We are just over only one week into the new year, and we have already welcomed many guests to Mostar! The group in this photo just happens to be from our first tour of 2025. Even better, one of our guests on New Year’s Day had already joined Sheva Walking Tours on a previous visit and decided to return to Mostar once again with her friends. Whether solo or in the company of additional friends and family, we love having the opportunity to welcome guests back to town! We know from personal experience that Mostar has a way of drawing people back again (and again and again)…and in some cases, some visitors are compelled to stay and call it home!

27/12/2024

Wander the narrow streets of Mostar, especially the old mahalas dating from the city’s expansion during the Ottoman period, and you will likely notice the metal door knockers at the entrance of homes. These traditional round door knockers are often referred to as Zvekir, but more traditionally called Halka in the region of Herzegovina. The design is found as a motif in artistic works and used for inspiration in locally produced jewelry. It is present within the time worn lyrics of celebrated sevdalinka songs.

Whether ornately designed or a more simplistic solid disk, the Halka is always a beautiful sign of welcome into the home of your family, friends, and neighbors. It has come to represent the type of hospitality for which the people of Bosnia and Herzegovina are well known - not only amongst our own community members but also extended to our international visitors and guests.

But don’t take our word for it! “Bujrum” (another word you will likely hear upon arrival!) - welcome and come join us in Bosnia and Herzegovina and experience the warm welcome of our country and its people. We hope to see you soon!

As 2024 draws to a close, the Sheva Walking Tours Team celebrates another memorable year introducing our wonderful guests to Mostar and our city’s surroundings. Even on the briefest of visits, our guests quickly fall in love with the history, culture, and heritage of our region, which is transmitted and comes alive through genuine interactions with community members.

Amongst some of the most impactful experiences for our guests have been the visits with Mostar’s creators - those who not only ensure the continuity of traditional crafts, but reinvigorate these practices with meaningful storytelling. The artistic work of Mostar’s creators infuse homes and workplaces (near and far) with their creativity and passion; their stories leave a lasting impression on those who have had the privilege of visiting their workshops. Let us celebrate the makers this season and support their timeless work by shopping local for holiday gift giving!

As 2024 draws to a close, what are you celebrating? Drop us a comment and let us know!

Mostar is the gateway to Herzegovina - an ideal place from which to base your wider explorations of the region during your stay!

Although online sources suggest that Mostar is merely a brief stop en route to another destination, we suggest otherwise! Unpack your bags and stay a while. From Mostar, so many incredible sites are accessible and within a short drive (or even bike ride) from your doorstep. Rather than spend your days in a car driving long distances with only quick stops, use your time on the ground to discover our landscape, culture, history, and cuisine! Each day can be a new opportunity, another adventure.

Upon arrival, join us for an introductory tour to Mostar’s past and present - we offer both group and private tours. If you schedule a private tour, be sure to let us know if there is something - a site, topic, historical figure, or cultural practice - which interests you. We can customize private tours to suit your interests and integrate activities along our way. Not only will you gain an understanding of the city streets you are traversing, but you will receive plenty of recommendations and local tips for your visit.

After a day in Mostar, continue your adventure with our Herzegovina Day Tour. Join a small group tour or book a private experience tailored to your desires! One essential stop along the journey is nearby Blagaj - a picturesque village situated at the source of the Buna River and which is home to Stjepan Grad (a medieval fortress )which overlooks the valley and the Dervish Tekija (seen here!). The blend of cultural, natural, and spiritual significance you will find in Blagaj is exceptional…and it is only one of many destinations you will surely want to include on your Herzegovina itinerary!

The Pomegranate.

The late autumn season is associated with the harvesting of pomegranates and the production of local syrups, jellies, and juices. Vendors stack crates of local pomegranates to press into juice for those passing by. While pomegranates are seen as an exotic and elusive fruit in some places, one can walk down the streets of Mostar (and throughout Herzegovina) and reach up to pluck a pomegranate from a tree hanging heavy with the ripening fruit and indulge in its seeds. Pomegranates are part of our local landscape!

The pomegranate is rich with mythological associations and symbolic meaning wherever it has been historically cultivated. In Mostar, it is no different - considered a symbol of the city, the pomegranate has symbolic and historical significance as well as agricultural value.

The pomegranate is a symbol of resilience, regeneration, and hope - qualities that have become essential in the post-war recovery efforts of Mostar’s community. Traditionally, the pomegranate motif is integrated in locally made art and handicrafts which also reflects the influence of Ottoman and Mediterranean culture in the region. The fertile lands of the Neretva River Valley are home to the cultivation of pomegranates, which contributes to the local economy and ties the community to its Agrarian roots.

We have had some beautiful fall weather this year that has gently slid into what Mostar describes as winter…cool, mornings with fresh blue skies - an absolute treat! By mid morning, the Old Town will be calling out to you for exploration, followed by afternoons just warm enough to catch a coffee outdoors under the Herzegovina sun.

But don’t stop at the cobblestones! While the Old Bridge will draw you to Mostar, the city, its people, and the incredible landscape will often make you want to postpone your departure and stay a while longer.

Whether with one of the Sheva Walking Tours Team or on your own, keep on walking. There is more of Mostar (both in and out of town) to discover. Get lost in the streets hunting for street art, walk the steps up through the Orthodox Cemetery, or seek out what will become your favorite coffee spot. Join us and get to know Mostar!

Planning to join one of our group tours and looking for our meeting spot?

Our group tours gather in front of the Hamam, centrally located at the entrance of Old Town! This location offers a large open plaza where it is easier to spot our team member at tour time even during the busy season! The Hamam is also located near to a few parking lots that are convenient for visitors arriving by car just prior to the tour. For those guests staying overnight in Mostar (highly recommended!), our meeting point is in easy walking distance from many of the most popular accommodations in and around the UNESCO zone!

Through winter, catch us in front of the Hamam at tour time! Remember, reservations required - let us know you are coming so that a member of our team is ready to greet you!

A group on a recent autumn day paused to take a group photo at Karadoz Beg Mosque. Although outside of the cobblestone area of the UNESCO zone, Karadoz Beg Mosque should be on your radar when visiting Mostar!

Completed in 1557, Karadoz-Beg Mosque is an exceptional example of religious Ottoman architecture, boasting Mimar Sinan - still one of the most revered architects - as its designer. The mosque complex includes a sadrvan, soup kitchen, madrasa, and library. These features served the needs of the local community.

Like most monuments of cultural and religious significance, Karadoz Beg Mosque was heavily damaged during the wars of the early 1990s. The complex underwent extensive reconstruction and was reopened in 2004. Today, it is used by the local community for daily prayers and visited by members of our global community. When visiting, please be sure to respect prayer times and dress according to local custom if entering the interior space!

Our newest guide and member of the Sheva Walking Tours Team, Divna, was caught in action on a recent tour! If you join us for our Heart of Mostar Tour, you will likely have the pleasure of meeting Divna in person!

One of our stops during both our group tip-based tours and private tours that include the UNESCO zone of Old Town, Mostar is Koski Mehmed Pasha Mosque. One compelling reason to visit this site is that visitors are able to climb the minaret for a breathtaking view of the Old Bridge and the surrounding town. In fact, this activity (climbing the minaret) is listed by Conde Naste Traveller as one of the essential 50 things to do in Europe! The burn you feel walking up the narrow stone steps is well worth the exceptional view!

We are feeling the ebb and flow of the seasons in Mostar at the moment! While some in this recent evening group are still holding on to their summertime shorts and sandals…little by little the sweaters are coming out of closets (or luggage bags!).

The busy season for visitation is slowly drawing to a close, the leaves are changing color, and soon we will be encountering the fragrance of chestnuts roasted by street vendors. It is a wonderful time of year, when we move a little slower and wonder at how quickly the last months went!

Join us in Mostar for the autumn colors and the delights of the season. Our daily tours move to 11 AM with more options on the weekend! For a custom experience, ask about private tour options. 20/10/2024

Spotted on tour during a beautiful October day. While the summer season will always attract the most crowds, there is so much to say about traveling during the off season.

Not only do the fall months offer some gorgeous weather that is ideal for those that prefer more moderate temperatures (the high today was 23 C or 73 F), but the summer crowds start to diminish. This creates a more relaxed atmosphere with less demand on the relatively confined area of Mostar’s Old Town but with the availability of all of the same attractions and experiences. Visiting in the off season is a great contribution to enabling a more sustainable tourism economy for local communities.

Outside of the Old Town, there is an entire city to explore…and the region of Herzegovina is at your feet. With so many towns, fortresses, and hillsides to discover, Mostar is perfect getaway before the arrival of winter (a season which offers its own charms!).

Our Story

Sheva Walking Tours is a team of dedicated Mostarians who want to share our home and experience with you! Our tip-based Free Walking Tour of Mostar is our most popular tour and we also offer Private Tours focused on specific aspects of Mostar’s history, culture and landscape. In addition to exploring the history and culture of Mostar, our tours include our favorite anecdotes and stories about Mostar and provide you with an insider’s perspective on food and entertainment that should not be missed while you are in town!

Sheva’s Free Walking Tour of Mostar was inspired by the stories and history Ševko (head guide and owner) shared with his partner who relocated to Mostar permanently from the U.S. The tour developed in response to what we felt was a gap in the walking tours offered to visitors in Mostar, many of which do not directly address the recent events of the last three decades or discuss today’s socio-political context in a critical and informed manner.

Sheva’s Free Walking Tour operates year-round and provides an affordable opportunity for both groups and individuals of all ages and backgrounds to come together to encounter Mostar from a local perspective. We believe it is essential to provide a tour that does not erase Mostar’s difficult past and instead, contextualizes it so that you can better understand not only what occurred in Mostar, but what locals have experienced. The best way to understand Mostar’s present, is to understand the region’s history.

We strive to create a unique experience during each tour that responds to guests individual interest and questions about Mostar and the wider region. We won’t shy away from difficult questions or topics and because we are independently operated, our tours are not scripted. We do not have any personal political motivation – our only agenda is to leave you with a well-rounded understanding of Mostar’s past, present and future through a compelling 2 hour tour. Because of Mostar’s recent tumultuous history, we believe it is our responsibility to provide our guests a well-balanced and objective perspective while also retaining our personal approach.
