While there are many things to fall in love with on your visit to Mostar and throughout Herzegovina, one exclaimation we hear repeatedly from our guests is “the local food wonderful!”

And it is.

Our cuisine embodies the farm to table ethic that has become emblematic of quality dining in recent years. Much of what you are served in the home or resturants is sourced locally, fresh, and slow made. The seasonal fruits and vegetables often come from small scale producers…the road-side stalls will compell you to stop and taste what comes from the land you are exploring. The cheeses, spreads, and cured meats that grace our meza platters are imbued with the flavors of the locations and traditions which have shaped them…and pair perfectly with Herzegovinian wine, the production of which stretches to the pre-Roman times. Even a stop for pita from under the sač is far more than a quick (but no less delightful) meal on the go, but representative of an incredible skill creating the fine, stretched dough that enventually encapsulates decadent filling amongst layers of flaky pastry. And the fish? Sourced from the pristine waterways flowing through our land and of which is there is an immense local pride.

As travelers on a budget, we all love tips and trick to save a few bucks while exploring the world. Here is a tip from us that will not only get you more with your travel budget, but will contribute to and support sustainable, community-based tourism business (like Sheva Walking Tours) and likely result in a better travel experience for you.

Book directly with your local tour provider. It is that easy.

Rather than booking through large online platforms that pop up in your search, we urge you to identify the local businesses providing your tours and travel experiences. While large platforms are a great place to do research, go the step further and contact the local business directly. Make a booking or reservation through them. Any registered, professional business will have an online presence. Find them.

Why? Online platforms do not work in the communities you are visiting. They are not the ones who make your vacation memorable. They do, however, take a significant amount of the money you are paying for a tour or experience! Online platforms can take up to 45% of the cost that travelers pay! If you are charged 100 Euro for a tour, your tour provider will only receive a fraction. If you are booking a “Free Tour” through a platform, be aware that your on-the-ground provider (like us!) is being charged per person. Yes, your booking cost us money!

If you book directly with a provider, you will receive a better price as well as the assurance that you are supporting a local business in the best way you can. Shop local. Book local. The best travel hack you can adopt on your next adventure.

A few days ago, one of our incredible guests expressed concern about sustainability in the tourism industry. He spoke about some of the locations he had recently visited and asked how best to practice sustainability as a traveler. What were our suggestions?

The first means by which to practice sustainability is a tenet that many people practice at home: supporting local businesses and community-based production. This principle should be applied wherever you might find yourself. Shop local!

When traveling, find registered businesses which employ community members and highlight locally produced goods linked to traditional practices. For tours, this means finding a local tour guide that operates and lives in the destination you are visiting. Whether you are on a quick stop during a day trip or spending a few nights, take the time to find a certified local guide and book directly (and not through a third party website) with the guide or company. Find the official company website online. Guides from outside your destination city and country are often not registered to guide you in other locations and are taking away opportunities from local community members who know their town the best!

In places like Mostar, include an overnight stay in your itinerary. Mostar is a fantastic hub from which to explore Herzegovina. The best times to explore are early mornings and evenings when the day time crowds depart. Slow down, relax, and absorb the local context. Travelers need to find accommodation somewhere…let that somewhere be Mostar. Rather than spend money on a quick day trip with long hours in a car, use it to experience and immerse yourself in a new location like Mostar!

When we first launched Sheva Walking Tours in 2018, one of our goals was to develop quality tours that were not only educational and engaging, but also accessible. It was because of this goal that we chose to provide both “Free” Tours as well as traditional private tour options to accommodate both solo and independent travelers as well as larger organized groups of travelers.

Often times, solo or independent travelers have a difficult time finding a walking tour that works for them. Private tours for one or two people may be cost prohibitive depending upon a traveler’s budget. This is where the idea of a tip-based group tour comes to the rescue. Our job, as Free Tour providers, is to bring together a larger group comprised of solo or independent travelers and provide a memorable tour. Together, the individual contributions of each guest supports the service and enables us (Sheva Walking Tours) to operate. The daylight hours have lengthened when we were not paying attention, creating a perfect space for an evening tour exploring both in and outside of Old Town.

Are you planning a visit to Mostar this summer? Take our advice. Spend at least one night. So many of our guests say the same thing - we wish we had stayed longer. They do not realize prior to arrival just how much there is to experience, explore, enjoy, and learn in and around Mostar. If they could do one thing differently…it would be to slow down and spend 2 or 3 days in Mostar.

The best part of spending the night in Mostar? The beauty of both the evening and early morning light in town without the daytime crowds.

So, when planning your visit, learn from those who came before you. Slow down, spend a night or two, and take your ćejf. Don’t know what ćejf is? By the time you leave Mostar, you will.

Our Story

Sheva Walking Tours is a team of dedicated Mostarians who want to share our home and experience with you! Our tip-based Free Walking Tour of Mostar is our most popular tour and we also offer Private Tours focused on specific aspects of Mostar’s history, culture and landscape. In addition to exploring the history and culture of Mostar, our tours include our favorite anecdotes and stories about Mostar and provide you with an insider’s perspective on food and entertainment that should not be missed while you are in town!

Sheva’s Free Walking Tour of Mostar was inspired by the stories and history Ševko (head guide and owner) shared with his partner who relocated to Mostar permanently from the U.S. The tour developed in response to what we felt was a gap in the walking tours offered to visitors in Mostar, many of which do not directly address the recent events of the last three decades or discuss today’s socio-political context in a critical and informed manner.

Sheva’s Free Walking Tour operates year-round and provides an affordable opportunity for both groups and individuals of all ages and backgrounds to come together to encounter Mostar from a local perspective. We believe it is essential to provide a tour that does not erase Mostar’s difficult past and instead, contextualizes it so that you can better understand not only what occurred in Mostar, but what locals have experienced. The best way to understand Mostar’s present, is to understand the region’s history.

We strive to create a unique experience during each tour that responds to guests individual interest and questions about Mostar and the wider region.
