Ones Who Love to Read

With hills and highlands covered with big boulders and almost no greenery, Gobustan is an outstanding rock art landscape, where over 6000 rock engravings were found and registered, since the end of Upper Paleolithic up to the Middle Ages. In the reserve territory, 20 shelters (caves) and 40 burial mounds were also found (Farajova, 2011, 41).

In 1966, the rock art area, covering approximately 4000 ha, was declared a National reserve. Located in the eastern part of the Republic of Azerbaijan and on the western shore of the Caspian Sea Gobustan, the National Reserve was inscribed as Gobustan Rock Art Cultural Landscape into the World Heritage List in 2007 (Fig. 1).

Gobustan Rock Art Cultural Landscape consists of the following cultural features: more than 6000 petroglyphs, shelters, ancient settlements, burial sites, sacred sites.

In early Holocene, in connection with changes of hunted fauna, fluctuations of climate, with the last transgression of the Caspian Sea, changes in the subject matter of rock drawings also take place. On rocks, domesticated oxen, wild horses, deer and goats appear which are the major object of totem and hunting of that period. Images of men are less frequent. At that period there appear images of birds, zoomorphic and anthropomorphic creatures. On manner of ex*****on, they acquire more schematic view, rather than the drawings of Upper Paleolithic and Mesolithic periods. In the petroglyphs of Neolithic and Bronze Age rock carvings are divided into 2 groups, according to their stylistic features.

To the first group belong pictures of animals, executed in a more realistic way (Gobustan - Jingirdag Mountain, Kichikdash and lower terrace of Beyukdash Mountain). To the second group belong petroglyphs of images of animals in Kelbajar, on Gemigaya and in Apsheron. Concerning the style of depiction and content, the petroglyphs of the second group are closer to late images of Gobustan. In this group of pictures, new tendencies can be precisely traced. There are new images - images of goats with the horns curtailed into a circle.

AMS – dating of the cultural layers of Gobustan let single out the following chronological stages in the rock art. Should be noted that approximately 50 samples from different sites and cultural layers of Gobustan were dated by C14 and AMS dating. More than 100 separate stones with petroglyphs were discovered from these layers. These petroglyphs are in the same style and technic of ex*****on with the images on the walls of the caves.

Some the following last AMS dating of cultural layers of the caves and shelters provided the following results:

The most ancient period (the end of Upper Paleolithic). This period conditionally divided into two periods that called “phases”. Firstly chronological phases were defined by A. Leroi-Gourhan for the parietal art of Upper Paleolithic in Western Europe (Leroi-Gourhan, 1965, Leroi-Gourhan, 1967, Bahn and Vertut, 1997, Sher, 2004). Indeed the definitions of three “phases” are based on the characteristics of Gobustan petroglyphs, which are quite different from the European Cave art.

“Phase I”. (XII-X millennium B.C.) Images of aurochs heads, aurochs in natural size, deeply carved silhouettes of headless pregnant women in Gaya arasi site on Kichikdash Mountain and in life size in Ana zaga cave on Beyukdash Mountain (Fig. 2 a).

“Phase II”. (X-VIII millennium B.C.) Images of aurochs in life size, images of aurochs in combination with profiles of headless pregnant women (stones №65, №29 of the upper terrace of Beyukdash Mountain) (Fig. 2 b).

Epi Paleolithic -Mesolithic (VIII-VII millennium B.C.) Deeply carved silhouette of men-hunters, as well as those with bows and arrows; petroglyphs on separate stones from the cultural layers of such settlements as Okuzler 2 and Kaniza of the upper terrace of Beyukdash, Gaya arasi and Firuz 1, Firuz 2 of Kichikdash and Shongar Mountains. There are mainly images of women, hunters, boats and aurochs here (Fig. 3, Fig. 4 a,b).

Azerbaijan kicks off project to research mud volcanoes scientifically.

Mud volcanoes in Azerbaijan have been taken under scientific control.

Speaking with journalists, Vice-President of the National Academy of Sciences Ibrahim Guliyev said that the work is being carried out within the project implemented with the funds of an international grant won by the academy.
The National Academy of Sciences has installed 22 stations – special sensors, including those around volcanoes.
“The grant is related to the expansion of the seismic network in the Caucasus and Central Asia. Around 60 stations will be delivered, including ours in the Caspian Sea, as well as on mud volcanoes,” the academician said.
He noted that more than half of the 1,300 mud volcanoes in the world are located in Azerbaijan, and almost a third of them are in the Azerbaijani sector of the Caspian Sea.
Tourists can get a unique panoramic view of the spectacular natural wonder in the Gobustan State Historical-Artistic Reserve.
The world’s largest mud volcanoes – Boyuk Khanizadagh and Turaghai – are both in Azerbaijan. Boyuk Khanizadagh erupted on October 10, 2001, shooting out flames for 300 meters in the air. It was the highest record for flames shot from a mud volcano.
NASA geologists studying Mars concluded that the mud volcanoes of Azerbaijan are similar to the uplands of the planet in their structure.
On September 5, 2004, the largest mud volcano in the territory of Azerbaijan was added to the Guinness World Records. Azerbaijan’s rich fields of oil and gas condensate such as Lokbatan, Garadagh, Oil Rocks, and Mishovdag were also discovered near mud volcanoes.
The lava, mud, and liquid spewed by mud volcanoes are used as raw materials for chemical and construction industries, as well as pharmacology.
What is the relationship between mud volcanoes and oil?
Mud volcanoes associated with hydrocarbons resemble super-deep exploration wells in the sense that they can be direct indicators of petroleum deposits at great depths and provide valuable information on the formation and migration of oil and gas. Both mud volcanoes and hydrocarbon fields are the result of a single process of oil and gas formation, which has a characteristic vertical zone with methane gas forming in the younger strata, overlying a zone of intense formation of oil and gases.

How are mud volcanoes similar to lava volcanoes?
Mud volcanoes and lava volcanoes are considered to be close cousins. Both can be enormously powerful. Both seem to be unpredictable in terms of when they will erupt. Both can hurl out flames and billows of smoke to great heights, sometimes several hundred meters. Both can spew out millions of cubic meters of clay from the bowels of the earth. Both can create islands if they erupt from the floor of the sea.
Why are there so many mud volcanoes located in Azerbaijan?
Mud volcanoes are associated with oil and gas prospects often within hydrocarbon source rocks. Hydrocarbon deposits are estimated to be very high in Azerbaijan, especially in the lower geological sections of the middle Pliocene, Paleogene-Miocene and Mesozoic layers.

Do mud volcanoes occur only on land?
No, like their igneous cousins, mud volcanoes can also be found on the floor of the sea.

How large can mud volcanoes be?
Mud volcanoes differ greatly in size. Usually, their height does not exceed more than 1-2 meters although some mud volcano mounds grow to around 500-700m high. In width, they can range from a few centimeters to a few kilometers.
What kind of effect do mud volcanoes have on the environment?
According to John Woodside, a geologist at the Free University in Amsterdam and one of the leading researchers in the Medmud Project, which is investigating volcanoes on the bottom of the Mediterranean, mud volcanoes can cause both positive and negative effects on the environment. On the sea floor, they provide a unique ecosystem for bacteria, with their abundant heat and minerals.

The Republic of Azerbaijan government has made it much easier for people to visit the country by introducing the eVisa program. The process of applying for a tourist visa to Azerbaijan used to be a long and tedious one, that took weeks and involved multiple trips to embassies and not to forget hefty fees.

However, the introduction of Azerbaijan electronic visa has made it extremely convenient and straightforward for people to apply for and obtain a visa to enter Azerbaijan. There aren’t any formalities involved as the applicant doesn’t need to visit the Azerbaijan embassy or consulate at all and the entire process of application is conducted online.

From receiving the application form and submitting it after filling it out and attaching the required documents to receiving the visa, everything is done online. That’s why it is called an electronic visa Azerbaijan. The process is so simple that renowned British travel magazine Wanderlust declared it the world’s easiest e-visa system when it was implemented in 2017. Tourists from over 98 countries can apply for the Azerbaijan eVisa.

However, remember that it is a single-entry visa, and if you want to visit with your family or friends, each visitor will need to obtain an Azerbaijan eVisa separately.

What is ASAN Visa?
ASAN Visa is a system of obtaining electronic visas implemented by the government of Azerbaijan. The applications for e visa Azerbaijan are processed through the ASAN visa portal, which is recognized by the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan and handled by the State Agency for Public Service and Social Innovation.

MARK YOUR CALENDARS: OFFICIAL DATE FOR THE 2024 FORMULA 1 AZERBAIJAN GRAND PRIX ANNOUNCED!

Formula 1 has announced the calendar for the 2024 FIA Formula One World Championship, approved by the World Motor Sport Council.
According to the new calendar, the capital Baku will be hosting the upcoming Azerbaijan Grand Prix on September 13-15, 2024. The Baku race is set to be held for the eighth time and is among the 24 races featured in the new season. The season will kick off in Bahrain on March 2 and finish in Abu Dhabi on December 8.
Formula 1 has drafted the calendar with the intention to move towards greater calendar regionalisation, reducing logistical burdens, and making the season more sustainable.
By moving Japan to April, Azerbaijan to September, and Qatar back-to-back with Abu Dhabi, this calendar creates a better flow of races in certain regions and ultimately contributes to effective race management when it comes to logistics.

Speaking of the 2024 Formula 1 calendar announcement, Stefano Domenicali, President and CEO of Formula 1, said: “I am delighted to announce the 2024 calendar with 24 races that will deliver an exciting season for our fans around the world. There is huge interest and continued demand for Formula 1, and I believe this calendar strikes the right balance between traditional races and new and existing venues. I want to thank all of the promoters and partners for their support and effort to achieve this great schedule. Our journey to a more sustainable calendar will continue in the coming years as we further streamline operations as part of our Net Zero 2030 commitment. We have plenty of racing to look forward to in 2023, including the inaugural Las Vegas Grand Prix, and our fans can look forward to more excitement next season.”

Some Advise from Addtrip: “Book your earlier!”
Booking a hotel early is generally cheaper than booking late, especially in a Formula 1. Hotels often offer lower rates for early bookings as a way to fill their rooms in advance. Additionally, by booking early, you have a wider selection of available rooms and more time to compare prices and find the best deal. On the other hand, booking late may result in higher prices and limited availability, especially during peak travel seasons or when there are special events happening in the area.
