovery Hub interpretation area on the ground floor is finishing on Monday, 25 March 2024.

After this date, access to this area will cost $5 adults, $3 pension/concession and school aged children are free.

Take a moment to relax with a springtime walk around Lake Sambell.

Lake Sambell is a short stroll from the centre of Beechworth and is a picturesque recreation reserve and popular venue for water and non-powered boating activities.
The track around the lake is a complete circuit, rated at Grade 3 level, and takes around 40 minutes to complete.

Grab a friend and a coffee from one of Beechworth's great cafés and stretch those legs. 🍃

Ned Kelly's Death Mask
Convicted at Melbourne on 29 October 1880 for murder, Ned Kelly was a well-known bushranger who captured the public’s imagination. His death mask was created after his ex*****on at the Old Melbourne Gaol on 11 November 1880. He was aged 25.

After the ex*****on, Kelly’s body remained suspended for 30 minutes as required by law to ensure he was dead. It was then placed on a handcart and wheeled out the door, across the yard and into the dead-house. There the ex*****on mask was removed to reveal that Kelly’s features had not been disfigured. He had died with a placid expression and his eyes remained bright. Waxworks proprietor Maximilian Kreitmayer shaved the head and prepared a wax mould for a death mask.

The mask was cast using plaster and many copies were made, including one that Kreitmayer displayed in his Wax Museum on Bourke Street. Death masks were made in the name of science – as well as to inspire fear in would-be criminals. The use of the now discredited science of phrenology was an attempt to understand criminality. Phrenology was a method of reading the shape of the scull and the bumps on the cranium. Each bump, lump and indentation corresponded to a characteristic that built a picture of the individual’s personality.

Another fantastic location along the The Official Ned Kelly Touring Route

Explore Jerilderie – you might be surprised to learn it’s just 326 kilometres from Melbourne on the Newell Highway 🚗

Start off at Horgan Walk and see part of Billabong Creek’s 320-kilometre length as it passes through Jerilderie. You can also see the line of the creek on the wings of the Wedge-tailed Eagle Mural – find it on the side of the Jerilderie Bakery… And pop in for a pie or something sweet after you take a look, too.

Walk the same streets Ned Kelly’s gang once did as you soak up the history of this township. The self-guided Ned Kelly Raid Trail is part of The Official Ned Kelly Touring Route and includes 16 sites associated with the gang’s audacious raid in 1879. Along the way, detour for a wander around peaceful Lake Jerilderie.

In February 1879, the Kelly Gang approached the small town of Jerilderie in New South Wales. They intended to rob the Jerilderie branch of the Bank of New South Wales, but the leader of the gang, Edward ‘Ned’ Kelly, had a second purpose for visiting the town.

We all know and love the amazing Woolshed Falls, just out of Beechworth. 🌊🌲 With Ned Kelly and his gang having strong links to both Beechworth and the Woolshed Valley, maybe they too enjoyed these falls as much as we all do now? 🤠🏞️
