Today National Threatened Species Day is commemorated to raise awareness of native plants, animals and ecosystems that are at risk of extinction in Australia.
It’s scary to think that in New South Wales alone there are close to 1,000 plants and animals, just like the Glossy Black Cockatoo (pictured) that are at risk of extinction.
Sadly today the Glossy Black Cockatoo (also known as ‘Glossies’) is listed as vulnerable under the Biodiversity Conservation Act 2016 (NSW) and is at risk of further population decline after losing large areas of feeding habitat during the Black Summer bushfires of 2019–20. Scientists believe that the decline in numbers of Glossies may be due to a number of factors including the clearing of she-oak trees (Allocasuarina and Casuarina) which they feed almost exclusively on and the loss of mature eucalypts for nest hollows.
Although National Threatened Species Day focuses on raising awareness of native flora, fauna and ecosystems at risk of extinction, it also is a day to reflect on how we can protect species like Glossies, now and into the future.
This weekend we’ll be joining Birdlife Australia and the Great Glossy Conservancy, to take part in the Great Glossy Count 2024. The Count takes place across the distribution of the South-eastern Glossy Black-Cockatoo (south-eastern Queensland, eastern NSW, the ACT and eastern Victoria).
What’s even more exciting is that we’ll be joined by our community of Wolgan Valley for the Great Glossy Count 2024, where we will be contributing to wildlife conservation through citizen science. We’ll be exploring selected survey sites here in the valley and collecting data on Glossies and their feeding habitat. We can’t wait!
If you would like to join the Great Glossy Count Count 2024 where you live or learn more about Glossies check out https://birdlife.org.au/news/join-us-in-the-great-glossy-count/

🐸 On this final day of FrogID Week, and whilst exploring the many frog species that we have here in the Greater Blue Mountains World Heritage Area, we stumbled upon the fascinating Southern Stuttering Frog!
These unique amphibians are known for their distinctive clucking calls during the breeding season. 🎶 Found in the cool, clear mountain streams of southeastern Australia including here in the Wollemi and Gardens of Stone region, these frogs live most of their life in deep leaf litter on the forest floor and lay their eggs on rock shelves or shallow riffles in small streams, showcasing their incredible adaptation to their lush forested habitats. 🌳
Sadly, the Southern Stuttering Frog is listed as endangered here in NSW due to the amphibian chytrid fungus and other threats including habitat loss, and changes to water flow and water quality.
Let’s work together to preserve the rich biodiversity of this World Heritage Area and ensure the survival of amazing species like the Southern Stuttering Frog! 🌏🌿

Explore the enchanting world of the incredible Giant Burrowing Frog in the Greater Blue Mountains World Heritage Area! 🐸🌿 These fascinating creatures, among the largest in Australia, boast unique burrowing habits and a distinctive “bonk” call. With a rough, camouflaged exterior, they thrive in the lush surroundings of the Greater Blue Mountains including here in the Wollemi and Gardens of Stone region. Did you know that they can live for over 10 years? 🕰️ Locally GBF’s breeding habitat is in the threatened montane peatlands and hanging swamps of Newnes Plateau. Sadly, just like these peatlands and hangings swamps, these larger than life characters are under threat of extinction due to land clearing, climate change, and recreational activity and longwall mining disturbances to their breeding habitat.
Join us this FrogID Week as we celebrate the Giant Burrowing Frog and highlight the importance of conserving Australia’s 240+ frog species for biodiversity and ecosystem health! 🌏🌳

Discover one of Australia's loudest frogs - the male Robust Bleating Tree Frog (Litoria dentata), a native of eastern Australia. Their loud and distinctive cicada-like "bleat" call fills the air following rain in our regions sub-tropical rainforests (yes, we have them), wetlands, and woodlands. These frogs, known for their adaptability, thrive in a range of environments, underscoring the need to conserve biodiversity in both wild and urban settings.
Have you heard these little guys? Did you know you can record frog calls with the Australian Museum FrogID app to help us understand and conserve frogs.
Download the free FrogID app and record frog calls as often as you can during FrogID Week from 3-12 November 2023.

Happy National Bird Week and a massive woohoo for the start of the best thing since sliced bread, the Aussie Bird Count!
We can’t believe it’s been 10 years since the Aussie Bird Count started and we thought the best way to celebrate is by featuring this beautiful little native bird species - the Spotted Pardolate.
The Spotted Pardalote is a small bird that is seen most often high in the eucalypt canopy, and is more often heard by its characteristic call that sounds a little like ‘sleep-baby’.
It’s one of only a small number of native bird species that use nest tunnels. The nest is an enlarged, lined chamber at the end of narrow tunnel, excavated in an earth bank. Sometimes they nest in tree hollows and occasionally in artificial structures. Both parents share nest-building (just like what this Spotted Pardolate is doing), incubation of the eggs and feeding of the young when they hatch.
Have you heard or seen these little guys flying around your neck of the woods?

It’s World Rivers Day!
To celebrate we thought we’d share with you one of our favourite local rivers - Wolgan River. This beautiful river flows into the iconic wild river - the Colo River. The Colo River and its tributaries; including the Wolgan catchment, is one of only a few rivers in NSW that are declared wild rivers. Wild rivers are rivers that are in near-pristine condition in terms of animal and plant life and water flow, and are free of the unnatural rates of siltation or bank erosion that affect many of Australia’s waterways.

Our first Lithgow Business & Lifestyle Expo done and dusted. A big thank you to the team at Lithgow District Chamber of Commerce for organising this great event and for allowing us to be part of what we hope will be an annual event. We also can’t forget the beautiful Jayne Vought from Wolgan Valley Weddings for agreeing to share an exhibit space with us. We had a blast!
What can we say, these last five months for our business and community of Wolgan Valley have been incredibly difficult and stressful. We hope this film from our local community group the Wolgan Valley Association in partnership with Australian filmmaker Wolgan Valley’s Matt Bird will give a bit of insight into what we’ve been experiencing and why we haven’t been able to operate or welcome visitors back to the valley.
If you love Wolgan Valley just as much as we do and are keen to get back down into the valley please share and get behind the WVA’s #WolganRdForEveryone campaign.
