Built during the Austro-Hungarian rule, its design is a mix of styles inspired by the cultures that shaped Sarajevo. It was built in a Neo-Moorish style, reminiscent of the architecture in Spain from the time of Al-Andalus, when Islamic and Spanish influences blended together.
When the Austro-Hungarians arrived in Sarajevo, they saw a unique city shaped by Islamic, Jewish, Orthodox, and Catholic traditions. The city’s rich diversity was reflected in everything, from the culture to the buildings. They wanted to honor this blend, so they commissioned architects to design the City Hall in a style that reflects the harmony of East and West.

Yet just eight years later, Sarajevo faced one of its darkest times, enduring the longest siege in modern history. For 1,425 days, the city was held under terror, and many of its Olympic venues were destroyed, including the famous bobsled track.
