🐻 "Bear tower" in Jajce

▶The name “Bear tower” comes from the firmness and massiveness of the tower itself, and that resembles the Bosnian black bear.

▶ Even one legend says that bear was locked in the tower into captives were thrown in.😮😮

▶ This type of the tower belongs to the defensive type with its thick walls and round and massive look.

▶ It was built in mid-15th century during the last decade of Bosnian independence (1448-1463), during which the last Bosnian kings carried out intensive construction activities.

🕍 Jajce underground chapel with the crypt, often refereed to as Jajce Catacombs is historic burial site of Hrvoje Vukčić Hrvatinić, a medieval Grand Duke of Bosnia who founded the city and ordered construction of the underground chapel with the crypt around 1400, which was finished before 1416, in time for his burial.

▶The catacombs suggest a lot, but they seem to be a very important Christian temple. Hrvoje Vukčić Hrvatinić himself wanted to transform them into a family tomb.

▶During the Ottoman Empire, legends say that at that time a dervish was imprisoned in the catacombs for 40 days, considering the place sacred, so people declared him an awliya (protector) after leaving them. So they served for spiritual purification.

▶In the Austro-Hungarian period, due to the favorable temperature, traders used them for storing goods.

▶During the Second World War, before the AVNOJ session, the entire Supreme Headquarters stayed on the plateau of the catacombs, and due to the unstable situation and frequent bombing, they hid in the catacombs themselves.

Ethno village Stanišići is located on the way out of Bijeljina. Ethno village is out of the present time and space, it takes us back to our ancestors and nature and awakens an admiration in us towards simplicity of a former lifestyle.

By listening to the burbling of the streams and churning of the water mill this is where a human relaxes eyes and soul and becomes wiser and more noble.

Ethno village Stanišići was founded in 2003 thanks to Boris Stanišić's inspiration. More than a few years ago he was traveling through villages of Middle Bosnia looking for old houses and objects which would preserve the knowledge about a period and culture from the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. The result is the authentic mountain village in the heart of Semberija plain.

🔎Atomic war command, also known as the Ark and nicknamed Tito's bunker, is a former nuclear bunker and military command center located near the town of Konjic.

Built to protect Yugoslav President Josip Broz Tito and up to 350 members of his inner circle in the event of an atomic conflict, the structure is made up of residential areas, conference rooms, offices, strategic planning rooms, and other areas. The bunker remained a state secret until after the breakup of Yugoslavia in the 1990s.

Built between 1953 and 1979 inside a hill at the foot of the Zlatar Mountain, the ARK is the largest nuclear shelter, and one of the largest underground facilities, ever built in the former Yugoslavia. For over a decade after its completion, it was the most secret military installation in the country.

All construction workers were carefully selected and vetted, signing a contract of silence, and all staff members held the highest security clearance. In 1979, when work was completed after 26 years and $4.6 billion (today's $20 billion) in construction costs.

How cold is Neretva?

The Upper Neretva has water of Class I purity and is almost certainly the coldest river water in the world, often as low as 7–8 degrees Celsius in August.

The village of Lukomir is situated at southern ridge of Bjelašnica mountain and, at 1,495 m, it’s the highest inhabited settlement in BiH and the only one above 1,300 m. Lukomir can be seen as ethnological museum, in which the customs of Dinaric highlanders are still practiced.

It’s an important part of Bosnia's historical, cultural and architectural legacy and provides a unique atmosphere of going back deep in to the past. Also, the “Stećci“scattered about the village indicate that the village was already inhabited around 14th and 15th century.

The Dobrun Monastery is located in 12 km away from town of Višegrad, in the gorge of the Rzav river near the border with Republic of Serbia. Dobrun Monastery is dedicated to the Dormition of the Virgin and was built in 1343 by Duke Pribil and his sons Stefan and Petar.

On the ninth kilometer of the old Foča-Miljevina-Sarajevo road, in the place called Pirni Do, there are Sand Pyramids, and are a real masterpiece of the nature.

This unique geomorphologic phenomenon has been created for many years. By erosion of the soil and under the influence of aggressive friction of frosts, summer heat, rain and strong winds, figures of interesting shapes were created.

Their shape and composition are reminiscent of the Pyramids in Colorado (USA), Dolomites (Italy), the Valcea region in Romania, or the pyramids in Devil's Town (Đavolja Varoš, Serbia).

Sand pyramids are first mentioned in the Austro-Hungarian period. The process of erosion lasts even today, so they do not disappear, but grow. They reach a height of up to 20 meters

The Strange World of Stećci: Bosnia's Medieval Tombstones

The tombstones stećci are medieval stone tombstones dating from the period between XII and XVI century on the territory of the old Bosnian state. They represent unique and exceptional monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Their shapes, ornaments, dimensions, inscriptions, number and, most importantly, the fact that they are completely rooted in medieval society, singles them out from anything similar in the contemporary European and world contexts. Recognized by the world public for these reasons, the phenomenon of stećak tombstones has been included on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
