These are Images of Aruba's precious wildlife, fascinating fauna and landscapes, in order to help raising awareness about Aruba's sensitive environment. Aruba is known for its beautiful powder fine white beaches, calm clear water, beautiful sunny weather (almost) every day and spectacular sunsets. Consequently the image many people have of Aruba -either if they visited Aruba or not- are the blue w

aters, the luxurious shopping centers, fine restaurants and swinging nightlife. This was exactly the same image I had when I moved to Aruba in the mid 90’s. But shortly after my arrival I discovered Aruba is more than this; one of its relatively unknown features is its diversity in wildlife both on land and in the water, magnificent fauna, stunning landscapes and peerless moonrises. Around 2012, inspired by others, I started to take pictures of those moments that most of us do not get to see when in Aruba. No images of the beaches, the malls, the casino’s but photos taken in the middle of nature. Birds have a special attraction on me, so most of my pictures feature these beautiful creatures. Hope you enjoy them.

The Gray Kingbird, locally known as Pimpiri, generally captures flying insects mid-air from a high perch, often a branch or power line. In our wetlands I frequently see these flycatchers taking insects from the water surface.
Not often you see them catching larger lizards, supposedly only when they have hatchlings.
This Aruba Whiptail lizard was killed by repeated blows on a branch before feeding it to its offspring.

The Boss.

The Venezuelan Troupial is the largest and most unusual member in the oriole family. Separate from being larger (and some other physical features): to further remove this oriole from the category of standard, it does not build a hanging nest but instead it uses an old nest from another species of bird. Also it is known to pirate nests: it may drive away the rightful owner of the nest so that the troupial can take it over as its own. As if not enough suffering, it may eat the chicks a/o eggs of the other bird first.

Ospreys are common fall migrants to Aruba. Some winter here while most continue to South America. Their diet consists mainly of live fish in a wide variety of species. I always wonder why they spend all that energy flying from continent to continent since they can find fish all around Aruba.

Persistence paid off.

Even though I have taken thousands of pictures of hummingbirds, still I cannot ignore them. Every time I see one I need to take a photo, again. Once in a while they reward me for this persistence.

White-tailed Hawk

During the past decades Aruba lost several bird species, others have such a decline in population that we may fear for local extinction.
Amongst others the Saffron Finch and Rufous-collared Sparrow I haven't seen in years. The Yellow Oriole, Brown-throated Parakeet, Burrowing Owl and Crested Bobwhite are some the species that do have a serious decline in population. These are all birds. I don't know about the status of other flora and fauna, on land or in the sea.
Habitat loss, land fragmentation, use of pesticides, invasive species, over-development, brood parasites and pollution are the main reasons for the disappearance of species from our land- and seascapes.
This is the White-tailed Hawk, locally known as Partawela. It was on the list to be declared extirpated from Aruba.
During the past years it frequently shows up again, a huge surprise for us.

“The Origin of Species”

A cool thing about birds is that they are not only the descendants of dinosaurs, they ARE dinosaurs.
About 65 million years ago a massive extinction event wiped out all but one group of small, feathered dinosaurs. These dinosaurs eventually developed over time into what we now call birds. (religious fundamentalistic views set aside)
This Groove-billed Ani family may convince you that the findings of scientists are correct.

Black Noddy.

Different from other terns that go to deeper waters, I see the Black Noddy often foraging near the coastline in low tides, hunting for small fish and larvae.
These terns are currently nesting on Aruba and need to feed their offspring.

Destination Mismanagement

Owls do not typically eat their own babies. Owls are known to be devoted parents that care for their young by providing them with food and protection. However, there are rare instances in nature where owls may exhibit cannibalistic behavior, especially if food is scarce or if the parents are stressed or disturbed. This is a Shoco parent which is eating its own family. I think I have a clue why this Burrowing Owl decided to do so: Over-development, land fragmentation, adventure & over-tourism, uncontrolled use of pesticides etc, etc. ...all to be summarized in 2 words: "Destination Mismanagement"

It's the season.

Least Grebes have again been successful breeding in pond (actually an old gravel excavation pit) on Aruba. While the young stay safe and warm on the back of one of the parents, the other parent feeds them.
