Bosnia and Herzegovina is the heart shaped land that lies in the heart of southeast Europe. It is here that eastern and western civilizations met, sometimes clashed, but more often enriched and reinforced each other throughout its long and fascinating history. Bosnia and Herzegovina is a long name for a country that measures just over 50,000 km2. Bosnia covers the north and centre of the country w

ith its name probably derived from 'bosana', an old Indo-European word meaning water, which Bosnia has no short of. The southern region of ancient Hum, ruled by Herceg Stjepan (Duke Stjepan),was later named Herzegovina after the region was conquered by the invading Ottomans. Perhaps what is most important for the visitor to know today, though, is that Bosnia and Herzegovinais a stunningly beautiful country with a vast array of landscapes, cultures, traditions and people. And as the old cliche goes 'people make the place' – and BiH prides itself on its hospitality and treating our guests as if they were family members.

MINIMUM WAGE IN FBIH WILL BE ONE THOUSAND KM AS OF JANUARY 1

FBiH Minister of Development, Entrepreneurship and Crafts, Vojin Mijatović, is participating in the international conference "CORE Days 2023: Growing Smart and Green - Local, Regional, European", which started today in Kotor, where he announced that the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina will have the highest minimum wage in the region as of January 1, 2024.

''I can officially announce that from January 1, 2024, the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina will start implementing a large set of fiscal laws. We will have the highest minimum wage in the region in the amount of 1,000 KM, and we will have the lowest burden on work or salary in the amount of 28 percent, which will be a great message to domestic and foreign investors, but also to all others in the region to try to reach that standard to become very attractive for foreign investments,'' Vojin Mijatović said at the conference.

He believes that it is sometimes difficult for representatives of local self-government units to implement some things that are enacted at higher levels.

''Everything that is good practice in one country is sometimes difficult to implement in another country, then it is also sometimes difficult to adapt these European practices to our conditions, but these are real challenges that give us an obligation to be ready for the future,'' said the FBiH Minister and added that the ultimate goal of all the countries of the Western Balkans is to join the EU although they sometimes do not have positive experiences or "not so positive messages" are sent from Brussels.

The CORE Days conference deals with the local economic development of the Western Balkans, and at this year's conference, a large number of government representatives, entrepreneurs, and international representatives gathered to discuss the economy, climate change, ecology, digitization, sustainability, and other topics.

A FLAG OF PALESTINE DISPLAYED AT OLD BRIDGE IN MOSTAR

On Tuesday, a dive was performed from the Old Bridge in Mostar as a sign of support for the Palestinian people, and a large flag of Palestine was displayed, which has since been removed.

Two days ago, the company Aluminij in Mostar was illuminated with the colors of the Israeli flag with the inscription "We stand with Israel".

The University of Mostar also showed support for the Israeli people earlier, displaying the Israeli flag on its building, while the players of the Zrinjski Football Club ran out onto the pitch with black armbands before yesterday's match with Sloga as a sign of support for Israel and all the innocent victims.

THE SEASON IN MEDJUGORJE IS EXCELLENT

Hoteliers and room renters in Medjugorje are very satisfied with this year’s season, and a special indicator of a good season is the number of pilgrims from the USA, Spain and Ireland, who return in large numbers to this place in Herzegovina.

“The season is not even close to the end yet, it lasts from Easter to All Saints’ Day, and pilgrims also come for Advent and New Year. We can all be very satisfied with this season in Medjugorje, the year of the return of pilgrims from all continents to Medjugorje. What surprised local hoteliers a little unpleasantly was the smaller number of Italians than usual, but this is due to the present fear of the coronavirus. There are fewer Italians, but there are a lot more of everyone else,” Davor Ljubić, president of the Assembly of the Association of Hotel Tourism and Room Renters (UTHIS) in Međugorje, said in an interview with Fena.

As he says, apart from the Croats, who are the most numerous, a huge number of pilgrims come from Poland, and they are particularly pleased with the return of the Americans.

“I have already pointed out several times that we are pleased with the great return of the Americans, but also of the Spaniards and the Irish. The return of Americans is most favored by a direct flight between Dubrovnik and New York. Americans are an important segment for every market, because where an American comes, that means that it must be a location. The return of the Americans means that the service in Medjugorje is also excellent, because they maintain the quality of the facilities, which shows that Medjugorje is a destination with a large number of quality facilities. Americans are looking for spiritual renewal, but also for hedonism, to make their soul and body feel good,” emphasizes Ljubić.

According to him, Međugorje is an important starting point for tourism in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

“Gone are the days when pilgrims came only to Međugorje, today they go to Mostar, Neum, Sarajevo, Kravica, and from that side Međugorje deserves to be among the leading tourist and pilgrimage centers, because pilgrimage is a type of tourism. All those who gravitate to Medjugorje live well. Also, some new opportunities are opening up, especially with the fast road from Stolac to Neum, opportunities to see the natural beauty of Herzegovina,” he believes.

As of this year, Croatia is a Schengen member, and that creates problems for group tourism in Međugorje, because the procedures at the border are different.

“I highlighted this as a problem even before the season started, not much has changed, but we assumed that there would be long waits at the border crossings in the peak season. In addition to the procedures, you must announce the entry of the bus, which border crossing it will enter, payment of VAT at the border crossing itself. In addition, there were a lot of difficulties, the introduction of vignettes in Mostar, an increase in vignette prices in Međugorje, an increase in parking prices, but we pushed through the season,” said Ljubić.

He believes that in the future Međugorje and Mostar Airport can have even more mutual benefits from each other.

“Mostar airport has potential as far as Medjugorje is concerned, through Medjugorje we have a current connection with two major pilgrimage sites in Italy: San Giovanni Rotondo and Foggia. We have a connection with Foggia airport twice a week from May to October and we hope that this line will continue to prosper next year and that we will be able to connect with Italy with this line as intended. The plan is to have direct, or through Foggia, connection with Catania, with northern Italy (Verona, Bergamo, Milan) next year. I also hope that with Croatia Airlines (CA) we will finish the story of opening a line with Rome, this year we did not succeed because CA did not have enough crews. We are definitely going to implement that project next year, to have a twice-weekly line between Mostar and Rome,” reveals the president of the Assembly of UTHIS Međugorje.

He adds that Mostar Airport also depends on the decisions of low-cost companies.

“Low-cost carriers choose a route that is interesting to them, Mostar is interesting, but Split and Dubrovnik are more interesting to them because they attract a lot more guests. We managed to make some contacts, but we don’t know when the first lines will be implemented. Let’s expect that Mostar Airport will reach the figure of 50,000 passengers next year,” Ljubić thinks.

He also expects that the postseason in Medjugorje will be just as good.

“As for Medjugorje itself, we have never had Advent in the sense that other destinations have, pilgrimage is important to us. Advent is always well attended here, especially on weekends. I believe that next year we will learn with new prices, because this year there was a consolidation of the market. Međugorje today has between 8,000 and 10,000 beds and they are filled very well, during the big holidays they were filled 100 percent, which means that there is a lot of interest in Međugorje,” concluded Ljubić.

Proof that the Americans have returned is a large number of them praying in the area of the Medjugorje church, and one of them is Augustin Ngwa, who comes from Atlanta, Georgia.

“This is my first visit to Medjugorje, I came for several reasons, for a pilgrimage, to celebrate the 20th wedding anniversary of a colleague, so far everything has been a beautiful experience. Medjugorje is a fantasytically, we saw places with miracles, we met beautiful people, it was a rich experience,” said Ngwa.

He and his group are very satisfied with the prices in Medjugorje.

“To be honest, I expected it to be a little more expensive. We took a taxi, it was only five or six dollars. The prices are quite low, compared to other places. Everyone has a good experience regarding Medjugorje, it is something we will remember for the rest of our lives. Everything was fantastic and I plan to return in the near future,” said the pilgrim from the USA.

In addition to Americans, there are also a large number of pilgrims from Spain in September, and among them is Juan Mer Tepraz from Castellón.

“I am in Medjugorje with my mother, we came for spiritual reasons. It’s my first time here, and what I especially like are the people and how calm everything is,” said the Spanish pilgrim.

The value of imported wine in BiH is four to five times higher than the value of exported wine

From January 1 to July 31 this year, the statistical value of wine imported into Bosnia and Herzegovina amounted to 21.43 million KM, and that of exported wine to 5.36 million KM, thus continuing the trend of imports being many times higher than exports.

In 2022, 8.48 million liters of wine with a value of 39.49 million KM were imported, while 3.16 million liters with a value of 7.66 million KM were exported, the Indirect Taxation Administration (ITA) of BiH confirmed for FENA.

The situation was similar in previous years, so in 2021, 8.4 million liters of wine worth 33.74 million KM were imported, while 3.2 million liters worth 6.37 million KM were exported.

Therefore, the Parliamentary Assembly of BiH recently adopted the Law on the Organization of the Wine Market in BiH, which confirms the appropriate compliance with European Union regulations in the area of the wine market.

It was stated that this law seeks to ensure greater competitiveness and better access of producers from Bosnia and Herzegovina to European and world markets, along with better conditions for wine production.

A significant part of the law refers to the systematic regulation of the area in connection with designations of origin and to the labeling, presentation and advertising of wine products, as well as to the placing of these products on the market, their supervision and control, including provisions on organic wines, flavored wine products and fruit wines.

The Foreign Trade Chamber of Bosnia and Herzegovina, within whose framework the Group of Wine Producers and Exporters in Bosnia and Herzegovina also operates, pointed out that winemakers have repeatedly emphasized that it is necessary to organize this area to be competitive in the world market.

It is specified that about 18 million liters of wine are produced annually in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and about 70 producers are registered.

EU provides EUR 770.000 to boost infrastructure, cooperation and tourism in Majevica region

As part of its continuous support to the development of sustainable tourism in Bosnia and Herzegovina, the European Union is providing EUR 770.000 in grants across five municipalities located in both the Federation and Republika Srpska in the Majevica region.

The municipalities of Čelić, Lopare, Sapna, Teočak and Ugljevik are working together to establish new tourist offers in the Majevica and Podmajevica region that can produce new jobs and business opportunities in this part of the country.

The Majevica and Podmajevica region is known for its rich cultural and historical heritage and natural beauty. It presents many advantages for tourists, including a rich gastronomical offer, rural tourism, and opportunities for cycling and trail running. Opportunities to boost tourism are limited however by inadequate infrastructure.

The EU is therefore providing support by funding the reconstruction of the Crveno Brdo mountain lodge in Ugljevik, the medieval cultural monument necropolis of the Stećak of Međeđa in Sapna, the source of sulphur water in Lopare, the natural Lake Humačko in Čelić and the Bosnian Cultural Center in Teočak.

''I am happy that we are working together with local authorities in five municipalities on the development of this area to set up the foundations for sustainable tourism. Our support comes with the objective of creating new jobs and providing a unique recreational resource for citizens as well as tourists. Tourism can and should be a source of economic growth, and BiH needs to use this potential. This project demonstrates yet again that working together yields the best results for citizens,'' said Stefano Ellero Head of the Cooperation Section of the EU Delegation to BiH.

The completed works on the Majevica’s pearl Humačko Lake, a natural lake on the mountain slopes between Gornji Humci and Sitari, were presented on Tuesday, 19 September in the presence of the local authorities of the five municipalities, citizens and the media. Because the lake is rich in fish, it is attractive to fishing enthusiasts and has great potential for the development of fishing tourism. The EU supported the rehabilitation of the Humačko Lake, access pathways, and bathing sites, allowing for the development of sports and recreational tourism.

"The arrangement of Humačko Lake will contribute to the development of tourism, a more beautiful and more pleasant environment for staying in untouched nature, as well as sport fishing, which is already traditional on this lake. Two more very important projects for the population of the Municipality of Čelić are also in the implementation phase, namely, the clearing of terrain that is still infested with mines and the construction of a fire station, which the Municipality of Čelić didn’t have until now,'' Admir Hrustanović, Mayor of Čelić said.

During the ceremony at Humačko Lake, a short film about the tourist potential of the Majevica region was screened.

"The EU intervention through support in the Majevica project is significant because it has resulted in many projects, thus building cohesion among the citizens of our region, by developing infrastructure in our local communities. Cohesion is built through mutual trust, cooperation, common ideas, and projects, which contribute to a better life for our citizens," emphasized Rado Savić, Mayor of Lopare.

The project "EU for Local Communities" is funded by the European Union to improve citizens' living standards and strengthen the capacities of local communities in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The project is implemented by the Center for the Promotion of Civil Society (CPCD) with the partner organization Help.

The European Union is moreover providing an additional 700.000 euros in grants for infrastructure interventions and small-scale actions in the Majevica region through 'Možemo bolje' project, an initiative implemented with the OSCE, UN, and the Council of Europe aimed at strengthening social cohesion and promoting cooperation. These actions have been carried out in collaboration with local authorities and non-governmental organizations in this area, the EU Delegation in BiH announced.

"GRAPOS EXPO 2023" fair opens in Gračanica - Economy and innovation in one place

The 12th international entrepreneurship and trade fair "GRAPOS EXPO 2023" opened in Gračanica, bringing together around 150 exhibitors from the country and abroad.

The fair was organized by the City of Gračanica and the Association of Employers and Independent Entrepreneurs of Gračanica, while the technical contractor is BOMS-EXPO, and it covers an area of about 18,000 square meters. Most of the exhibitors are from the metal industry, chemical and non-metal industry, plastic processing, wood and construction industry. There are also innovative high-tech companies, as well as crafts, small businesses and others.

Prime Minister of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Nermin Nikšić, the Mayor of Gračanica, Nusret Helić, the President of the Association of Employers and Independent Entrepreneurs, Mirsad Helić, and the Minister of Economy of the Tuzla Canton Edin Duraković officially opened the Fair.

The theme of this fair, as Nikšić said, is dedicated to innovative technologies, the importance of which has long been recognized by the entrepreneurs of Gračanica in their development. The Fair will certainly, as he added, enable all entrepreneurs and participants to make new business contacts, and establish cooperation and that all this results in new business successes.

Nikšić emphasized that the FBiH Government supports this and similar economic events and that earlier support was provided in the construction of the business zone in Gračanica and the equipping of the sports hall.

''Together with entrepreneurs, we are working to create a more favorable business environment, and I can announce that we are coming to an end, and already next week we should start discussing with our partners a set of fiscal laws, that should create a much better business environment, relieve entrepreneurs, increase minimum wages, as well as the creation of better working conditions,'' said Nikšić.

Mayor of Gračanica, Nusret Helić, reminded that "GRAPOS EXPO" was founded in 2010 with enthusiasm and the desire to confirm as an entrepreneurial bazaar and a city where people always come for some work, trade and business, as well as a city where positive events take place and from where positive messages are sent.

The opening of the Fair was attended by a delegation of the FBiH Government led by President Nermin Nikšić, representatives of the diplomatic corps, the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan, chambers of commerce and trade, international organizations and others.

The Fair is open until September 23.

Clinton: The greatest tribute to the more than 8,000 killed in Srebrenica is to build a safer world

Former US President Bill Clinton pointed out that the greatest tribute everyone can pay to the more than 8,000 men and boys killed in the genocide in Srebrenica is to build a future worthy of their memory.

He said this at the commemoration of 20 years since the official opening of the Srebrenica - Potočari Memorial Center, a memorial and cemetery for the victims of genocide.

''Let's make up for the years they can not have by building a world where all children are safe, loved and have their chance to pursue their own dreams, where cooperation triumphs over conflict, and where people of all backgrounds live together as true partners. I still believe that such a future is possible and I will always stand with you as we work together to make it a reality,'' said Clinton in his speech.

He pointed out that he will never forget participating in its opening in 2003.

''As I said that day, it was my hope and prayer that this site would be a sober reminder for the whole world of our common humanity, and during these twenty years the Memorial Center has been that much and more,'' he said.

Clinton pointed out that the Memorial Center is a place of remembrance and reflection, a lasting tribute to the lost lives and a solemn promise that everyone must be vigilant against such horrors in Bosnia and Herzegovina and everywhere else.

He thanked everyone who contributed to making the Memorial Center what it is today and what it will always be.

This memorial complex, located in Potočari not far from Srebrenica, was established by the Decision of the High Representative, and it was officially opened on September 20, 2003, by Bill Clinton, then President of the United States of America.

The Center was founded as a memorial complex whose role is to nurture and preserve the memory of the innocent victims of genocide, and which, at the same time, is a kind of reminder and admonition to future generations so that it never happens again to anyone.

Dizdar signs contracts for internships for 40 returnees with a university degree

FBiH Minister of Displaced Persons and Refugees, Nerin Dizdar, today signed contracts that will ensure internships for 40 returnees with a university degree through work, with or without establishing an employment relationship, in the municipalities of the Federation of BiH and the entity Republika Srpska.

By signing the contract, these candidates are guaranteed an internship with 32 employers in 22 municipalities in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Minister Dizdar said that they allocated slightly more than 300,000 KM for the first work experience for 40 returnees on the territory of Bosnia and Herzegovina and that they are returnees with higher educational qualifications.

''One of the basic tasks of the Ministry is to ensure the true sustainability of the return, above all ensuring the existence i.e. jobs. We are witnessing that a large number of young people have this basic obstacle, which is the lack of basic work experience to establish permanent job later,'' explained Minister Dizdar.

At the same time, he added, the Ministry also announced a public call for employment of returnees in public institutions at the local level, public companies, and public institutions, and he expressed the hope that next year all today's signatories will be permanently employed with the support of that Ministry.

The employer, chairman of the Board of Directors of the Memorial Center Srebrenica - Potočari, Hamdija Fejzić addressed the audience and said that the ministry is doing its best to ensure that returnees can live and work in the RS.

''This is the only institution that finances and helps returnees solve their problems,'' he stated.

More than 10,000 students have attended courses at PSOTC over the past 20 years

The Peace Support Operations Training Center (PSOTC) will hold a solemn ceremony on Monday, September 18, to celebrate the 20th anniversary of their successful work in the field of education under the motto '20 Years of Excellence'.

PSOTC was founded on September 23, 2003, when a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the United Kingdom and Bosnia and Herzegovina. Since then an impressive number of military and courses of a broader security spectrum have been realized.

“It is important to say that seven NATO-certified courses, four UN-certified courses, and two courses accredited by the University of Sarajevo have been conducted in PSOTC so far. In the past 20 years, more than 10,000 students have been trained at PSOTC, almost half of whom were international participants from 65 different countries around the world,” PSOTC told FENA.

They stated that the fact that a large number of students who complete some of their courses apply for other courses and are happy to return speaks in favor of the professionalism, approach, and quality of teaching.

PSOTC is not a training center that operates only in Bosnia and Herzegovina but its presence in the international environment is achieved through the instructor exchange program with other international centers and through the engagement of the PSOTC mobile training team, which has so far conducted training in more than 17 different countries on three continents.

“With the unconditional support that this center has from the Ministry of Defense and international partners, PSOTC will continue with the implementation of many projects in the coming period, improving the already high standards, and in this way represent the Ministry of Defense, the Armed Forces of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and the country at the international level,” said PSOTC for FENA.

GRAPE HARVEST HAS STARTED IN BIH, ONE OF THE WORST YEARS

September is the month when grapes are traditionally harvested (picking) in Brotnje and Herzegovina, and that this will be one of the years in which there will be fewer grapes due to weather problems and diseases, the chief enologist of the Čitluk Winery, Tihomir Prusina, confirmed in an interview with Fena.

“Unfortunately, I have to say that in my 39 years of service here at the Čitluk Winery, this is the worst harvest year in Brotnje, automatically in Herzegovina. There I will exclude the Čitluk Winery, some large winegrowers and winemakers who managed to protect the grapes. Today in Brotnje, you have vineyards where there are not even a single ounce of grapes per 1,000 vines, downy mildew (or downy mildew) has taken its toll,” said Prusina, who revealed the reason for that.

“At one point there were seven days of intense rain, if you treated the vine with some contact or other means, at that time the vine could not assimilate those organic means to protect itself. It was a short period. Those persistent people who worked intensively in these abnormal conditions, so instead of 8 to 14 days between treatments in normal conditions, they managed to save their vines because they treated them on the fifth or sixth day,” explains the chief oenologist of the Čitluk Winery and adds that it is important listening to the profession also played a factor.

The people who managed to save their vineyards have the same grapes as last year, and the quality remains the same.

“We have already been picking for a week, this year the quality of the remaining grapes is identical to last year. The vineyards that were damaged, now it is important to preserve them for the next year’s harvest. Downy mildew is here, it is too intense and has never been like this, it will be necessary to do a fine pruning and then two winter sprayings against the disease so that it does not spread into the next year. We know that all vine diseases overwinter on the ground and fallen leaves, raindrops, dew and wind carry the disease and spread it further. We need to be careful in order to have something next year as well,” he warns.

As he says, a very important role is played by the vineyard position, slopes, rocky terrain, higher altitude.

“In Brotnje, the area of Čitluk, Čerin and Hamzić fields suffered the most. Those vineyards are located at lower altitudes, and that also depended on how much rain fell where. The eastern parts of Brotnje, such as Tepčić, Dobro Selo, had less precipitation and managed to protect the vineyards,”said Prusina.

Unlike private and small winegrowers, Čitluk Winery has completely preserved its vineyards.

“The winery has preserved 100 percent of its vineyards, there are no diseases here because we used earlier protection. We have five plantation vineyards, each of which has a graduate engineer in agronomy who supervises everything. I personally get asked for advice quite a few times, mostly in the wine segment, but it was more frequent about thirty years ago. People were educated, they remembered my advice, they use it, and I’m glad about that,” he said.

RIPAC – FROM A RETURNEE SETTLEMENT TO A TOURIST DESTINATION

Ripac as a settlement offers a combination of history, nature, and cultural heritage, which makes it an interesting destination for tourists who want to explore this part of Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH). Despite this, even this settlement in Bihac was not spared from the negative trend of migration of the local population. Many locals left their homeland and today live and work in the countries of the European Union (EU).

Ripac settlement near Bihac is located at the entrance to Bihac. Its history goes back many centuries. Archaeological findings were found here that testify to the presence of people as far back as the Roman Empire. During the Middle Ages, Ripac was ruled by various rulers, such as Bosnian kings and Ottoman sultans. The influences of these cultures left their mark on the architecture and cultural heritage of the settlement.

One of the sights of Ripac is the old mosque that dates back to the Ottoman period. The mosque was set on fire during World War II in 1942 by a local Orthodox priest who confessed to the crime. The members of the Ripač Islamic Center have taken it upon themselves to restore this historical monument and restore its significance and role as it once had.

“Mehmed Dupanovic initiated the idea to start the initiative to restore the mosque on the Velika Otoka, in the very historical core of Ripac, 15 years ago. The campaign to clean the foundations of the mosque began during the COVID-19 pandemic. Citizens responded to the campaign, and we cleaned the remains of the former mosque, and the City of Bihac helped with certain funds to start the renovation project, as did the Government of the Una-Sana Canton (USC). After that, funds slowly arrived in the form of donations,” said the president of the Ripac local community, Adil Museta.

The mosque was officially opened at the beginning of August this year.

Ripac is also famous for its nature. Located near the Una River, this region attracts tourists with its beautiful landscapes, forests, and waterways. The Una River is an ideal place for activities such as rafting, canoeing, and fishing. There are also the national parks Una and Plitvice Lakes nearby, which are known for their natural beauty.

Tourism is important for Ripac, with several options for accommodation, from hotels to private apartments. Tourists can explore nature, cycle along numerous trails, enjoy sports activities on the river Una, or visit nearby national parks.

“Most of Ripac rests on the river Una, which is why it has become a tourist destination. Before the war, Lohovo, Racic, and Prascijak were settlements where people lived. Today, they are tourist areas and zones where tourists stay. As for visits, after the COVID-19 pandemic, they are on the rise again, and we can safely say that this season is satisfactory,” Museta emphasized.

He states, however, that as in other local communities, there was an exodus of the population in Ripac.

“Recently, there has been a slight decrease in migration, and this year I have not yet heard of anyone leaving here. We do not have accurate information and records on how many locals have left the settlement, but this can be felt by the drop in the number of students at school. There are about twenty Serbian families in Lohovo, and the local community has about 400 households and 2.160 inhabitants,” Museta stated.
