Absheron is truly unique for its mud volcanoes. There are 300 in Azerbaijan or 30 percent of the world’s total. Post-apocalyptic is the only way to describe the landscape in Gobustan National Park. Situated just 67km south of Baku (or an hour’s drive) along the Caspian coast, Gobustan (Qobustan) is all rock and oozing mud, scars, and craters. A beautiful landscape, as if you are on the planet Mars (scientists have drawn an analogy and the surface in the area of Gobustan is very similar to the surface of the planet Mars) and the constant mud gurgling creates a feeling of the unearthly surface.

Philharmonia Garden sometimes called Gubernator's or Governor's Park, is a park in Baku, next to the Baku fortress. The park was established at the beginning of 1830; ship captains coming from Iran were asked to bring a sack of soil to add to it. It was extended in the 1860s and 1870s to 4.6 hectares (11 acres) and was originally called Mixaylov bağı (Mikhaelovsky Garden) after the governor. The park was renovated in the 1970s and then further renovated beginning in 2007 on orders of President Ilham Aliyev. An old-fashioned fountain designed by the French company Inter Art has been added.

The Maiden Tower is a Baku landmark, a much loved symbol of the city and of Azerbaijan. It looms dark and enigmatic, looking out to sea from the southern edge of Baku´s old, walled city, the Icheri Sheher. The origins of the tower are shrouded in mystery - no-one knows for certain when it was built or what it was built for or even how it acquired its name Maiden Tower (Qiz qalasi). The walls of the tower are five metres thick at its foundation, but narrow to about 4.5 metres at the top. This indicates that the lower and upper parts of the tower were built at the same time, not at different times as some scholars assert. The secret of the survival of the Maiden Tower lies in this solid foundation.

Azerbaijan Carpet Museum was established in 1967. At the time of establishment, it was the only museum that was dedicated to the art of carpet weaving. The main purpose of the creation of the museum was to store, research, and demonstrate unique examples of carpet weaving art, which are Azerbaijan’s national heritage. As a result, numerous research expeditions in different regions of Azerbaijan enriched museum funds with items of the material culture of the country. Here, were collected the Azerbaijani carpets, carpet items, and other kinds of crafts. The museum vault houses seven collections: Pile Carpets; Flat-woven Carpets; Carpet Products; Artistic Metalwork; Ceramics, Glass, Wood, Paper; Textile, Costume, Embroidery; and Jewelry. The museum stores curiosities related to the Bronze Age, the Ancient Period, and the early Middle Ages, while the greater part of the collection dates back to the 17th to 20th centuries.
Today, the Azerbaijan Carpet Museum, which is located in one of the country’s most modern buildings, not only stores a rich collection of artifacts and carpets, but also operates as the site for the comprehensive research of traditional carpet weaving art and its popularization within world culture.

It is no coincidence that Azerbaijan is called the "Land of Fire": oil spilling onto the surface, Baku sparkling in the night with illumination, frightening flames that covered the surface of the earth for tens of meters and this is not an exaggeration. There is Mount Yanardag the name of which literally translates as “burning mountain”.
Yanardag is one of the most amazing natural sights of the Absheron Peninsula. It is a mountainside engulfed in flames, which cannot be extinguished either by rain or covered with sand, burning for several millennia. The frightening and at the same time bewitching fiery landscape is actually explained very simply: natural gas is released from the upper layers of the soil, which turns into a flame when it comes into contact with oxygen.

Flame Towers is located on a hill overlooking the Caspian Sea and Baku’s old city center. Though similar in appearance, each tower was designed to serve a specific function. The tallest of the three structures—a 39-story residential tower—sits to the south and accommodates 130 luxury apartments. A 36-story hotel building on the northern corner of the site provides stunning views from 318 guestrooms. An office tower on the west of the site provides more than 350,000 square feet of flexible, Class A commercial office space. At night, LED lights on the exterior of the buildings create a flickering effect that enhances the “flame” concept.

The Museum is in harmony with the rest of the Center. The Museum describes the history of Azerbaijan and the different stages of Heydar Aliyev’s life and work. There is a car museum exhibition on the ground floor of the museum, these cars were used by Heydar Aliyev in different periods of his rule. The four Tuesdays in the Novruz symbolize the four elements called Su Chershenbesi (Water Tuesday), Od Chershenbesi (Fire Tuesday), Yel Chershenbesi (Wind Tuesday), and Torpag or Akhir Chershenbe (Earth or Last Tuesday). Each four Tuesdays is celebrated differently. On all four Tuesdays and the eve of Novruz, and especially on Fire Tuesday, it's traditional to light bonfires, dance around them, and jump over them. There is a belief that by doing it one is cleansing his soul and fire burns down their worries and bad luck. Novruz is the holiday when people are celebrating the coming of spring. It is the time when families are gathering together to enjoy their time together.

Pakhlava is an essential part of those sweets that are prepared in Azerbaijan for the Novruz holidays. But it’s also enjoyed throughout the year. It is sweet with thin layers of dough, between which there is a walnut filling. In the range, there is Pakhlava with almond, as well as with walnut. Pakhlava has a distinctive diamond shape, symbolizing fire, and differs from region to region. We highly recommend trying the regional variations of Pakhlava in Sheki and Guba – two cities famous for their sweets.

Statue of a Liberated Woman is a statue by Fuad Abdurahmanov. It was built in 1960 at the Public Square at the branching of Gurbanov and Cafar Cabbarli streets in Baku, Azerbaijan, and was inspired by the character of Sevil from the Jafar Jabbarly's play Sevil. The act of publicly removing the veil symbolizes transition of Azerbaijani women from seclusion to participation in Soviet society. The statue becomes a symbol of Azerbaijani women striving for freedom, innovation, development and progress. The image of a statue exposing superstition and gender inequality in Azerbaijan's historical past reaffirmed the changing place, role and rights of Azerbaijani women in society. Reflecting the sincerity, inner will and charm of Azerbaijani women of the period in which the artist lived, this statue represents the image of a woman in a national dress, confidently walking towards the bright future with a book in her hand.

Happy International Women’s Day!!!

One of the must-visit places in Baku is Heydar Aliyev Center. The construction of the building ended on May 10, 2012, in order to celebrate National Leader’s 89th anniversary. The whole complex encompasses the main building, underground parking, and adjacent landscape area. The landscape area includes 2 decorative pools and an artificial lake. Right next to the Azerbaijan Carpet Museum there is Little Venice, a charming and relaxing space made of several waterways and bridges. You can rent a boat and row past the surrounding restaurants and green areas, or simply walk around and soak in the laid-back atmosphere.
This is a great spot to visit if you have some time to kill while strolling the Baku Boulevard. With that said, it is quite a refreshing experience to be rowing in the water next to the Caspian Sea.
